First cleanup session of the new year and the 2 other volunteers couldn't make it to the Community Fridge today. Thankfully one of the distribution team was on hand to help with the rubbish and crates whilst the clearing of boxes and other cleaning jobs were completed. Once the laundry was dropped in the drier it was time to brave the cold temperatures outside again.

Merton’s Community Fridge is a long-term initiative to tackle food poverty and reduce food waste in the borough. It's essentially a big fridge where fresh surplus food is donated and redistributed to the community.

Core volunteers help with the food distribution 3 times a week and others stop by for the set up or cleanup so there are plenty of jobs to do.

Helping local people in crisis

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.
