The cold, dark nights of winter can sometimes be a tough time for GoodGym. As a trainer it is often challenging to find jobs for the group to do during the post Christmas lull. With some of our more traditional tasks difficult to do during headtorch season, we have to look for alternative ways to perform a good turn for our local community on a Tuesday night. Fortunately this year GoodGym has made the acquaintance of Louise Addison from the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, and Louise has kept us supplied with tasks during the sometimes barren weeks of January.

Once again last night GoodGym were pounding the streets of Huddersfield distributing dozens of leaflets promoting Forget Me Not’s Charity Lottery, just one of the many initiatives designed to ensure the vital work of our local children’s hospice continues unabated. In a contrast to the challenging conditions of Storm Brendan last week, the weather was remarkably benign as four GoodGymmers set forth for the 3K run up to Fixby. In addition to GoodGym Huddersfield regulars Kati Law and Ben Godfrey, we were joined by first time group runner Gillian Cooney. Gillian had been brought along to the Community Mission in Gledholt Woods last Sunday by her GoodGymming daughter Rachel. It was great to see her come along for a group run too, hopefully she’s caught the GoodGym bug.

The 300 or so lottery flyers were weighing heavy in my rucksack on the run up to Fixby, so I was glad to get them divided up into four (roughly) equal piles and get the GoodGymmers posting. It would be something of a challenge to get them all delivered in the 60 minutes we had available, but with characteristic enthusiasm the guys were up for it and were soon running up and down driveways and paths in sequence, and to my surprise the supplies of flyers rapidly diminished. The houses Netheroyd Hill, Lightridge Road, Gernhill Avenue and Fixby Road all heard about the Forget Me Not Lottery last night and as we reached Fixby roundabout we literally only had a handful of flyers left. These final few were posted as we ran back down Bradford Road towards the Stadium with tired legs and a warm glow in our hearts!

Thanks to all of last night’s GoodGym crew, I won’t forget that you are definitely all leafleting heroes!
