Please note that this training session has been cancelled.

It's good to run with friends!

I would love for you to join me for a slow paced social run starting and ending at the Braywick nature reserve - there will be a mixture of roads and some of the parkrun route. Please bring a headtorch or chest torch as it will be dark. No-one will be left behind; if anyone needs to take a break to walk there will always be at least 2 people at the back.

Run, Walk and Cyclamen

Wed 6 Oct
Report written by Amy Lovell

Well done to everyone who came along this evening!

Nicola and Georgeta joined me for a 3.5km run to the task, looping into Braywick Park just long enough to breathe in some fresh air and appreciate some beautiful big skies before heading along the tow path through town and beyond to St Luke's Primary School.

There we met Nivi and Juli, who had both opted to walk to the task from home. It was great to see Nivi sporting her new red GG t-shirt as she returned for her third GoodGym session, and to see Juli showing off the black t-shirt she earned this Summer.

Top of the to do list for this evening was filling a large new planter with compost and planting it up with box, cyclamen, pansies and osteospermum. Nivi and Georgeta tackled this with great skill, whilst Juli, Nicola and I pulled weeds out of the rest of the planters and topped them up with compost, then collected up leaves and litter.

Job done, we had time for a fun workout, using resistance bands for added oomph. Then we took a few photos (do you like our superhero pose?) and headed off. Well done to Georgeta and Nicola, who joined me for a 1.5km jog back to our earlier meeting point, where we stretched before saying our goodbyes.

Planting, weeding and more at St Luke's

Wed 6 Oct 18:30 pm
Homebase Car Park, Stafferton Way, Maidenhead, SL6 1AY
Help spruce up the grounds at this local primary school

Autumn is here, and that means its time to go back to school. Note the 6.30pm start time for this session - 15 minutes earlier than our usual Wednesday slot.

For this group run (or walk!) we meet in the car park by Homebase, where we will warm up and have a quick briefing. Runners and walkers will then set off in the direction of the school. Runners will take a slightly longer 4km route including a little loop into the Braywick Nature Reserve, whilst walkers will cover closer to 2km.

Our task owner Jon will meet us at the school and set us up with tasks including filling a new planter, weeding and other grounds maintenance. Once we've blitzed this, we'll have a play in the playground (aka the fitness session!) and then head back to to (Home)base via the most direct route. There we will stretch and say our goodbyes.

Remember everyone is welcome at GoodGym. Whether you're Mo Farah or you're only just starting out on your fitness journey, we would love to meet you. There are options to run or walk and some of our runners will have walking breaks too. We also always have experienced GoodGym members back marking so that no one gets left behind.

Has beans and high stakes at the Community Allotment

Wed 29 Sep
Report written by Amy Lovell

This evening's group run took us back to the Maidenhead Community Allotment - a place that's bean close to our (lettuce or celery?) hearts ever since we visited on our GoodGym launch event in February 2020.

We met at the Pinkney's Green Cricket Club under a pink sky, with a chill in the air giving us pink cheeks. We made the most of the last of the daylight with a chatty 3km run/bike ride on scenic National Trust paths. Extra kudos to Kanika for going the distance as this was her first run in years - great effort! Also well done to Amanda, who ran the Windsor Half on the weekend, but was still full of beans.

On arrival at the allotment we armed ourselves with torches and shared task owner Sue's lovely clear instructions for the evening. Our first job was removing the (has) beans and their frames. This took no time at all, so bean there done that, half the group worked berry hard to plant some raspberry canes, while the other half got hammered and went to bed...

I mean got hammers and went to work on fixing edging planks in place along the rear of the long bed. For stakes we used sticks that Sue had carefully prepared for us. Some sticks sunk in very obligingly whilst others were real stick in the muds. Jess has a broken thumb so she had the important job of inspecting our work and giving us all lots of stick(s). Enthusiastic hammering put everyone else's thumbs at risk too, but despite the high stakes, we got away with more green fingers than purple thumbs.

