Tree Planting in Bubbenhall with Protect Earth

Sun 12 Dec 12:30 pm
Warwickshire Lavendar Farm, Watery Lane, Bubbenhall, CV8 3BQ
You'll help clean the air and bring back some of the habitat lost by construction projects in the area.

Protect Earth would like some help planting 2,500 saplings at Warwickshire Lavender Farm in Bubbenhall. 1,000 of them will be used to create an acre of native British woodland, then another 1,500 shrub and tree species will make up a hedgerow to act as a natural corridor for wildlife all around the farm.

You don't need to know how to plant a tree, Protect Earth will teach you. You can bring gloves and a spade if you want, otherwise they'll have some spares for you, and there's lots of other jobs to do like laying mulch mats.

Scan we do it? Yes we scan!

Sat 4 Dec
Report written by Katherine Mills

Members of Warwick and Leamington Spa GoodGym were supporting at Leamington Spa parkrun this morning, braving the cold to scan runners' barcodes.

It was the first time the winter course had been used since before COVID, so runners were racking their brains to try and remember the route, but everyone managed to find their way to the finish line to have their barcodes scanned and record their time.

Looking forward to doing it all again at Warwick Racecourse Parkrun on 1st January! Sign up here

Express delivery

Wed 1 Dec
Report written by Katherine Mills

4 members of GoodGym Warwick and Leamington Spa made light work of delivering 200 Christmas cards for Holy Trinity Church, informing local residents of upcoming events within the community over the festive period.

After a short jog from Jephson Gardens the group split into pairs to deliver cards along each side of the three roads that we had been asked to cover. We admired the few Christmas trees that residents had already put up in their windows. Once all the cards were delivered, we headed back along the parade to admire the Christmas and Diwali lights in all their splendour.

It was great to have James along to the run and Allan was always easy to spot in the dark with his blue trainer lights.

Looking forward to getting back into the swing of regular group runs in the new year!

We had a won-deer-ful time with santa-stic weather at Warwick Reindeer Run

Sun 28 Nov
Report written by Katherine Mills

4 Goodgymers supported Raceways in aid of Marathon Kids at Warwick Racecourse this morning for their reindeer 2.5k and 7k races followed by the kids 1km fun run.

Not to be outdone by the runners, we donned our reindeer outfits along with high vis marshall jackets. Jackie took marshalling reindeer to the next level with her authentic reindeer herder hat. Lil, Jackie and Nigel took their positions at strategic points around the course and after a much needed warm up run by Katherine - the herd was off!

Tails bobbing, lots of cheering and 3 laps of the course later, runners were presented with water, a mince pie and a medal. It was then a quick change of positions ready for marshalling the kids fun run which ran directly afterwards.

The event was a huge success with everyone having a big smile on their face as they crossed the finish line. Let's hope we can help to support this event again in the future - well, it would be Rudolph us not to!

Swapping leafleting for a leafy run

Wed 24 Nov
Report written by Katherine Mills

After a last minute cancellation for tonight's Community Mission, 3 GoodGymers still dug out their high vis and head torches to complete an evening run. We chatted about Allan's upcoming race at the Coombe 8 on Sunday and what costumes we will be wearing when supporting at the Reindeer Run on the same day. It was great to get outdoors in the fresh air and enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves (even in the dark!)

Supporting/marshalling at Warwick Reindeer Run

Sun 28 Nov 09:00 am
Warwick Racecourse, Hampton Street, Warwick, CV34 6HN
Get into the festive spirit by cheering on runners and marshalling the course

We have been asked by Raceways if we can provide some volunteers to support at their upcoming Reindeer Run at Warwick Racecourse. This is a fun run with 7km and 2.5km distance options where everyone dresses in a reindeer costume!

Jobs will involve marshalling around the course (including a good dose of cheering and Christmas songs), assisting with registration before the race and manning a water station. Christmas-themed accessories are optional but encouraged :-)

The run starts at 10am so they have asked if volunteers can arrive by 9am and they expect everything to be finished by 11am.

You can either meet us at the racecourse, or there is an optional social run.

For those meeting at the task event HQ is located at the southern end of Warwick racecourse, the Paddock Entrance (adjacent to the St Marys Area 2 car park).

Alternatively you can meet us at St Nicks for a 1 mile run to the start, a 1 mile run back and then a social run around the park afterwards if we have any energy left after all that cheering!

We need to let Raceways know how many people can help out by the end of next week, so please sign up by midday on Friday 19th November.

Jephson Gardens, Newbold Terrace, Leamington Spa, CV32 4AA

Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.

Providing local residents with information about events in the community

Welcome to GoodGym Warwick and Leamington Spa! We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet regularly to get active and do a physical task to help the charities, community organisations and projects in our area.

The Task:

Delivering Christmas cards for Holy Trinity Church - providing local residents with information about events going on in the community.

It will be dark, so make sure you wear bright/reflective clothing where possible and bring a headtorch if you have one.

The Run/walk:

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is often possible to walk to the task if you would prefer. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

Active Advent Challenge

Sat 25 Dec 00:00 am
Mulitple locations, Warwick and Leamington Spa, ?
Challenge yourself to completing 25 minutes of activity for 25 days over Advent

December can be a hectic time of year when our best intentions for exercise go out the window until the new year. Why not make time for yourself, practise some self care and help burn off those mince pies this year by signing up to the Active Advent Challenge.

The challenge is to complete 25 minutes of activity, every day for 25 days.

This might be going for a run, cycling to work, having a walk in your lunch break, doing some strength work in the gym or feeling more zen with some yoga or Pilates.

We all know sometimes it's just not possible to fit in an exercise session every day and rest days are important to give our bodies time to recover. Therefore minutes can be carried over to later days or from earlier days in the week, but we're aiming for an average daily minutes total of 25 minutes per day per week.

Below is an example to explain how it works: Monday - 20 min cycle to and from work (40 mins in total) Tuesday - 15 min walk Wednesday - 30 min run Thursday - 60 mins yoga Friday - rest day Saturday - 25 min run Sunday - 60 min bike ride

Average over the week=33 mins per day so you've achieved the 25 min per day target for that week!

You can download a sheet to record your minutes per day (there is a PDF version that you can download and print, or if you prefer there is a spreadsheet that will calculate your weekly average minutes for you). https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hmzfNn6g7eL_KljWK-pjU8e-_u7E-sSR?usp=sharing

Don't forget to send me photos from your activities that we can share with the group and if you're signed up to Strava you can record certain activities such as running or walking on there too.

I will be setting up some training sessions throughout the period to help you achieve this goal with the grand finale being Christmas Day Parkrun!
