Report written by Jack Concanon

An exciting but cold start to the year, Goodgym Richmond's group runs are back!

We met outside our favourite pub, unfortunately not for a drink but to get started on our Monday group run. We were lucky to be joined by two new faces to Goodgym - Jack and Kerry, give them a cheer! The run was a beautiful 3km route on the Thames path towards Ham House, it was quite eerie in the dark with the fog rolling along the river, the head torches were essential.

Ken was waiting for us on the path and guided us towards our tasks, one group would be tree felling and another group would be cutting back brambles. I'm not sure if it was over confidence or a desire to keep warm but the tree felling team tackled everything, cutting down even the largest trees by hand. JP even got chance to practice his caber throwing.

Trees chopped and brambles tackled we headed home in various directions with everyone looking forward to the next group run.

It's good to be back.

Preparing a Hedgerow with Petersham Common Conservators, Thames Landscape Strategy and the National Trust

Mon 17 Jan 18:45 pm
Tap Tavern, Princes Street, Richmond, TW9 1ED
Supporting the conservation of the local landscape

We will meet Ken from the Petersham Common Conservators to start the prep work to lay a hedgerow along Petersham Meadows (near Petersham Common) by the Eileen’s Café in Buccleuch Gardens along the towpath. This is a project that Ken is running with the Thames Landscape Strategy and the National Trust. We will be preparing the area for the hedgerow to be laid formally.

Jack and Sam will be leading the run from The Tap Tavern in Richmond (TW9 1ED) at 6:45pm where we have access to a secure locked bag drop. Jack will lead us in a 3-4km run to the Hedgerow meeting point which is the boardwalk to Ham House near the ferry.,-0.3145622,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x48760c6f1d2deabd:0xe20f1899c5fc45db!8m2!3d51.44423!4d-0.314074

On the evening we will be doing some tree felling and bramble clearance. Ultimately we want to make the hedgerow look something like the main photo (it is not currently in the best of conditions). This photo was when the hedgerow was originally laid in 2009 and it desperately needs to be done again.

Any support will be greatly appreciated by all involved!

It will be dark so if you have a headtorch, we'd recommend bringing it along. Whilst tools will be provided, please do bring your own workgloves.

Sam (Area Activator) will be available for any document checks if you're looking to get yoru checks done.
