GROW Holland Town

Keeping the estate green

Holland Town Gardening Club looks after some of the green spaces on Holland Town Estate, a council estate near Oval. In particular GoodGym has helped residents to improve and maintain one of the main playgrounds on the Estate. It used to be a no-go area full of weeds, broken glass and dog mess. With the help of Good Gym it is now an oasis of wildlife-friendly flowers and fruit bushes and is now used by families. GoodGym has helped out by doing some of the heavy work of digging and removing pernicious weeds, as well as the general maintenance tasks of weeding and watering and regular litter picking.

They also help with one-off jobs like removing ivy that was growing into a resident's windows, joining residents to plant spring bulbs around the Estate, and digging over and sowing flower seeds in a disabled resident's garden.

120 GoodGymers have supported GROW Holland Town with 6 tasks.

Lambeth take a walk on the wild side

Tuesday 17th April 2018

Written by Katie Welford

It was a lovely warm April evening - hooray! SO MANY people turned up, including a healthy dose of lovely new runners. This was ideal as there was lots to do.

A smaller group ran 1 mile down Brixton road, led by Issy and John, to help Ameena at Holland Town Estate. The playground park area is always in need of some de-weeding and pruning and GoodGym are the ones to do it!

The rest of us headed over to Clapham Common to continue our creation of the wildflower meadow. We ran in two groups so as not to cause too much of a commotion en route. Katie led a team along Clapham High Street and George took his lot via Acre Lane. On arrival, there was lots to do! Some people set about watering the flowers already planted ahead of the expected hot weather, whilst the rest took up spades and forks to remove the next strip of turf and turn the soil over once done. We had wheelbarrow runners and people waiting at the other end to unload the turf. It was a well oiled machine and everyone got really stuck in.

Both tasks were a great workout for arms and core and so we did lots of nice stretches when we got back and then headed off to the pub on our monthly social.

Well done Lambeth!

Don't pancake! GoodGym Love Running!

Tuesday 13th February 2018

Written by Katie Welford

'Twas the night before Valentine's and also Pancake Day. With such reason to celebrate it was amazing that anyone turned up at all. But turn up they did! We welcomed new Portsmouth trainer Katie and split into two groups.

Group 1 headed off on a mega long run to help Streatham Youth and Community Trust. Their youth centre needed a good old spring clean and so 17 sweaty individuals set about it with aplomb. There was light bulb changing, window cleaning and throwing away of pictures drawn by young people - along with their dreams. At an 11km round trip, they all earned their Love Running badge on Strava in one fell swoop!

Group 2 stuck a little closer to home, heading 2.5km down to Holland town estate to cut back some spiky roses and weed some stubborn weeds. Once back at Papa's, we did a bit more sorting of the broken toys from the good ones and then chopped back some twigs sprouting from a big tree. Portsmouth Katie led a nice fitness session and then we all did some stretches and retreated to the warmth of home and pancakes.

Top running Lambeth!

Everything you say to me takes me one step closer to the hedge, and I'm about to rake

Tuesday 4th July 2017

Written by Katie Welford

Loads of excellent runners ran between 3 and 12k to support THREE tasks across Lambeth. Then James wrote a pun based on Linkin Park's appearance at Brixton Academy that evening. No raking was involved in this run

It was a lovely hot evening and that meant we had a bunch of lovely new starters - unlike last week when everyone was at home cos it rained. After a quick intro, the long run group set off, led by Tom Hunter, to Streatham Common and the beautiful Rookery Gardens. A solid 5.5km away, this isn't a run we do often but on a summer evening like this, a long run and weeding some crazy paving is just the ticket!

Here's the lowdown from Tom:

11 Runners braved a colossal 11km round trip to the far-flung location of the Rookery in Streatham Common. It was a lovely evening for it, with some stunning views of South London along the way.

We met Dominic who informed us that as a protected site, The Rookery is forbidden from using chemicals to kill their weeds. So they have to take care of them the old fashioned way... With a committed group of sweaty runners and a selection of trowels. Absolutely no problem at all for our group and with Steve demonstrating superior broom handling ability, we had the whole place looking even more splendid.

Despite the offer of a bus ride back. Nobody was even the slightest bit interested! (and definitely not because we had forgotten our oyster cards either!) We then stormed it back home in amazing time. Well done all!

