Keep calm and curry on

Saturday 22nd July 2023

What's a community mission at Tower Hamlets without seeing Laura? I was surprised to see Laura at the Bernie Cameron community centre. She was there from 12pm and helped run the event. I went there for the wrap-up at 4 pm. She introduced me to Fathima and they have almost finished wrapping up the events. The kitchen was getting cleared by packing the leftover food for volunteers and others.

I got a plate of Biryani and Curry and left it aside and went to help the other guys move the table. It doesn't take much time to move all the tables and chairs.

The food must go in the report - Louise

Louise, after having a busy GoodGym day with 3 missions, joined me and we started moving the folded tables across the hall. We managed to capture Laura in our cameras before she left for the day.

Then we took a short break and had the food. It's Lamb biriyani and vegetable curry. It was a bit spicy but we both chugged it down like champions.

It's always good if they feed us in the missions - Louise

Louise was hungry when she reached the community center. After having a plate, we are back to full energy and started sweeping the hall. It's quite a big hall and took us 5-10 minutes to finish that.

Before leaving we were asked to take some Bananas and Satsumas with us. Louise transferred half of hers to me and we walked towards the station nearby and left fulfilled.

That's a wrap

Saturday 8th July 2023

I came back for the wrapping up part after the morning setup in the Teviot community center. I was surprised to be welcomed by Laura, the Area Activator of Tower Hamlets.

I'm sure they were talking about you Madhan - Laura

Stacking the chairs, moving them inside. Wiping the tables, folding them, and moving them inside was what I did most of the evening. As it rained a bit in the evening, some of the marquee tents had water lagged on the top. Unfortunately, the water fell on one of the volunteers when we were folding the tents.

We needed someone with muscle, like you - Kelly to Madhan

When I was leaving I thought of taking a group picture with the organiser volunteers. Then it grew and all the volunteers of different sections joined. That was the best moment of the evening.

While leaving I had some leftover wraps and pastries and finished my dinner there.

Ways of water

Saturday 8th July 2023

I went early for my first community mission with Tower-Hamlets. Once I reached the Teviot Community Center, I can already see some volunteers wrapping the bunting around the fence. Once I introduced myself that I'm from GoodGym, they didn't recognize Goodgym. I said volunteer and then their eyes brightened. I was given some hardcore balloons to blow. They were pretty tough to blow. After blowing around 15 balloons, I managed to tie them to the fence where there are less leaves so that they won't pop

Next, we were putting the marquee tents and moved them around the play area. We put one game in each of the tents. Jenga is the only game that I can recognize. But most of them were for kids. There was one inflatable that needed filling with water. One of the volunteers, Bobby put me in charge of that. There is no pipe nearby. So I had to get water in a bucket from the kitchen area 100 feet away and need to fill the mini duck pool. After one attempt, I thought it was going to take at least 10 more buckets to fill it. I happened to find a garden hose nearby, but it was short. But it reduced the bucket carrying distance by 1/4th. Spent around 20 minutes doing that task before wrapping up my morning session with them.

Fresh chai was on the counter, which the lady at the counter explained, was brewed by a Pakistani lady for 1 hour. I got myself a karak chai and started walking towards my next task.
