Grab and grow

Sun 13 Jun
Report written by Beth Hoskins

On a super sunny Sunday myself, Sally and Nina headed over to Parkview to help Catherine set up a plant giveaway for local residents. We started by filling up buckets of compost and then did our best to identify which plants were which to lay them out on a table. Plenty of people came by to collect plants for their balconies so the estate should be filled with colourful plants and home-grown veg soon.

Another Flick Off The Wall

Fri 11 Jun
Report written by John Shirley

Once again we gathered at John Scurr Primary School on a Friday night, and as ever, everything was organised perfectly and caretaker Ray was there to greet us.

Our main task was to scrape white paint off a wall - I'm pleased to say it wasn't the same wall we painted white just a few weeks ago.

There was much conversation; mainly we discussed Germany's health system, as you do. It was certainly more interesting than watching paint dry. In fact, scraping paint off a wall is also more interesting than watching paint dry. The skill is to find the low-hanging fruit of paint-scraping-off: i.e. the loose, flaky bits.

At the end, the debris beneath our feet provided evidence of our work. Everyone removed their protective goggles, except me, I wear mine all the time.

Meanwhile, Martin set to work removing blue paint from a wall and pipe. When asked how it looked afterwards, he said "much the same as before". Many an untrue word is spoken in jest...

Helping Ray with outdoor tasks at John Scurr Primary School

Fri 11 Jun 18:00 pm
John Scurr Primary School (Cleveland Way entrance), 25 Cleveland Way, London, E1 4TZ
We're heading back to see Ray (and this time it's been confirmed...)

Join the team on the third week at John Scurr Primary School!

After an 'Area Activator error' on our last attempt, this evening Ray will be ready and waiting for us to continue outdoor painting maybe getting stuck in to some urgent clearing.

What you will be doing

  • Tasks this evening will include painting the basketball court and other walls, sanding down some edges of the building and clearing jobs.

Please note: while it's a good idea to wear your old clothes,Ray covers everything when it comes to goggles, gloves and disposable overalls!

  • If you fancy writing a run report, you can pop your pics, pun and activity details online after the task!

Where we will be meeting

  • We will meet at 6pm at the Cleveland Way entrance to the school (there is a Tesco Express a few doors down on the corner of Mile End Road).

Need to cancel?

  • Life happens and sometimes you can't make it after all. We just ask that you un-sign with as much notice as possible, to allow someone else to take your place (the school need all eight pairs of hands).

Nina has done a 6 month mission streak. Thu 3 Jun 2021

Nina just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give Nina a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.

Boardroom Antics

Thu 3 Jun
Report written by Emma Rapley

A full house of GoodGym-ers attended Stepney City Farm under the guidance of Siobhan with Emma and Paula leading the task.

Everyone pulled their socks up and got stuck in.

Stephen and Eva battled it out with their puntics and came up with some absolute gems...

Great big wooden boards were loaded on trolleys and laid against the pig enclosure whilst Mars admired/instructed from his side of the fence, an absolutely enormous pile of wood chips was shovelled and used to cover a veritable hedge of nettles just in front of the pig couple, huge great chunks of wood were picked up and piled up nearby. Siobhan seemed happy and exclaimed that she thought it would take a week, but with GoodGym helping out it was done in an hour and a half!

Aziz turned up not wearing his GG shirt because he likes to “be different” but Sara, Joanne and Eva followed suit.

I was particularly impressed with John this evening- I mean he worked hard (and he always does) - because he exemplified magnificent colour coordination and wore lilac purple shorts and purple gloves.

Emma wore Birkenstocks and jeans. She probably won’t do it again.

Rohan remarked that everyone and everything was “just marvellous, wonderful” and he had a cracking time, as did we all.

Welcome to Sara for her first ever session.

Thanks to everyone for turning up, working hard and making the time so enjoyable.

Seven of us went to the Half Moon pub afterwards and were led by Stephen our current Social Club Grand Master Pro.

I’ll leave you with this pearl from Eva: “ How much woodchip can a GoodGymer shift if a GoodGymer could shift wood chip?”