Having completed our to do list, we moved on from hitting hammers to HIIT... Our 8 minute fitness session included lots of jumping (beans!?), squats, lunges, and some mean press-ups and tricep dips. Warm and buzzing with endorphins, it was time to head for home. Some of the group ran 2km back to the Cricket Club, whilst others peeled off on their own roots (I know, I didn't see any carrots this evening either, but there must have been some there somewhere!)

Well done everyone - allotta Good done this evening! Or should that be Gourd....?

Allotta fun at Maidenhead Community Allotment

Wed 29 Sep 18:45 pm
National Trust car park next to Pinkneys Green Cricket Club, Pinkneys , Maidenhead, SL6 5DS
Run or walk and support this wonderful local resource with some weeding and digging

This evening we are heading back to the location of our first ever group run, the Maidenhead Community Allotment. There is always plenty to do here: digging, weeding, watering...if you're lucky you might even get to snack on a freshly picked raspberry or fig!

We'll meet at the Pinkney's Green NT Car Park next to the cricket club for a briefing and warm up. Then walkers will take the more direct 1.5km route to the allotment, whilst the runners will head off road, taking in 3.5km of the lovely Pinkney's Green and Thicket Meadow. Do bring your torches as it is going to be dark! If you're new to GoodGym and worried about whether you'll be able to keep up, worry not. All fitness levels are welcome and we always have a back marker so that no one gets left behind. This is a social run, walk or even run and walk. It is not a race.

At the allotment we'll make ourselves useful and have a good natter for 40 minutes or so,. Do bring your gardening gloves! Then we'll warm up again with a fun fitness session before heading back to our start location via the more direct route for some stretches and to see everyone off safely.

The pick of the litter

Wed 22 Sep
Report written by Amy Lovell

Well done to Georgeta, Sophie, Nicola and Juli, who joined me for this evening's group run and litter pick.

We met up at the Town Hall and started the evening with a warm up jog and some dynamic stretches around the amphi-theatre. Then we headed off for our run, a 4km loop out into the lovely Braywick Nature Reserve and then back into town just as we lost the light. We then collected our litter picking kit from my car and hit the town.

We focussed on the High Street, St Ives Road, the Amphitheatre, Providence Place and West Street. This was a bit of an experiment to see whether the town centre was in need of more TLC from GoodGym and we are pleased to report that the High Street was pretty clean. We did find that a few people had abandoned their takeaways at the Amphitheatre though, and there was also lots of rubbish along West Street, where some of the high street shops have their loading bays and bins.

At the end we attracted some funny looks while we did our stretches, then bundled everything we had collected into 1 big bag, which I took home to put in my bin.

Well done on another great effort team!

Litter Pick Maidenhead

Wed 22 Sep 18:45 pm
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Town Hall, Maidenhead, SL6 1RF
Help make the town spick and span

The evenings are drawing in, but that won't stop us getting out, getting fit and doing good deeds!

This evening's run or walk starts at the Braywick Leisure Centre and takes in the Braywick Nature Reserve and Green Way path into the town centre. All paces of runners and walkers are welcome and we will have a back marker to make sure no one is left behind. The run will be approximately 4km and the walk 2km.

In the town centre we will hunt for litter, and also chat to each other and generally have a lovely sociable time. We will also have a fitness session in the amphitheatre, so be read for some squats, planks and other healthy, fun stuff.

If you have your own litter picking kit then please do bring it along. Otherwise there will be kit available.

We will finish the session with a run or walk back to our start location and some stretches. By this point it will be very dark, so please do bring a torch! If you're not used to running in the dark it can be a bit daunting at first, but with lights and safety in numbers we make sure everyone is safe.

Please sign up below and if you are up for helping out by back marking, walk leading, writing the run report or taking photos then please do add that on. Looking forward to seeing you all!
