Who this task will support
Eglinton Hill Bird Sanctuary
This project aims to improve biodiversity by creating and maintaining a safe, thriving bird sanctuary for wildlife and nature. Currently the site is a sanctuary for a wide variety of birds and wildlife. A resident tawny owl has been observed in on the site. It will provide an accessible green space where residents and visitors can enjoy, observe, and take pride in their local environment in a borough with high redevelopment. The initiative will support physical and mental wellbeing, reduce social isolation, and encourage community engagement through shared conservation and maintenance activities. People of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds will work together with a common purpose, developing skills, learning about nature, and behaviour change to a litter-free environment. Environmental improvements will enhance air quality, support sustainable streets, and increase climate resilience and a reduction in pollution. The project will benefit the local community, future generations, and Greenwich Council by reducing long-term land maintenance costs through lasting environmental improvements and a strong volunteer-led stewardship model.

Come and join a volunteer day with the new Eglington Hill Bird Sanctuary! It's an all day session but just comment with what times you'd like to come and join - stay for an hour or two or the whole day if you wish.

They will be creating a pond with Froglife. https://www.froglife.org/

Tasks will include:

  • Help carry items down to the bird sanctuary
  • Pond excavation works in collaboration with Froglife representatives
  • Maintenance and repotting of pond plants
  • Removal of marked saplings and small tree growth within the bird sanctuary if time available
  • Stripping branches of cut wood and putting into piles in designated area
  • Digging up of roots and earth (we might see a certain robin coming to supervise)
  • Litter picking
  • Clearing of entrance way to make it more accessible
  • Greenwich Council will be partially filling the pond with a water delivery at 2:30pm

Bring some gloves and come and get involved!
