Start spreading the yews*, we’re leaf-ing today

Bristol Report written by Melanie Young (she/her)

A soggy Friday morning was made so much better with a visit to the city farm, grabbing some wheelbarrows (taking a sneaky peak at the goats) and filling them with shovels, woodchip and rakes to tidy and spread in the wildlife area.

Two GG couples so social-distancing was super-simple and we made short work of the leaves before covering in a good layer of chipping.

We then checked out the Hallowe’en set-up and tried to work out whodunnit to the pumpkin 🎃.

More next week!

Toby Gallagher completed 25 good deeds with GoodGym.

Toby has already done 25 good deeds with GoodGym. Instead of doing anything else, they've used their run to go and help people that need their help; digging, lifting, scraping, clearing, planting and weeding. Stuff that makes this a better place to be.

A ribbiting time at Urban escape

Bristol Report written by Alice Dalrymple

It was great to have a full group of Goodgymers at today's task with Urban escape, an amazing allotment space in the South of Bristol. After an obligatory moan about the hills we had ran, walked (or in my case) crawled up, we had an introduction to Youth moves and a tour of the site.

There was plenty of stuff to get involved with and the group divided and conquer to get the work done in the beautiful sunshine. Toby and Anna were busy pulling weeds and clearing an area to be tarped (technical term), Roz was removing grass from the path so it wouldn't disappear and Mel, Jenny and I were clearing underneath the hut to make the space more user friendly.

A particular highlight was having to move plastic tubs weighing 26kg into newly discovered store cupboard, unearthing slow worms and keeping a watchful eye on our new friend Freddo the frog. After a couple of hours we were rewarded with strawberries and blackcurrants before parting ways with the exciting prospect of a huge decline to start our journeys home!

There is plenty more to be done with Urban escape so watch this space for more tasks listed over the coming weeks.

A Scythe of Relief

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

It was great to have Fran, Ingrid and Jo join us for the first time tonight - welcome all! We had two tasks to spread our good deeds to. Mel had arranged a last minute trip to continue helping Hugh at the Southville Centre with their endless painting, and headed off with a group of walkers and out and back runners to cover the 3km round trip to the centre. As we were lucky not to have rain, they managed to continue with some outdoor painting to protect the wood in their grounds. Impressive work in the dark!

Meanwhile, the rest of the group split into Gary's Speedies and Shona's Sexies to get to the Northern Slopes. We were met by Julia and Caroline who got the group to work on continuing to clear a big area which is going to be used for planting new trees. With headtorches donned, the group chose their equipment of choice and got to work with scythes, loppers, shears, and even a Tree Popper and Steve's new favourite, The Slasher. There was also a bunch of rakers and shovelers moving all the newly chopped debris away from the area.

It's getting a little bit toasty over here

A second group got to work doing a litter-pick of the area, filling five bin bags and one recycling bag with waste. Top finds of the night included a toasty maker and hoover. We discussed the possibility of upcycling these (maybe or maybe not into presents), but opted to clear them away for Bristol Waste instead.

It was soon time to pack up, and we got treated to biscuits and tea from Julia, which was much appreciated on the cold hill! We headed back to town with some squats, sprints and chair holds. Once there, we presented the amazing Kait with her 200 Good Deeds t-shirt - massive well done Kait!! She had made some delicious peanut cookies so we feasted on those to celebrate and then a crowd went to Revolucion de Cuba for some more exotic feasting for March GoodGym Eats.

A Dennistration of Resiliance and Innitiative

Bristol Report written by Bristol runner

Storm Dennis was a rumbling but still the hardy GoodGymers sent brambles a tumbling.

The Northern Slopes are 4 green areas in southern Bristol that help to provide natural space and habitat for insects, plant life and animals in an urban environment. Although the council does a bit of work in the area it is not enough to keep the area diverse, under control and in a pleasant and useful enough state so that it does not get eaten up by further building developments. That's where the Northern Slopes Initiative comes in. Julia, our ever welcoming host, is from the NSI and showed us what had to be done in the wind and rain. We were handed scives, loppers and even tree poppers and set to work cutting back brambles and giving the place a neater cute than a newly opened Turkish Barber styling the hair of a professional footballer before their wedding day using a protractor and freshly sharpened scissors. Alright, maybe not that neat, but we did do more cutting back than a dieter on a budget. Apart from some minor scratches, one being on Russ' conk, we all came out relatively unscathed and enjoyed biscuits and hot beverages kindly provided by Julia after an hour of grafting. GoodGym spirit shone through again as when the flask of hot water was empty, and some folks still had no brew, those who did shared theirs so all were warmed by not only tea but the kindness of others. And that is bramble there was to it. Wetter not forget to dry out and warm up again now.
