Brilliant Heart Flyering

Wed 15 Jan
Report written by Laurie Glendinning

12 runners ran just under 7km to deliver leaflets on behalf of the British Heart Foundation

We welcomed everyone to the second goodgym group run of 2020, including Isabelle on her first goodgym group run, and Clive on his second group run.

After I confused Catherine with Rachel, assuming she and Joel were a couple, we warmed up and Rich led us out.

We made a brief stop at Rich's to collect the leaflets, and met David there, back from injury on his first goodgym run since November.

The group then continued down to Moulsham Drive, where we split in half to deliver the leaflets. After completing that in record time, we continued to deliver leaflets along Vicarage Road and Braemar Avenue.

I briefly panicked about everyone's location, with Russell and Julie bravely completing the first half of Vicarage Road, David and Rich going to Dovedale, and Catherine, Isabelle, Sallyann and Jenny, working further along Vicarage Road. However, we all grouped together, I did a headcount, and we made our way back to ARU through the park.

Great effort everyone - we delivered plenty of leaflets, and hopefully encouraged some Chelmsford residents to donate their unused furniture to raise funds for a worthwhile cause. And of course, a final shout out to Akin, who put on the hi-vis this week and did an excellent job backmarking throughout the run and task.

Don't forget, we're going to the quiz at the Golden Fleece next week, from 8pm!

Leafleting for BHF

Wed 15 Jan 18:30 pm
Anglia Ruskin University , Mildmay Sports Centre, Bishop Hall Lane, Chelmsford, CM1 1SQ
Help to get more stock for the store

Welcome to GoodGym Chelmsford! We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects in our area.

The Task:

We will be leafleting for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) around residential streets in Chelmsford.

BHF have a large furniture store in Chelmsford that is really low in stock so it needs replenishing.

By leafleting we will help to get awareness out there and hopefully some more stock for the store.

The Run

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities.

We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

We Fartleked the task as well!

Wed 8 Jan
Report written by Gerry

On our first group run of 2020 - *17 *runners met at the Mildmay gym.

We welcomed Clive to his first group run and he was at our starter session on Saturday, so he wasn't put off by that!

A quick chat about the new Good Friday 10k in Chelmsford, sign up quick it will sell out!

Tonights task was at our regular partner Interact so we set off heading along Bunny walk with some Fartlek (Swedish for "Speed Play") sprints on the whistle. Fartleks help to challenge the body to adapt to various speeds, conditioning you to become faster over longer distances.

We arrived at Moulsham Mill suitably warmed up for the task which was to clear loose soil around the entrance and lay down a base of base gravel and then a final covering of pea shingle. This will help people arriving to visit by not treading mud etc into the entrance area.

An offer was made for some runners to pack away Xmas decorations in the house and Rachel, Jennifer and Katie zipped their hands up! Catherine and Andy took control of the wheelbarrows, Kirk, Julie and Simon shoveled into the wheelbarrows and the rest spread the base around in an arc and finally the pea shingle to finish off.

Susie supplied the usual hospitality of drinks and biscuits to re-energise the sugar level, thanks as always Susie.

As the task and the earlier run took longer than usual it was straight back to the Uni for our warm down.

On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me, 12 Goodgymmers running

Wed 11 Dec
Report written by Laurie Glendinning

12 Goodgymmers, along with one run leader, ran to Chelmsford Central Park for litter picking

For our second to last Goodgym group run of 2019, we were glad to have a nice big group to litter pick, and see Doug back from New Zealand!

Adam led out, with a brilliant warm up for the group, and James G backmarked. Thank you both.

As we got to the station, we were met by Catherine, and David with our litter pickers, gloves and bags. We started our task, with Russell managing to find the most litter along the rather tidy walkway to the park. Once this was completed, we decided to move on to the park to keep the good work going.

When everyone was thoroughly freezing, we jogged back to drop off the pickers and say farewell to David, before heading to Bell Meadow for some fitness. The group split into pairs of their choosing, and ran a loop around the paths, meeting in the middle. There may have been a small shortcut taken by one of the group, but everyone was free to do the run their own way, so no bad feelings!

We ran back to ARU and had a stretch, discussing the special parkrun events over the festive period. There's an additional run at Chelmsford Central on Christmas Day, and there are two runs on New Years Day (one at 9am elsewhere in Essex, and one at 10.30 at Chelmsford Central).

