A Cleaner Community Fridge

Saturday 27th April

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Sheila joined taskowner Fran for a cleaning session at the Community Fridge. There have been a few changes since I was last there and they have now introduced a more rigorous cleaning regime at the end of every shop session. The difference in the cleanliness was evident, which made our job much easier. Fran cleaned the shelving housing the tinned items, whilst Sheila cleaned all the baskets which house the perishable items in the fridge. After cleaning the waste bins and the floor, we were done!

Dream Cleaning Team

Saturday 9th March

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Rachel and Sheila went to help out at the Community Fridge for our regular deep-cleaning session. We arrived at the same time as a food delivery, and one of the fridges was full of food so we were a bit more limited than usual with how much we could clean. However we still managed to clean one of the fridges, the deli counter, the drawers in the island, the bread shelves and anything else we could find. Rachel gave the floor a good hoover, and everything looked much cleaner, ready for the next shop opening on Tuesday. Thanks to Clare for stepping in to host us.

The Singing Fridges

Saturday 27th January

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Jen, Nic and Sheila went to help taskowner Fran do our regular deep clean of the Community Fridge. This amazing charity aims to reduce food wate by collecting near end-date produce from supermarkets and selling it at low prices at their facility in Windsor. As usual the fridges all needed a good clean, so Nic took on washing up the shelves and baskets whilst Jen and Sheila cleaned the insides of the fridges. The fridges started singing to indicate they had been open too long, each with their own little tune! Meanwhile Fran cleaned the shelving and rearranged the stock to make an attractive display. Once everything had been washed, dried and wiped clean, Jen gave the floor a good mop with our favourite mop and bucket set ( worth coming just to see this in action!), and we edged out of the door for our traditional selfie. Lovely and clean for opening next week.

Lefty Loosey - or is it?

Saturday 4th November 2023

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Sara, Sol and Sheila joined taskowner Fran at the Community Fridge in Windsor to give the place a deep-clean. We cleaned the fridges and freezers, including all the produce trays, so they are all squeaky clean. Our hard work in previous sessions has paid off - we are now like a well-oiled machine. Fran gave the deli counter a good polish, and we taught Sol the 'Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty' phrase for remembering which way screws turn. But the Sara found that it doesn't always work for fridges...... It was great to catch up with everyone again, and we made a date for the next session in the New Year, so we wished Fran a Merry Christmas (!) before departing............ Kudos to Sol for travelling sustainably by train and then walking all the way back to Maidenhead, to Sheila for cycling, both getting a good soaking on the way home. And to Sara for coming out to help with this mission before travelling down to the South Coast for the weekend.

Inner Peace (and a Clean Community Fridge)

Saturday 9th September 2023

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Sol, Jenni and Sheila met with taskowner Fran at the Community Fridge, which aims to reduce food waste by redistributing food that's near to its sell by date. Sol and Sheila were feeling virtuous after having completed Parkrun/walk earlier that morning. our task was to give the place a good clean. Sheila took all of the shelves out of the fridge and gave them a good clean while Sol cleaned out the freezer, cleaned the kickboards and the floor. Jenni cleaned all the shelves along one side and then hoovered the floor and inside the drawers, while Fran cleaned the deli counter. Finally we gave the bins a good disinfect by which time everything was sparkly clean and ready for business. Fran gave each of us a sachet of sweet vanilla and fig rooibos tea which promised us inner peace. Jenni set off to drive up to Manchester, Sol walked back to her car parked on the other side of town and Sheila cycled back home. We all had some inner peace from the satisfaction of a job well done

Lefty -Loosey, Righty-Tighty

Saturday 8th July 2023

Written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Sara and Sheila made a small, but perfectly-formed team when they met with taskowner Fran at the Community Fridge. Today's task was to take apart the refrigerated display cabinet and give it a really good clean. We carefully took it apart, and while Sara went off to wash some of the removable parts, Fran and Sheila cleaned the rest of the cabinet. We got into all those nooks and crannies which hadn't been reached in a while. Sara came to rescue when we needed some extra pieces removing - she had a comprehensive tool kit in her car, and also come out with the accompanying phrase 'Lefty-Loosey, Righty-Tighty' to make sure we were using the tools in the right direction. I love that phrase and you can always rely on Sara to have a practical solution to any problem. We soon had the cabinet all sparkly clean, ✨️ and fit for food use again. We were very pleased with our morning's work
