Bark to the Future

Sunday 21st April

Written by Jer Boon

Great Scott! There was a big sense of deja vu when we arrived at Alice Park, in the shape of a great big pile of bark chips sitting on a tarpaulin just outside the gate.

Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads - because the bark chip pile was there to help us finish off the series of paths we've been working on for the past few sessions.

It's our density to finish this path and so at a speed which possibly approached 88mph, we got to work wheelbarrowing chips around the site.

We finished in short order, stopped for a nice chat and a coffee and then... made like a tree and got out of there.

Setting our boundaries!

Sunday 10th March

Written by Helen Conner (she/her)

With lots of furry friend visitors to the park, we were asked to create a natural boundary hedge to protect a flower bed. Using willow we twisted and weaved the willow around existing posts to create a decorative hedge.

It took us just 1 hour and you can see from the photos that it's quite decorative :)

Well done team

I heard it on the grape vine..

Sunday 11th February

Written by Helen Conner (she/her)

7 Goodymers headed to Alice park to help with a variety of tasks.

We welcomed a new Goodgymer to the team! Welcome Vish it was lovely to meet you

We divided into two teams. Half the team were sawing wood and then using the wood to create a new natural fence in the garden.
Whilst the other half of the team were up and down ladders creating a bamboo frame to support the new grape vines.
We look forward to seeing the grape vines grow and provide a new natural shelter at the back of the garden.

As usual, the time went quickly and before we knew it, it was time for a rewarding hot drink and biscuit.

We look forward to joining the Alice Park volunteers again next month to finish our new boundary fence :)

Coming to a screen near you

Sunday 21st January

Who knew hazel was so bendy...?

Kathy our task owner arrived with a boot load of hazel which we unloaded and carried to the organic garden. We sorted the hazel into piles and picked the most suitable cuts for the uprights and the others for the winding around the posts to create a natural fence.

It was surprisingly easier than first thought.
Aaron and Alan took it in turns to swing the huge hammer to create the holes for the posts whilst the rest of us weaved the hazel around the posts.

In only 1 hour, we were almost finished. But alas we ran out of hazel! We look forward to completing this project next time we visit.

Wreath what you sow

Sunday 26th November 2023

Written by Jer Boon

This month's visit to Alice Park saw us continuing work on the new path which we'd made a start on last month.

With seven pairs of hands this time, we made fairly quick work of digging out the trench in the line of the path, ready for future bark chipping. And also started off the fencing down on side of that by hammering in stakes at regular intervals.

After a refreshment break, some of us joined in the community session of Christmas wreath making which was also going on today.

Watch this space for more path updates from future sessions...

The semi-circle of life

Saturday 21st October 2023

Written by Jer Boon

Time for another session of redesigning at Alice Park community garden.

Couple of tasks today. First up, to level off a 5x1 metre patch of ground where a cold frame is going to go.

If you don’t know what a cold frame is… that’s why we go along to gardening tasks, to learn stuff like this 🤣

The area needs to be level, at least within itself. It wasn’t far off to begin with, so mostly just needed a little scalping here and there and a bit of soil redistribution.

A local robin was flitting around and paying big interest in our levelling. We worked out why after digging up a worm - Mrs robin was straight on it! Circle of GoodGym life!!

After a tea break we set out measuring a line where a semi-circular path is going to go. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that we already spent a few sessions working on a similar path - and the idea is to mirror that one, so as to make a pleasing symmetrical space for passing photo-drones and other garden users.

Watch this space for more on that, I’m sure…