We are heading to Zorba the Greek on Friday 20th December for our Goodgym Christmas meal - we may be able to squeeze a couple more people in, so let me know if you want to come but haven't signed up. There will be lots of meze and ouzo, and some awards to celebrate our achievements throughout 2019.

And finally, please all take the time vote in the general election tomorrow!

See you soon,

Laurie

There were twelve runners attending tonights group run.

Here is this weeks news:

You can do just an hour if you want, missions are being set up so please sign up but also let Susie (susie.nankivell@interact.org.uk) know directly that you will be attending so she can book you in.

Next weeks group run - This is a singing run! We will be going to the Cathedral where Mencap have their annual Christmas Carol service (bring a donation) We will set off from the UNI about 7pm but if anyone would like an easy 5k beforehand then meet at 6:30pm and I will take you on a route. If not, meet at 7pm to walk over to the Cathedral.

Santa Fun Run Set up - This is a Mission event on Sunday morning 8th December with a meet in Central Park at 06:45am to help set up the event, if you want to help break down the event later in the morning, just let me know. (gerry@goodgym.org) You can also sign up to run its about 5k and costs £12 including a Santa Suit butyou need to do this by Monday 2nd December.

No Group runs over the Xmas/New Year period, last group run this year will be the 18th December.

Tonights group run was leafleting for Kids Inspire around the Old Moulsham area. We set off from the Uni doing some warm up exercises and taking our usual route to the high street, to really get the heart rate up we did a caterpillar run for about 300m until a photo opportunity presented itself with a giant bauble that everyone could get inside!

Kids Inspire awarded us their prestigious "Volunteers of the Month" award, thankyou!

After the leafleting was done we headed to Bell Meadow to do a few effort sessions. First up was to split into pairs of fast and slow runners, then heading off in different directions on a 400m loop you meet your partner and hi-fived then headed back the way you came. We did this twice and to finish a handicap race of about 300m with the slowest heading off first with the fastest last chasing down to the finish.

A lot of heavy breathing ensued meaning everyone put in an effort, well done.

Back to the Uni for a stretch down.

Everyday I'm shovellin'

Wed 13 Nov
Report written by Laurie Glendinning

14 runners ran 5km to Interact for an autumnal clean up

We had a great turnout of 14 runners this chilly November evening as we set off to Interact.

Our first task was to clear up the ashes from the bonfire we built for the celebrations on the 1st November. We were a little apprehensive about how the bonfire had turned out, however it had left a very clear outline, so it must have gone well!

After quickly completing that job, we then moved on to clear up the leaves in the garden, which seemed to multiply the more we raked, however we still managed to get plenty in the compost bins! We were quite cold by this point, so after a quick biscuit or two, everyone was happy to get going and warm up again.

Thanks for coming to help clear up the outside of Interact, it saves them time so that they can keep on doing their good work.

Good luck to everyone running Chelmsford 10k at the weekend, I have no doubt we'll all do great!

Laurie

A Jogging Plogging record

Wed 6 Nov
Report written by Gerry

A record attendance of 24 runners at Chelmsford tonight!

Welcome to Sallyann and Pat to their first Goodgym group run, we hope to see you again in future weeks.

This weeks news was about 10km races with Chelmsford forthcoming on the 17th November, looks like at least six runners are signed, unfortunately it is now sold out so if you fancied doing it, too late! The other was Billericay 10km ;last Sunday, well done to Joel, Rachel, James G and myself who all ran at the event.

Catherine also gave a reminder that tonight was last orders for the Xmas social as final numbers were required, it looks like 16 of us will be going to Zorba's!

Tonights task was to litter pick (Plogging: a recreational activity, originating in Sweden, that combines jogging with picking up litter) in a section of the park set away from the main routes. It was a 2k run to the park led by Rich with Russell and Catherine tail running. We collected the pickers and bin bags and set to picking up the litter along Meteor Way (did you know there is a minature railway there?) with 24 people it didn't take long so we headed back to Central Park to do an efforts session.

Tonights efforts was a 500m loop at a 10k pace and then a 300m loop at a 5k pace, this was repeated twice, a third one was planned but time ran out. Hopefully it will help the Chelmsford 10k runners, but will help anyone with the parkrun times.

Time to head back to Anglia Uni with a 2km jog back led by Joel, a good stretch down and then everyone headed off home. Thanks for coming along everyone and making it a record turnout.

Laurie will look forward to seeing you all next week for our trip to Interact.

Happy running
