God Save the Queen's Trees!

Greenwich Report written by Sarah Place

17 awesome runners ran 3km to help out at Royal Hill Community Garden!

We had a whole bunch of new runners with us yesterday which is always amazing to see! So big welcome to Clare, Bex, Leah and Bronywyn!! Hope you enjoyed your first run in Greenwich ladies!!

After a little warm up, we set off through Greenwich via the Cutty Sark and arrived at the lovely community garden on Royal Hill. They are currently going through a bit of a battle with the council who want to get rid of the garden and build flats there instead but until this happens, Tony and the other volunteers are trying to show how important the space is for the Greenwich community and with our help, we can try and make it as lovely as possible so the council change their mind about building on it!

There was loads to do last night! The main one being to clear the wild flower bed to make room for some newly donated trees by Queenie herself. AMAZING! Instantly making our borough that little bit more royal! Other jobs included clearing leaves, moving a big metal unit, planting bulbs and cutting the grass!

So much to be getting on with, everyone grabbed a tool and got stuck in! Most people started hacking away at the wild flower bed, churning up the soil and pulling out the weeds. After that was done, it was time to remove all the outer bricks and dig a trench for some nice new bricks to surround the royal tree pots.

Meanwhile, leaves were being cleared and put on the compost heap and lots of new bulbs were being planted in pots!

After half an hour, the place had been transformed! We'd made Tony's dream a reality! His words not mine! We gave the trees a ceremonial watering, packed everything away and got back on the road.

We set off a different way and arrived back at the uni for a little meet and retreat! We paired up, ran opposite directions around the uni and then when we met our partner we turned around and went back the way we came! So the idea was to arrive back to the start at the same time as your partner... and in most cases, that is exactly what happened! Nicely done!

After two goes we called it a night. I was suitably puffed, I don't know about anyone else! That circle was further than I thought! We walked up the steps for a little stretch and we were done!

Remember next week it's the Halloween Special plus our social afterwards so get your fake blood at the ready!

New people in particular, here is the link to our Facebook group where people share info on races and missions they are doing so please join!

And finally one more thing, here is the link for the setting up and then taking down of the Westcombe Society Christmas Bazaar community missions. We need about 6 people for each so get involved gang!

Fabulous running last night everyone, and great work at the task! As I'm sure you could tell, Tony was so pleased with everything you did, especially with the Royal Trees so well done!! See you next week!
