This week we ran just over 4k to the Haven Day Centre for Swindon Night Shelter who always really appreciate our support and how much we can smash in just 45 minutes with GoodGym spirit.

Talking of smashing, this time around we were cleaning windows, which hopefully weren’t being smashed in the process!

This was a last minute change of task. After a cancellation, Emma the Trainer put out a last minute call, phoning a friend for a task, and the Night Shelter answered!

Eleven of us gathered this Tuesday evening – including GoodGym tourist Alex from GoodGym Bristol. Thanks for coming to see us in Swindon Alex!

Before we left the Oasis, our icebreaker was the quagmire of our most hated household task. The dishes featured heavily: both Mike and Jase the Ace wishes they didn’t have to wash up, Sandy Sam particularly passes on washing pots, while Tracey and Jo despise the dishwasher!

The bathroom featured heavily too – both Emma the Trainer and Charles give a wide berth to it. Alex gives cleaning the mirrors a miss, while Lily loves all household chores from the sense of satisfaction she gets from them. Guess who’s being invited around to do everyone’s dishes?!

We soon set off and were running to the same location as a community mission a couple of Saturday’s ago. As always we chatted as we ran, and swapped stories of Easter and all the races we had done over the weekend.

At one road, a kind car driver gave us the thumbs up for all 11 of us to cross straight in front of her. At least, we think it was her thumb…!

We soon arrived at the Haven Day Centre, and could tell the differences we had made at our last trip there. We were met by Office Manager Carol who always really appreciates our support in the organisation’s mission of helping the homeless of Swindon. She gave us a quick brief on our transparent task, and we were soon shining away.

Let’s be clear. Cleaning windows… what a pane!

Alex, Richard the Vicar, Tracey, Jase the Ace, Mike, Jo and Sandy Sam wiped the windows round the back, while Charles disappeared to make the panes shine out the front. Emma the Trainer did the spot checks and took photos, while Andrew and Lily got acquainted with an old friend of GoodGym Swindon… the Dyson!

As we whistled "when I’m cleaning windows" we made sure to remove the streaks, debated whether the marks were inside or outside, and found taking the Sellotape off very appealing!

Meanwhile, the hoovering team worked their way through an outbuilding which included the tiniest hidden office imaginable. We would say this task was a complete success!

We soon cleaned up, said our goodbyes to Carol, and were off running back to the Oasis.

Back at the Oasis, we shared stories of a mega running Easter weekend, with GoodGymer’s taking part in the Westonbirt Easter 10k and Half Marathon, and of course the regular Swindon parkrun at Lydiard Park. Go GoodGym!

Up next!

  • We have loads of GoodGym goodness for you this week – we’re joining the Mayor’s Marathon on Wednesday night, joining the leg at Broome Manor Golf Complex. More information on the WhatsApp Chat Group.

  • Thursday night is We’re Open @ Coffee 1 to bring some GG cheer to Sanctuary Seekers from across the world. If you like chatting, drinking coffee, playing games and listening to music, do get involved with this task.

  • Next Tuesday, we are Weeding in the Rose Garden at Christ Church. After the task, Emma the Trainer and some of the TaskForce will be on BBC Radio Wiltshire – listen out between 8pm and 9pm!

Thanks Emma. It’s a pleasure - I was in a real grump after work yesterday. GoodGym cheered me up no end, and then finishing the run report this morning gave me a real spring in my step! I just hope everyone reading this feels similar. 😊
