Monday 1st March 2021

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

3 local Goodgym folks met up at The Angel Church on Sadler's Wells, Islington on Monday evening, to help with our weekly meal distribution task. The People's Army cook up hundreds of meals for households, families and residential homes across the Islington borough. John cycled towards Caledonian Park for his drop-offs, Steve pedalled to just beyond Arsenal Stadium and Simon walked up to Archway and Elthorne Road for his deliveries. 38 ready meals and home-made cakes were delivered in total. Well done everyone!

A soup-er day

Wednesday 21st April 2021

Written by Emily (She/her)

Forest Court is a beautiful community garden for disabled and elderly residents of the block of flats next door. A lot of work has gone into it over the winter, but there's still a lot to do! They will be building a new patio area with a fire pit and seating for the residents, and planting several vegetable patches.

My first job was to move a big pile of bricks which were making it difficult for residents in wheelchairs to get into the garden. I've uploaded a picture of the finished product with my canine assistant for the day! The wall in the picture will eventually gave a mural (if anybody knows an artist please let me know)!

My second job was clearing bramble roots and raking the earth on a disused patch of dirt. When it's cleared, they hope to plant strawberries and other fruits. I've uploaded some pictures of after and before.

Meanwhile some volunteers from the People's Army were clearing the patch for the new patio, and another area for vegetables.

Our lovely host also served homemade spicy carrot soup and bread (from a local Turkish shop) at lunch time. It was delicious and very welcome after all the heavy lifting!

We made a lot of progress today but there's still a lot to do - they'd be very grateful for more volunteers for the next session on Friday.

People Need Parcels

Monday 29th March 2021

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

3 Goodgymmers traveled to The Angel Church near Sadler's Wells, to help The People's Army with their foodbank project. We were treated to a beautiful sunny evening- perfect for cycle and walking deliveries across Islington, Archway and Arsenal boroughs. Laura and Tom pedaled up to North London (Tom had just completed his first ultra marathon, so was doing this on tired legs!), and AA Simon walked to a residential home off Cally Road.

Smashing work, guys. We have a great crew signed up for next week- Looking forward to it!

Angel Army

Monday 22nd March 2021

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Area Activator Simon, Tracy, Laura and Tom met at the Angel Church on Monday to help at The People's Army. The church also doubles up as a community food bank, so Goodgym Islington arranged with volunteer coordinator Hazel to deliver 54 meals to various households across Islington, Arsenal, Highbury and Archway. We had a mix of cyclists and walkers on hand, and we shared the meals fairly between us, dropping off our final deliveries as close to our own households as possible. Well done all, great work!
