We will be meeting our good mate Rob the Parky to help him prep the park for the upcoming Handlebards performances that have not been able to be held in the park for over 2 years!
We will be helping to prep for the play with general tidying, gardening, woodchipping etc.
Please do bring your own gardening gloves.
ABOUT THE PLAY:
On the 17th Aug Heeley People's Park will be hosting 'The Scottish Play'.
The performance is a Pay What You Can performance, un-ticketed with admission on a first-come first-served basis. Donations will be accepted on the evening of the show.
Join The HandleBards all-female troupe at Heeley People’s Park for a bicycle-powered, farcical production of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. Forget the tears and tragedy – this is a frantic, delirious, full-of-beans show like you’ve never seen before. This is an outdoor production, so please bring your own chair or blanket to sit on, a picnic to dig into, and dress for the weather! Notes on Performance Doors open at 6pm, so bring a picnic and come and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Chairs, picnics, blankets and any other low level accessories are welcome. In case of rain, please don’t bring umbrellas as they block sight-lines for other audience members. Ponchos and raincoats are just as fetching, so please wear these instead.
This week we headed uphill into the rain to meet Iren of the Gleadless Valley Litter Pickers.
Irene met us with pickers, gloves and bags in hand and even a dustpan and brush and walked us to a particularly littered alleyway.
We got straight to work filling bags, sweeping up shards and grabbing fly tipped items.
We came across paint, cans, cigarette buts, the usual suspects. There was plenty to go out.
After collecting the bags together we left them ready for collection and said our goodbyes to Irene.
We'll be meeting the lovely Iren of Gleadless Valley Litter Pickers to pick the area around Gleadless Road near the medical centre.
If you have gloves, bags and pickers. Please bring them with you.
Huge congrats to @Tim on his 100th run! Check the photos for Tims honorary GG bear photo, courtesy of @Rachael.
Tonight we headed up to help @Craig with the upkeep of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
We got a great brief from @Craig who told us the tasks for the eve:
- Litter picking
- Chopping back overgrowth
- Sweeping back glass
After all the work was done we did some Olympic themed clean and jerks with gardening equipment for our fitness session before heading home.
This week we will be meeting all round super star Craig who does so much for Cycling up at Beaumont Road North to make it Beau once more!
We will be meeting where Beaumont Rd North & Corker Bottoms Lane meet 53.378027, -1.425588
Expect some edging, cutting back, litter picking and general sprucing to bring this part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network (NCN) back to the way it should be.
Please bring your own gardening gloves for the task.
"Tomorrow night is the first of four Sheffield Half recces organised by Steve. I'll be leading tomorrow's one, which is the first 5km of the route up to Knowle Lane and back down into town, so approx 10km altogether. A good run if you're doing the half and want to practice the Ecclesall Rd hill, or if you just fancy a nice social run. We'll be going at a comfortable pace to suit whoever turns up 😌 Meeting outside the Millennium Gallery on Arundel Gate at 18:30 👌"
Alex is a now a pretty committed GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the fifth time
On a stormy Sheffield eve we welcomed a new runner in from the cold. A huge, warm welcome to

Last night we headed off in the blustery wind in the direction of Heeley to help BRILLIANT BEV & RELIABLE ROB of Heeley Development Trust with the upkeep of Heeley People's Park.
We even had snow on the way, but we kept storm Ciara at bay and didn't let the weather get in our way.
On arrival we were welcomed by Rob and Bev who gave us a brief of the evenings tasks which involved moving their very own woodchip (created using the parks own trees) to areas of the park that were in need of some fresh hot chip...
Bev was very excited to show us their new set of GoodGym red buckets that we would be christening (get the pun title now?).
Having done a few woodchipping tasks in the past we were all chips off the old block and mulch fun was had moving the woodchip to the areas in need.
Once the path was covered and raked to perfection, a boulder approach was taken to woodchip spreading as we moved onto the climbing boulder area to ensure soft landings would be in store for any climbers.
Everyone got really stuck in with an efficient assembly line of fillers, luggers and rakers making most efficient use of our time at the park, lovely to see.
You can't make a woodchip omlette without raking some beds - Kat Simmons
Once it got to our time to leave we received a lovely heart felt thanks from Bev and Rob and we headed off to the U Mix center to use the 50m sprint track to get some sprint sets in before heading back to base to stretch and hear what other fantastic gg activities were upcoming.
Until next time, happy running :)
Heeley Peoples Park is the largest community owned park in the country!
It has roughly 3.5 hectares of meadowland, birch, fruit trees, play space, bouldering wall and bike tracks!
It is a lot of space to maintain which means having volunteers is crucial to the upkeep of the beautiful park.
HPP need our help!!!
We will be weeding, lifting, digging, raking, pruning, mulching and helping spread the word.
Tools and any other equipment needed for the task will be provided, however if you have some gardening gloves it would be great if you could bring them along.
Whether it’s running wheel barrows around the park, weeding flower beds or pruning bushes on the path you will always be busy.
If the task is likely to be a dark one, please bring a head torch and if you are a GG Torch Bearer please could you bring yours with you fully charged. Thanks!
Alex has helped keep other people motivated, Alex has noticed what others have done and cheered 10 people. We doff our caps to you Alex.
