Weeding & Writing

Tue 16 Nov
Report written by Yianny

🏃 14 Intrepid runners braved the slick streets and traffic of Brixton to rescue the 50 meter long planters at Jubilee Primary School from weeds.

Pre-run briefing was delivered by Katie on the lifecycle of mushrooms that she picked up on last Saturday's Community Mission https://www.goodgym.org/reports/well-wasn-t-that-fun-guys

In one patch, once the weeds were cleared, a trove of rock hard potatoes (or possibly large pebbles were unearthed) alongside plastic gardening tools, many pencils, a tennis ball and a small chalk board. These rescued items will be put back to good use!

After 30 solid minutes of work ten black bags stuffed with garden waste were disposed of while part of the group did a quick fitness blast. 🏋

Special shout out to Kaz for daring to go where no one had gone before with his clearing of the outer boundaries and to Jessie who just hit the milestone of 25 Good Deeds !!

A big thank you to Juan at Jubilee Primary School for equipping us - we will be back to help scrape the old rubber ff the tarmac in the playground 💪 !

Helping out at Jubilee Primary School

Tue 16 Nov 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
YIANNY'S FIRST GROUP RUN

Jubilee Primary is a delightful school on the way to Tulse Hill. Juan always has a big mixture of jobs for us to do so check back here nearer the time for specific tasks!

Yianny (GoodGym Lambeth's new Area Activator) will be leading the session so make sure you turn up to welcome him to the gang!

It's a 2km run but we'll have a longer option for those that fancy it.

New to GG Lambeth? We're a super friendly group who meet at Papa's Park near Brixton Station at 7pm on Tuesdays. We run to a local organisation, do a physical task for them and run back by 8:30. You can leave things in Papa's Cafe where there's a loo too! Email me if you've got any questions??

On Your MARKs... Get Set... Gone.

Tue 9 Nov
Report written by Mark Gilyead

I don't know if a self indulgent pun is allowed but Sarah suggested it so I'm going with it.

Tonight was my last Group Run as Lambeth AA, which was kinda sad but also exciting, because the awesome Yianny is taking over! 🎆💥🎉

We had THREE good deeds to get done and I can confirm they were completed. ✅ ✅ ✅

But first... we met at PAPA's, welcomed Yianny and also Kaz here for his first Lambeth group run! We had a quick warm up outside and then split into 3 groups:

📬Aislin and Nathan took a group to finish off a task we had last week - flyering for the fab GROAD who take donated clothes, housewares and furniture and give it out as part of their refugee and homelessness projects.

🍂Sarah had a small group who were bagging up leaves at PAPA's - they included a little loop of the block to keep warm too!

🍂And the rest of us ran 2k to Brixton Road Youth & Community Centre to also bag leaves - and thank goodness there were 17 of us because there were a hell of a lot of leaves... The bags that Sharron had bought were mostly quite small... but that did wonders for our self esteem as we filled twice as many as we normally would! (Seriously - see pic of Issy & bags). After half an hour we headed back with a few press ups, tricep dips, a wall sit and some squats on the way!

When we got back, we did a few stretches and then it was cake time! Sarah had prepared a "Goodbye Mark" cupcake message 😊 and Nathan's carrot cake cupcakes were absolutely delicious 🤤🤤🤤🤤 Also shout out to Tim for an iiiiiiincredible card (and cheers everyone else for the messages!).

We then went round the corner for a beverage! 🍻 It reminded me what makes the Lambeth community so damn special. Everyone who rocks up from those on 2 good deeds to 200 (and beyond...) is so awesome and friendly and I will really miss our weekly hangs to do good.

BIG LOVE ❤️

-- said Mark to the whole Lambeth gang.

Triple Task Tuesday ✅✅✅

Tue 9 Nov 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
MARK'S LAST LAMBETH RUN

After a last minute cancellation, we have not one, but three opportunities to do good across Lambeth!

📬Our longer run option will be to post leaflets for the fab Get Rid Of & Donate - it'll be about 6k in total.

🍂 Brixton Road Youth Club have asked us for a hand bagging all the leaves once again! That's about 2k away.

🍂And Papa's Park have also asked if we can clear their leaves too! That shouldn't take too long, so this team will then join the others at Brixton Road.

Afterwards we'll head to the pub if anyone fancies it! 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻

No of-fence taken

Sat 6 Nov
Report written by Paulin Shek

On Saturday, six Goodgymmers went to help out at Thorlands Gardens. We divvied up the tools and split into two groups to work on different plots.

Sam, Ema and Rebecca continued buddleia bashing in the forest garden.

Paulin, Jessie and Nathan started clearing a new section of the kitchen garden, starting with a fence which was only held in place with bindweed!

A wheely good Saturday morning

Sat 6 Nov
Report written by Sarah Beck

This was the second attempt of a community mission at Moorlands as it was rained off last Sunday. And we welcomed Kaz to his first Goodgym activity 🙌🙌 The garden has been a bit neglected the last few years so this was our first visit and we will probably come back for more. A big pile of mulch was outside on the car park and our job was to move it inside and spread over the paths. There were 2 wheelbarrows, a shovel, some forks and a rake so we divided the jobs between us and after an hour it was spread nicely over the paths. Rebecca and Nathan were heading to Southwark for another community mission but first we all went for a coffee in Brixton Market and discussed the cakes we will be baking for Tuesday's group run 🧁

Spreading Woodchip and Cutting Back Bushes @ Moorlands Gardens

Sat 6 Nov 10:00 am
Eaton Drive, London, SW9 8QP
Create a lovely space at this secret garden

Moorlands Gardens is an awesome little community space where local residents can help grow fruit and veg and we've been asked for a hand with a few jobs:

  • They've got a big pile of woodchip in the carpark next door which needs spreading onto the paths

  • Some of the blackberry bushes are a bit overgrown and need trimming back

  • There's also some bindweed to pull up if there's time (satisfying... ☺️) and potentially some weed suppressor roll to lay down.

We'll be meeting Sylvia who will show us what to do :)

Please bring gardening gloves!

Moorlands Gardens is at the end of Eaton Drive here.