The rest of us split into two groups and did a warm up based on animals, inspired by Tom Benson's love of Lekkido the Lobster. James also did some singing of Linkin Park songs. Then we were off!

Did you know Linkin Park are playing at the Academy? Asked James

One group went with Sarah back to Holland Park Estate to finish off making a cascade flower bed by adding some logs to create steps. The second went with Katie to St. Mark's Primary School near Oval. They have an amazing outdoor space, which needed some weeding and lots of painting. We did some calf strengthening exercises and then headed off home all hot and sweaty.

NICE!

A scythe for saw eyes

Tuesday 20th June 2017

Written by Katie Welford

26 lovely runners braved the heat to smash out THREE tasks across Lambeth!

First up, big well done to Issy who got her wings t-shirt today. Hooray!

It was a scorcher in Lambeth and we had THREE tasks to be getting on with.

Task 1 was 1 mile down Brixton Road to Holland Park Estate. Our job was to saw some wood, find the ends of some terrible bind weed, and do some serious watering. We also began to make a tiered garden bolstered up by big logs to stop the soil all falling down.

Task 2 was a bit further to Loughborough Junction, where Beth had this to say: A team of eight headed off on a short run to Loughborough Junction farm where we were joined by Oli, an ex-goodgym Lambeth runner who was so taken by the farm on a group run a couple of years ago that he's been volunteering there ever since. The site is owned by the council who have plans for some building work, which means a few things need to be moved around. Our task was to move as much soil as possible from one corner of the farm to another. After a solid 45 minutes of shoveling and barrowing we'd emptied one bag and made a serious dent in the others.

Task 3 was further still, up to Palace Road Nature Gardens. John was leading. Elise suggested a detour. They all got lost but then eventually found Gerry. He got some people SCYTHING! Some people did some litter picking and others swept the path so it was nice and tidy. Lovely stuff.

We got wind of a very grave situation, which left us in a bind

Tuesday 30th May 2017

Written by Katie Welford

48 bloody excellent humans ran to THREE tasks in Lambeth to help sort a playground on a community estate, to jazz up Brixton Windmill and to help the bees!

Well. So much happened I don't even know where to start. Not happy with having 47 runners last week, tonight we went one better, with 48 glorious souls joining in our weekly group run. This is EXCELLENT. It means we can do some serious good all over Lambeth and tonight we did three tasks.

BUT FIRST! The winners of the May Shit Prize of the Month (SPOTM) were: George, who wrote a fantastic blog about how GoodGym is helping her deal with depression and Rose who has totally smashed good deeds this month with a total of 9! She only got involved in GoodGym a few months ago and has got started with a coach and is generally awesome. Rose is the proud winner of a prize donated by Sylvie - to be her massage dummy during her qualification. OUCH!

Task 1 was a new run to Brixton Windmill - run report by Tom Benson So I was delighted when Katie told me I was going to the windmill. The many years of GoodGym Lambeth adventures has never taken me there and what a treat it was. After I took team windmill on a bit a detour, we were warmly greeted by Jean, Niv and Steve to tell us what we had in store. The aim of the game was removing one fence and taking it over to a herb garden and reinstalling it to help protect the area, whilst at the same time tidying up both patches by removing weeds and woodchips and giving the herb garden a nice layer of top soil to boot. So in GoodGym style we whacked on our gloves and got cooking. After 30-mins it was operation complete, Jean and co were delighted and we definitely represented the phrase 'many hands make light work' expertly. On the way back I decided to take team windmill on another little detour but all in all a cracking night, nice one Windmillers.

Task 2 was a return to Ameena at Holland Park Estate - run report by Katie Welford A short run and a lovely small but determined group. Our mission was to unravel bind weed from the bushes around the park. You weren't allowed to pull it but instead get right down to the root and yank it out from there. This was tougher than it sounded and some hardy runners literally got in bushes and unravelled yards of the pesky weed. Rich and a team of fearless litter pickers really got the place looking tidy and Andrea got to work giving the whole place a good old water. Stellar work gang!

Task 3 saw a return to Kennington Park and the lovely Bee project - run report by George Bright We were LIED TO and DUG A GRAVE.

NB This information has yet to be corroborated by official third party sources. Other tasks included planting trees and sorting out the bee garden. Nice!

All in all, a lot of running and a lot of good!
