Scouting for rubbish

Wednesday 31st July 2019

Written by Rob

Unfortunately tonight’s task was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, but not to worry there’s always litter to be picked up in the local parks.

So we were off to Tudor Grange Park expecting a lot of litter due to the Solihull music fest that had taken place at the weekend. Some of our members had enjoyed walking their dog in the park whilst their favourite band was on. As we expected, there was a lot of leftover litter so we got straight to work.

As it was John’s first time back since we started the pull-up challenge, he had to give it a go. After saying he wouldn’t be very good at it, he still managed to do 5! Chris then followed with 6 and Fiona did 1 for the first time which is an excellent achievement!

After this little bit of fun it was time to run to Brueton park, for more litter picking and our 4 minute hill session.

Everyone put in a great effort tonight - John showing us his speed leading the way, Chris hot on his tail, shortly followed by Fiona. Not only is running uphill great for your stamina, but it's also great for building leg muscles, which helps with your speed.

After the short run back, it was time for a quick stretch and to come up with tonight’s pun.

See you all next week.

Scout and about in the garden

Wednesday 19th June 2019

Written by Rob

Great to see everyone tonight for a sunny evening run!

Tonight we were at the Scout hut for the first time. After a quick run there we met Chris who told us all about what the Scouts do there on their 13 acres of land.

The first task was to move some pallets from the entrance, Kate and Chris then moved onto digging a tree that had not survived the winter after being planted last year. Meanwhile the rest of the group were raking and clearing an area by the fence ready to plant some holly bushes. This proved to be quite a challenge, as the ground was full of bricks and big roots from the trees! Everyone did a great job digging the four holes that were needed.

Once all the plants were in the ground, it was time to help move some slabs ready to be laid next week. To add a bit of fitness to the task I got you all squatting to pick the slabs up and to put them back down, with a sprint back to pick up another one.

While the girls where doing this, Chris was in the woods chopping back some of the overgrown bushes that had started to cover the path. He did get the short straw though and failed to avoid the mosquitoes!

As the task was a fitness session in itself, we spent longer there helping Chris out and doing some valuable work for the Scouts. We then enjoyed a nice run back to base to finish off with a quick stretch.

Next week we are back at the very first task - Newlands Bishop farm - not one to be missed!

See you then, Rob
