The Vanbrugh Volunteers
We will be: cutting back scrub and trees where they are shading out grassland and to open up sheltered spots for wildlife; digging out brambles and ivy where they are encroaching onto rarer plants; cutting back gorse to encourage fresh regrowth and so there is always a range of stages of growth for insects; carrying the cuttings to the edge of the site for the Council to remove.

The Vanbrugh Volunteers are teaming up with Council and Friends of Westcombe Woodlands for this work party to conserve the Vanbrugh Pits. We were down here last year to help with cutting down trees and brambles and we are returning to help maintain the important mosaic of wildlife habitats!

Tasks will include digging out brambles and ivy where they are encroaching onto rarer plants; cutting back gorse to encourage its regeneration; removing invasive trees/scrub where it threatens rarer habitats; litter picking; moving the cuttings to a nearby collection point for the Council to take away.

If you can't stay for the full 3 hours feel free to drop in - any help is appreciated! It would be most useful to come about 12pm if you're dropping in so that you can help with moving the cuttings.

Gardening gloves/tools are provided but if you have your own that would be helpful. Please bring suitable warm clothing you don't mind using for this kind of work, sturdy footwear and any equipment you would like to bring. It should be a fun event with lovely people.

Your contact for the day will be Joe Beale (07981029379)
