16 GG Yorkies ran 7km to help York Greenways!

Tonight we welcomed a brand new runner to the crew, everyone give Emily a massive cheer! We'll hear more from her later as she had a particularly hilarious role in the task.

It was a straight line south to the London Road bridge, where we met Peter from York Greenways. The area is renowned for litter and the local college had funded three bins to be placed under the bridge. Our task was to:

  • Spray-paint the galvanised steel bins
  • Cut chains to secure the bin lids to the bins
  • Move the bins into position
  • Line the base of the bins with concrete to prevent theft
  • Glue signs to the side of the bridge to say what each bin is for
  • Spray over some of the grafitti on the bridge

Who is good with a can of paint? - Peter, York Greenways

None of our good'uns had much experience with spray paint, not that they would admit to anyway. However, three willing pairs took on the red, green and blue spraying. They were asked to paint a thin layer, but the red and blue teams were trying to do a high-quality finish and ended up running out of paint to finish the lids. They all looked marvellous nonetheless.

Meanwhile, Paul was busy sawing chains and a small crew was in charge of gluing the laminated signs to the wall. There was a gasp from Emily, as she realised the last sign would either have to be wonky, or leave some mildly offensive grafitti on show.

They won't be able to line up or else all the dog walkers will have to look at the penis! - Emily, new runner

While a few of the crew finished moving the bins into position and filling the bases with concrete, the rest of us treated ourselves to some lunges, practised single-leg squats whilst partnered up and played a few balance games such as 'spaghetti arm leg balance'.

Once the bins were all in situ, we completed some running drills ready for a timed mile effort on our way back to base. Aron switched from back-marking to being our lead timer but had a GPS watch disaster as his watch battery died before some of the runners has finished. Time or no time, everyone did a brilliant job and worked hard and that's what matters (especially Louisa and Maddy who were amazing at cheering everybody!).

Remember next week we have a double task, exciting! One route is 8.5km and the other is 1.5km. This will be a great opportunity to bring along a friend and introduce them to GoodGym. Sign up is here.
