Enjoy 1 hour counting birds and help monitor our wildlife

Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.

Take part in the world’s largest wildlife survey on 25-27 January and do something great for nature. Just choose one hour any time over the three days and enjoy time with nature counting birds.

It’s so easy to make a difference for nature. This may not be a physical task, but nature is proven to be good for our mental wellbeing and health.

1 Watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour. You could run as a group to your local park, or jog over to a friends house and watch over the garden.

2 Only count the birds that land in your garden, or local park, not those flying over.

3 Count the most birds that land at any one time – not the total number you count over the hour. (Otherwise you could be counting the same bird more than once!)

4 Tell us what you saw. Submit your results even if you saw nothing. It is still very useful information!

5 Submit your results online by 11 February 2020 at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch using the code BH30.It is quick, easy and the savings made on postage costs help us spend more on conservation.

If you have signed up, I will assume you have completed the task. Please un-sign from the task page by 5pm on the 27 Jan if you have not be able to complete the task so I can correctly award the good deed.

Photos request: Please send me photos of you counting birds in your park or garden or running to the park, and any nice bird photos you managed to capture so I can include them in the report. ( tom.h@goodgym.org )

Thanks, Tom

Dear all,

It is with regret I have to cancel this Community Mission. Under new guidance issues today from the Central Team this task does not meet the correct criteria ( see below).

There are ways to do this task following the new guidance and if you still wish to do this as a Community Mission then please see last paragraph for suggestion on how to set it up.

Regardless of whether or not it matches the GoodGym criteria, it is still a worthwhile thing to do - so I would urge you to Google the “Big Garden Birdwatch 2020” and still take part.

Because this Community Mission has attracted attention from people across the country, I cannot change the settings and put a location that would work for all signed up.

I will however look at this issues and address it locally. Please contact your local Taskforce to set this up in your area.

I would also advise areas to look at other Community Missions to ensure they fit the new criteria.

Thanks and happy good deeding,
Tom H

The new guidelines:

- Community missions must have a single meeting point where anyone can meet to join the task.
- It must be possible for anyone else to join the session at the time it has been listed to start on the website. If the task requires pre-registration with an external organisation then this must be possible at the time you create the listing.
- Community missions must not require face-to-face training unless completed on the day when people arrive at the task.

These were drawn up in line with GoodGym working ethos and what was felt to be right in keeping all our of sessions social and open for anyone to attend.

It does mean that the RSPB session would need to have a fixed meeting location to go ahead. As mentioned in my previous email it would be great if this session was moved to a park so that people were able to count the birds together. Would you be interested in finding a location for this task and fixing a set time/date to do it? The alternative would be asking if someone else would be up for doing this or removing it from the website.
