Crazy Cats at Felix Road

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

Due to GoodGymers being spread across multiple runs around Bristol this evening, we had a reasonably-sized 20 people who stuck with the usual group run and came to get fit by doing good at Felix Road Adventure Playground.

After a warm-up of the classic game, Shona Says, the group soon left to amble along the cycle path towards Easton and Felix Road Adventure Playground. The summer holidays have been a busy time for the playground, culminating in a massive event last week celebrating their 75th anniversary where they had 450 children on site and 450 adults! All of this great fun meant there was a lot of work to be done for our runners to get stuck into.

On arrival, Zoe and Mandy split the group into the gardening team and the litter picking team, with the encouragement that if the teams finished their jobs they would be able to move on to the all-important and tempting Painting Of The Play Structure.

Soon, GoodGymers armed with bin bags were zooming around the playground until they quickly filled 5 bags of rubbish and were ready to paint. They grabbed a primary colour of their choice (which, to many of the group's surprise, Tim was able to pick and tell apart) then got to work painting sections of the structure. It is a big job, and one which the group will be returning to complete in the not-too-distant future.

Meanwhile, the gardeners hacked their way through a whole pile of prickly brambles and transported them to the compost heap. They put in a tremondous effort and managed to leave a clear area next to the young children's climbing frame.

We ran, lunged and press-up'd our way back into town and we were soon back at base, stretching off and rushing off for our well-deserved Pieminister for our monthly GoodGym Eats!

Painting Toil at Cubeicle

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

Painting and a shortish run. The GG equivalent of a perfect storm. No surprise then to see 23 eager faces lined up for our pre-run warm-up.

Originally listed as a double bill, a last minute cancellation of our scheduled visit to Ashley Street park meant that team Cube was to be expanded from the planned six to our entire group. Massive thanks then to our host Pete for rustling up plenty more rollers and paint brushes in the last couple of days.

The Cube is a small independent cinema and music venue run entirely by volunteers. Over the summer the venue closes down for essential maintenance but with many of the volunteers on holiday our help was very much appreciated to help with some of the painting.

We were to paint the outside walls with a special fire retardant paint and the gents toilet floor with a non slip version.

Toilet Team

Special thanks go to the volunteers for the toilet team particularly on such a hot day and especially in the presence of an 'unidentified liquid' (presumably water as the toilets had been thoroughly bleached and disinfected before our arrival).

Wall Team

Everyone else got to work on the outside walls. Amazingly we got 17 people in action in a fairly small space and as a result we managed to finish the whole space in just over 25 minutes. I have to say it looked pretty smart by the end (as evidenced by the much happier 'after' group shot)

With the task finished in such a short time there was plenty of time for some tricep dips in the Bearpit and a quick round of Grandmothers triple extension footsteps and Squatopia on the way back.

Well done everyone - and thanks to Sarah for helping to set this one up!

I’m super photogenic in these! Not sure if I’m prouder of the builders bum or my ass eating my shorts 😂

Hey Matt, if the photos aren't exactly capturing your best side then I would definitely blame the photographer rather than the subjects 😬What isn't in doubt is all your painting efforts were a true work of art today!

Weed have thought of a better pun if we weren't Bugged

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

It was another big group attendance tonight as our Bristol runners spread out across Bedminster to fix up some green spaces. Welcome to the new faces that joined us tonight - it was great to see you Anna, Beth, Cristina, Aga and Abigail! Also good to see some new but returning faces - good luck for the big one this weekend Stu!

Thanks to Charlie, who led the first group to Cherry Tree Garden. There, they were met by Julia who explained to them the momentous task of weeding and clearing nettles ahead of the bulb-planting they are planning in the future. After a slight delay followed by being rescued by the henceforth-named Glove Superman, Darren, the group were ready to enthusiastically set to work. Apparently, Chris decided to get in a fight with a Sycamore (as you do on a Tuesday night with GoodGym), while the rest of the group picked on something their size... Or at least, a whole lot of nettles slightly closer to their own size.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group met Laura from Bedminster Patchwork. They manage 12 patches of land across Bedminster, which they work on to make beautiful spaces for the local community. GoodGym had previously worked on this particular patch a couple of times and it is coming on leaps and bounds. The group set to work weeding and planting across the ground. Despite hitting a spider nest and finding surely the entire population of Bristol's hairy caterpillars, the group did a stellar job of making the patch weedless and freshly planted ready for summer. What a great job all round. Thank you to your brilliant back-marking Maria, which got us past all the envy-inducing pint-holding locals sipping in the evening sun, until we could get back for our own well-deserved pints.

Overall, a Tuesday night well spent, and Bedminster looking all the better for our green-fingered GoodGymers!
