NINE noble GoodGymers headed to BIADS headquarters to help sort out the gravel pit and outdoor space!
On what had turned out to be a lovely evening, we met outside the meeting point, a huge hoard of us raring to go! Tonight we were joined by Abi from GG Sheffield - thanks for coming, lets give her a cheer here.
After a quick warm up of the can-can and exaggerated skipping, whilst the week-night drinkers oggled on, we headed off on the short run there.
I have to work in Barnsley you know - Mr Steele
Janet, the volunteer coordinator for BIADS, was very happy to see us as were Jack and Wally, the volunteer gardeners! The area that needed gravelling had already been prepared by some volunteers during the week, so we set to work laying the membrane on top of the soil and moving the heavy bags of gravel ready to lay. Everyone got stuck in lifting bags, pouring gravel, raking and sweeping. It turned out that 98 year old Jack was rather particular when it came to how he'd like it done, project managing from his zimmer frame with VERY high standards as Abi found out!
I'm managing, I'm not here to work! - Jack
Once most of the gravel was down, we broke off into groups to complete a few odd jobs. There was a patch a gravel that needed removing to place a membrane down and then putting back, James, Rachael, Sharon and Jason got on with that - it was a toughie! Meanwhile, Mairead, Abi and Debbie helped Wally with some planting and Clair fired up the lawnmower and did laps of the lawn! We finished with a bit of last minute weeding before doing a quick fitness session on the lawn!
Where's Wally!?
For the fitness session, I split the group in to two groups of four, and lettered everyone A-D. Using resisitance bands, we had:
They did this for 45 seconds and then switched! It was lots of fun!
From there we ran back to base via the huge hill, Fitzwilliam street which really is a beast! Whilst catching our breath we did some stretching, focussing on the calves and chatted about next week.
Good Luck to Sharon whose running the Liverpool half marathon this weekend and to Clair who will be cycling 100km across London over night! And well done to Rachael for completing another 10k around Rother Valley country park last weekend!
See you all next week! Sign up HERE.
