AgeUk Donations Stirred not Shaken

Sunday 16th February 2020

Written by Chris Plester

Rachel, Andy and Chris from Goodgym Solihull helped Solihull Age UK fundraising in Tescos . First up was Rachel from 2-3, Rachel and Charlotte (a volunteer from AgeUK)took their strategic positions with collection buckets and stickers. A steady stream of donations followed, Chris and Andy took over at 3-4 ,we did not shake our buckets once honest.. we had quite a few good conversations about Goodgym and AgeUk with the shoppers. I even got invited to dinner! (an annual volunteers dinner). Time flew, it is surprising how few people use real cash these days!. Becky from AgeUK arrived at 4 to collect our buckets and was really pleased at our efforts- not that it was a competition but Rachel and My bucket was ever so slightly lighter- must be the notes! A great afternoons work well done team.

GoodGym Solihull will always deliver

Wednesday 29th January 2020

Written by Rob

Great to see everyone tonight! A big shout out to Fiona who has become a coach runner this week and also to Raul who did two half marathons at the weekend, a run Monday night, Birmingham GoodGym on Tuesday and then Solihull with us - I don’t know how he’s still going!

For tonight’s task we were delivering flyers for Breast Cancer Haven, who are advertising their upcoming fundraising events and AgeUK Solihull, informing people about all the work they do for the elderly in the local area.

Once we had run to our designated roads we split off into three groups of two and managed to deliver all 300 leaflets in no time!

Tonight’s fitness session was a HIIT work out consisting of thirty second sprints followed by thirty second rests, for a total of four minutes. A HIIT workout helps to improve both endurance and anaerobic performance, meaning you burn more calories over a longer period of time after the exercise.

After this it was time to run back to base for a quick stretch and then to head on our way home.

Great work tonight and see you all next week.

We’re on flyer!

Wednesday 21st August 2019

Written by Rob

Tonight it was great to welcome back Logan after he’d been out with a shoulder injury for a few months. We’re glad to have you back running with us!

For our task tonight, we were handing out leaflets for AgeUK Solihull spreading the word about all the good they do in the local community. Never to miss an opportunity to spread the word about GoodGym, we were also handing out GoodGym Solihull flyers to promote our group run and the great work we do in Solihull.

After that, we hit Tudor Grange park for our one mile time trail. As it was Logan’s first time doing this, he has now set his 1 mile PB, ready to beat it next time! Also a shout out to Rachel who beat her PB! As ever Fiona put in a great effort, though unfortunately she can’t remember if she beat her PB so we are saying she did to have a full set!

After we had all caught our breaths back, we headed back to base, on a slightly longer route through Brueton Park to up the kilometres - great work everyone.

Next week is a new task - we’ll be gardening at Hob’s Moat Library and it would be great to see you there! Look forward to seeing you all then.

High Rollers

Wednesday 22nd May 2019

It was great to see everyone tonight for GoodGym Solihull’s tenth run!

Tonight’s task we were back at Age UK charity shop to do some more painting. It’s really great to see how much we have achieved since our first visit to Veronica and the shop.

Once we had finished painting another wall in the shop, it was off to Tudor Grange Park to do a sprint work out. We split into two groups of three and it was a race to see who could get all their team mates from one side to the other and back again. Liam, Fiona and Rachel managed to win 2-1, so congrats to them and great work everyone!

Sprinting in short blasts helps your body build up stamina and is great if you can incorporate it into a normal run. This could be done just by adding short blasts of sprinting in between lampposts or between each crossroad.

Then it was time for a longer run back to base, lead by Chris through Brueton Park, and a quick stretch to finish off.

I am away next week, so Aidan will be leading the run in my absence when the group will be heading to Tudor Grange Park for some more litter picking. Please give him a warm welcome to GoodGym Solihull and I shall see you in two weeks!

Spreading the word

Wednesday 8th May 2019

Written by Rob

Great to see everyone tonight, especially for venturing out on such a rainy day! We were very lucky and the rain managed to hold off for our run.

A massive well done to Debbie and Sarah, who not only came to their very first Solihull GoodGym but it was also their first time running in years! We hope to see you both again next week.

For tonight’s task, we were spreading the word about GoodGym Solihull by handing out leaflets to all the local organisations and anyone who ran past us along the way. Still being relatively new to the area, it was great to get our message out there to more people about how we get fit and do good!

After that, it was off to Brueton Park to do a fitness session.

This consisted of circuits, doing 30 seconds of hard effort followed by 30 seconds rest, repeating each exercise twice. We did high knees, squats, lunges and basketball shots. Everyone did an excellent job and really pushed each other through it!

After we had got your breaths back it was time for the short run back to base, to finish off with some cool down stretches.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week when we are going to back to The Courtyard (a slightly longer run than usual). We will be starting to paint the flower beds ready for the summer months and do some more gardening!

Brushing up on our painting skills

Wednesday 1st May 2019

Written by Rob

Great to see everyone tonight, especially Balal after running the Shakespeare marathon at the weekend.

For tonight’s task we were back at Age UK charity shop, continuing where we left off with the painting!

A massive well done to everyone, the work we’ve done there is having a great impact on the shop and Veronica really appreciates all the painting we’ve done so far. We’ll be back next week for the final time, painting anyway.

After the obligatory photo, we were on our way to Tudor Grange park for a pyramid session. This involves running hard for increasing intervals (from 30 seconds to 1 minute) with 30 seconds rest in between. Everyone pushed themselves and showed good commitment to the session. Liam and George lead at front with Rachel and Jess pushing each other along.

See you all next week to finish off the last bit of painting and look upon the great work we’ve achieved.
