Weeding in the Garden of Reflection at Christ Church on our 3rd Birthday!

Tue 3 Aug

We will be walking and running approximately 5km in total to Christ Church and back to help with a gardening task in the grounds of what is known locally as the Old Lady on the Hill, a stunning landmark in Central Swindon that can be seen from afar. We have been here quite a few times before; the last time back in September 2019 where we had a wonderful time weeding (and chatting!) in the Rose Garden.

We will be meeting at 6pm at Broome Manor Golf Complex*; just look out for us in the red and black GoodGym tops! After the task, we may be able to fit in a short exercise session before heading back to Broome Manor.

Please note: This Group Run is Walkable, meaning that there will be one group of Walkers leaving Broome Manor just after 6pm (led by a Task Force Member) and a second group of Runners leaving Broome Manor at around 6:10pm (led by a Run Leader). Please also be aware that GoodGym runs are suitable for runners of all abilities. All our runs are backmarked and we never leave anyone behind.

*Please look out for our Run Leader, Emma who will meet you all outside the Clubhouse at Broome Manor Golf Complex.

Please note that for the time being, our Group Runs will start in various outdoor locations meaning that lockers, toilets and refreshment facilities may not be available before and after the Group Run. We hope that this will change in the future and that at some point soon we can return to a regular meeting point with facilities. For the meantime let's just enjoy meeting up again - we have a lot to catch up on 😊

Clearing the Traverser at STEAM!

Tue 10 Aug 18:00 pm
Sainsbury's Bridgemead, Paddington Drive, Swindon, SN5 7AA
To improve the outdoor environment at STEAM, Museum of the Great Western Railway

We will be running approximately 4km in total; to Swindon's Steam Museum and back, to help with some clearing, weeding and litter picking in the traverser. Steam, Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a restored grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon Railway Works. The traverser, situated outside the museum, has become untidy and in need of our help to tidy up this historical part of Swindon. The last time we visited STEAM we didn't quite finish off the weeding so next week gives us the opportunity to pull together and get the job DONE!

We will be meeting at 6pm just outside Sainsbury's Bridgemead*; just look out for us in the red and black GoodGym tops! After the task, we may be able to fit in a short exercise session before heading back to Sainsbury's.

Please note: This Group Run is Walkable, meaning that there will be one group of Walkers leaving Sainsbury's just after 6pm (led by a Task Force Member) and a second group of Runners leaving Sainsbury's at around 6:10pm (led by a Run Leader). Please also be aware that GoodGym runs are suitable for runners of all abilities. All our runs are backmarked and we never leave anyone behind.

*Please look out for our Run Leader, Sam who will meet you all at Sainsbury's, to the far right hand side of the building (go past the front entrance, Timpsons and the exit doors and Sam will meet you at the end of that path).

Please note that for the time being, our Group Runs will start in various outdoor locations meaning that lockers, toilets and refreshment facilities may not be available before and after the Group Run. Despite the bad weather, Goodgym Swindon reigns when it pours!!

Report written by Simon Sperring

On a cool, wet Tuesday evening a decade of Goodgymmers gathered in Sainsburys car park for tonights group run to the Toothill farmhouse for a session of weeding in the grounds of the recently refurbished junior youth club.

After the introduction to the session by Run Leader Simon we had a Olympic related dilemma in the ice breaker, What sport or activity would you like to see included in the Olympic Games? We had a variety of answers ranging from Tiddywinks, snooker to Tracey sleighing!!

All our congratulations and best wishes were offered to the recently married Mike and Emily Oakes.

The group decided to all walk together with Gina back marking and Simon taking the helm at the front, quite a dangerous move as he initially could not find the way out of the car park!! The footpath taking us towards Wootten Bassett road was found and off we went!

We were met at the Toothill Farmhouse by Kelly and her crew who set the tone for the evening by greeting us with β€œTea or Coffee?”. The majority took them up on their offer while the weather took a turn for the worse and the heavens opened. While we waited for the rain to ease we took the opportunity to look around the farmhouse and a catch up on what has been achieved through COVID and the lockdowns. The transformation is incredible with new carpets, fixtures and fittings and a funky colour scheme. They are nearly ready for the grand reopening in a few weeks time.

Some of the group sorted out the arts and craft while the rest of us braved the conditions to weed, trim and tidy up the entrance and court yard. The rain persisted, but so did we and 2 dumpy bags were filled with garden waste before time was up and it was time to head back.

Despite the inclement weather we all had a fantastic evening and we look forward to returning to the farmhouse in the near future.

Gardening at Toothill Farmhouse!

Tue 27 Jul 18:00 pm
Sainsbury's Bridgemead, Paddington Drive, Swindon, SN5 7AA
To tidy up the garden area to make it more accessible and appealing

So it's our second post-lockdown Group Run (yay!) and we will be running approximately 3km in total; from Sainsbury's Bridgemead to Toothill Farmhouse and back, to help with a gardening task. We have been here many times before and very excited to be helping Shelly and the team again; the last time we visited was in January 2020 where there was lots of sorting, cleaning, chatting and tea drinking. Check out the report here.

Toothill Farmhouse is one of our regular venues and the home of a number of clubs, including a popular Youth Club in the area and it is entirely managed by volunteers who need some support maintaining the site.

A Herculean triumph!

Report written by Sam Coxon

GoodGym Swindon were back at Bridlewood Primary School this evening to continue work on reestablishing the pathway of the daily mile track overgrown by the grass and weeds. Tonight, we hit a milestone - armed with Simon’s twisty tools we completed the outbound straight, turned the corner and now making our way behind the footballs goals down the back edge of the field. We were also delighted to meet and welcome Emma along for the first time.

To keep us entertained this evening, we answered some of life’s most important questions: What’s our favourite Disney film? Charles opting for classics, Adam choosing more recent films, and Emma settling with two. Safe to say, none of us could agree on just one! Next up, what should and definitely should not go on a pizza? Emma, admitting in her own words that she is β€˜a sinner’ where pineapple is concerned whilst Simon is happy with whatever he gets.. so long as it’s pizza or jacket potato.. yum! All this, whilst enjoying the sounds of a local residents varied music taste including the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, Meatloaf and a song about vindaloo.. which leads me to just one final question, the question everyone (but Charles it seems) is asking, is it really coming home on Sunday?!
