Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
On Monday evening, a top crew of Goodgymmers ran and cycled to Highbury Quadrant Estate Gardens to meet Fran and Ernestas to lend a hand for Action for Local Food and Octopus Community Network.
Goodgym Islington have been regular volunteers at Highbury Quadrant Estate Gardens over the past few years, and it has been really amazing to see the transformation of this forgotten patch of land into a community plot, a small orchard and a permaculture meadow full of wildflowers.
Last week, a local resident group started a weekly open evening at Birchmore Hall, covering topics like community food projects, growing and nature. This project proved to be a success, so the team asked our Goodgym group to help with spreading the word across the immediate neighbourhood.
Ernestas took the lead for this task, providing our crew with pre-prepared maps for the estate. We split into groups- Steve and Marie Laure as team 1, and Katie and Rachel as team 2, and distributed flyers across almost all of the Highbury Quadrant, Birchmore and Green Lanes estates.
The resident team were hugely thankful for our assistance in this time consuming task- a perfect example of many hands making light work. We hope that this really awesome creative project proves to be hugely popular!
We run lots of projects including 'We Can Grow' which encourages food growing on housing estates around Islington as well as engaging with residents to increase environmental literacy and access to outdoor spaces.
