Helping at our allotment

An older member needs help
One of our older members was poorly last year and spent most of last year self isolating. He has come back to the allotments this year and would like to try to keep his allotment going, he needs help to start it up again. The soil is very good but full of weeds. He needs people to clear it of weeds.

A Little-over grown plot

Saturday 10th July 2021

Written by Rachel Carthy

The sun was out for just three GoodGym members to clear a large allotment plot in Littleover so plot holder Alan could enjoy growing his own food once again. Due to the pandemic and for health reasons, Alan hadn't been able to tend to his plot as much as he would liked to have recently and support from GoodGym was much appreciated.

Tools were gratefully provided by the allotment secretary Fran who got stuck in with us before finding some time to tend to her own plot. A slice of cake each and the offer of a drink as there was mains water nearby and facilities for a kettle was much appreciated to spur us on. Tracey and Gwyn worked wonders again as the dynamic duo.

We all enjoyed chatting to Alan about what he was planning to grow on his plot and the sort of things he's been growing over the years...including bags and bags of potatoes. We were also welcomed to have a nosy at some of the other plots by some of the keen growers and got to see some local residents of their plots including Amazon parrots, lovebirds and newts to name a few. We were also joined by Dexter, a pet of one of Alan's family members, who did his best to entertain us and kept cool by laying down on the soil we'd just turned...something we might have all considered if we had something older than our GoodGym tops on.

We're looking forward to hearing about progress on Alan's plot when he's back growing veg again.
