Its Not Heavy, When You're Working at The Bevy!

Tue 14 Jun
Report written by Brighton runner

Thank you to Jason for the ah-mazing pun!

It is always a pleasure to visit Warren and Dave at the Bevy - the community owned pub who support all in the local area. From activities for unadvantaged children during the school holidays and ensuring a hot meal and social company for the senior members of the community. The pub is not typically open on a Tuesday, but there were loads of locals enjoying a cool one on this hot evening.

With the weather recently being wet and warm the garden had become very lush and that included the weeds across the paths and an explosion of bindweed EVERYWHERE! Dave asked us to tackle the pathways so it could actually be seen! He kept a watchful eye as we worked our way up the winding path of the stepped garden keep the endless amounts of bindweed separate from the other green waste. Rachael and Philippa made sure there was plenty of room in the garden waste bin by packing it down.

Time flies when you're having fun and we ended up staying at The Bevy a little longer than expected and didn't quite get time for our core inspired work out. For anyone who want to give it a go check out this core work out for runners: Core Exercises

Trail Run and Pub!

Sun 12 Jun

Now the weather is getting warmer we thought it might be nice to doe some trail running and combine it with a trip to a pub for a social and some food. Meet next to the racecourse at 12 noon, then we'll run over the Downs to The Juggs in Kingston. It's an undulating 8km route with gravel paths, great views, and a steep downhill section at the very end. We'll bus home after (and folk are welcome to bus there too if preferred). Bus number 123 stops outside the pub, or it's a 20 min walk to catch the 28/29. Hopefully see some of you there! 😎

Can we dig it?!

Tue 7 Jun
Report written by Brighton runner

Hopefully I can be forgiven for using a classic pun...?

This week we ventured closer to the town centre by taking a leisurely jog to our beloved Sloane Court where we were met by gardening enthusiast Tony, a resident of the mature accommodation. He introduced us to new resident, James who used to garden at Stamner park where courses in horticulture are taught!

Rebecca and Katharine concentrated in the front gardens with weeding and digging out a bed ready for rose bushes to be planted later in the week. Tony was extremely pleased at how much was done and suggested a let the two of them off the fitness (no such luck)!

The rest of us followed James to the back gardens to thin out a walled shrubbery and get the better of some grass bushes. Philippa and Jason wrestled with one bush but were a victorious tag team! There was much cutting back and weeding accomplished, but with the wet and sunny weather recently there is still much to do! We promised James and Tony we will be back soon.

Some of us will be running the events in the Brighton Trial Marathon on Sunday 26th June with a course that includes a bit of hill climbing. So we set up in Queens Park to do some exercises to build our quads and glutes to make those hills (a little bit) easier.

Hopefully we'll be seeing some of you for a trail run and roast lunch on Sunday, please check out the running listings to sign up!

It's Ta-ra for now!

Tue 31 May
Report written by Tara Shanahan

So tonight…we met, we ran, we weeded, we snipped, we raked, we chatted, we cleared an entire allotment so it can now be rented out to somebody, we ran again, we did a fitness session, we went to the pub and WE MADE A DIFFERENCE.

It’s hard to know exactly what difference tonight’s task will make. I imagine the future allotment holder of the space we cleared, all the experiences they will have in that space, the friends they will make, the food they will grow, the knowledge they will acquire and share, the difference it will make to their health and wellbeing. Tonight we didn’t change the world but we will change somebody’s world, for the better, for the good.

And that’s what Goodgym does, it makes lots of little differences. The coached runners who take time out of their week to visit somebody elderly and isolated and make a huge difference to that person’s day and their sense of connection to the world. The Missions where the smallest, easiest of tasks for us can really impact the practicalities of somebody’s life and let that person know that there are people that care and are willing to help. And there are very few parts of our city that I can visit and not have a memory of how our group runs and community missions have made a difference to tidying, improving and caring for our little corner of the world and the people who live here.

Congratulations go to Katharine who tonight made a difference for the 100th time, joining several others present tonight in the 100 club.

We make lots of little differences to other people and places and of course also to ourselves. We support and encourage each other to keep active and to stay healthy. We’ve discovered training partners (and romantic partners) and friends amongst each other and I honestly believe there is no gym that can claim to be more welcoming and less intimidating than Goodgym. We are a community of lovely people who believe in the power of Good, that caring and taking action is worthwhile and really does MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

On a personal note Goodgym has made a huge difference to my life. I’m not a person who naturally steps into a leadership role but Goodgym has taught me that I can be a leader and has increased my self confidence. Goodgym has shown me a side of my city that I was entirely unaware of for the first 19 years I lived here. Now I know about all the great, caring people that are involved in so many community projects, like The Bevy, Brighton Table Tennis Club, Real Junk Food Project and so many more. I think most of all Goodgym reminds me that even in a world that can sometimes seem like its gone a bit mad and bad, that good people exist and I believe will prevail. As I said in my very brief farewell speech tonight ‘thank you all for being the antidote to all the sh** in the world!!’

Thank you so much to Helena who is leading group runs for the next few weeks. There are many more task owners who I know would welcome a visit in late June and July so if any of you want to do Task Force training to lead Community Missions, especially until the new Area Activator is recruited then please know that I am happy to help to facilitate this and don’t hesitate to get in touch.

I wish whoever takes Brighton Goodgym into the next phase all the best and I am excited to see where it goes and also to be a part of that journey. It really is just Ta-ra for now, see you all back out there soon xxxx

The Queen's Jubileaves

Tue 17 May
Report written by Tara Shanahan

Preparations across the land are in full swing for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Hove is no exception.

Palmiera Square are having a Big Lunch event to celebrate this historic occasion, including live music, kids play areas and a whole lot more. And of course local residents are keen for the square to be looking its best.

So tonight after a balmy day with thundery rain threatening we did our best to sweep up as many leaves and elm samaras as the strong wind would allow.

Resident Stuart’s dog Scampi entertained by chasing the leaves as we swept them.

We ended the evening with a pairs fitness session, with one holding a position whilst the other worked e.g squat.hold/ squats, boat hold/sit ups etc. and just as we were finishing the skies opened the rain came down and I legged it round the corner back to my flat!

Hope you all didn’t get too wet on the way home!
