It’s time to trash the competition in the latest sporting trend: competitive litter picking.

Originating in Japan in 2008, Spogomi combines “sport” with gomihiroi (the Japanese word for picking up rubbish). Competitive litter picking a fun way to protect our environment and our oceans, one scrap at a time.

In 2023, the UK team were crowned world champions in Tokyo—now it’s your chance to carry on the legacy. From Tokyo champs to Southampton legends, grab a teammate or enter solo and be part of the solution, not the pollution. You’ll have 45 minutes to pick and sort as much litter as possible. Could you be crowned Southampton’s best litter picker?

Spogomi is for everyone, all you need is a can-do attitude and a competitive spirit. One person’s trash is another one’s treasure.

The fun of SPOGOMI is that it requires teamwork, strategy and tactics. We encourage you to sign up in teams of three. However, individuals and pairs can sign up too and we’ll create new teams on the day.

Meeting place: The Artisan in Guildhall Square. The competition area for picking up litter will be shared with participants shortly before the event. Please note: The venue and the competition area are step free. The competition area includes parks with grass and gravel surfaces. The event will be held rain or shine. It may be cancelled in case of stormy weather.

Please note that this event will involve real litter picking and moving around parts of Southampton under your own guidance. Full instructions and safety equipment will be provided, but you take part at your own risk.

Please meet at the Artisan cafe at 9:50 so we can be briefed. Equipment provided - new people welcome. Wear your GoodGym T-shirt and see you there!

    What to look out for
