Someone like pew

Tue 16 Nov
Report written by Michael

Tonight saw 13 goodgymers in Cardiff meet in the dark night ready to hit the streets for a nice 5km.

Our task, to help out with the Forget me not cafe and support group who meet at St. Edward's Church in Roath utilising their community space. This is the first time that they have been back, meeting in person for a long time due to the pandemic so we were eager to jump in and help out in any way that we could.

But before we head off on our active travel for the evening, we have a celebration or TWO......

It's the 50th mission for Alice and Adam

Well done both

Off we go, it was a lovely night for an exercise across the city and not too long before we arrived at our destination. Kathie was there to tell us all about it and how much fun they had seeing each other again at forget me not, and explain our tasks tonight;

  • Sweep the hall
  • Vacuum the carpets
  • Put the chairs back

We got the tasks completed nice and quick, giving us a bit more time to enjoy some chocolate and biscuits to fuel us ready for the return trip. The runners and walk / jog groups set off in different directions but with the same end in sight.

Everyone was very happy to get back after a good evening of volunteering, and in time to watch the Wales football match to boot. Well, isn't that good timing!

Cleaning the Hall and replacing the chairs.

Tue 16 Nov 18:15 pm
Blackweir Tavern, 35 North Road, Cardiff , CF10 3DX
Support the return of 'Forget me Not' cafe

Forget me not cafe are finally meeting again at St. Edward Community Hall and so we are also returning to help them, this will be there 'in person' meeting in the hall so we will be making our way over to help put things back all clean and tidy.

We will be mopping, vacuuming and having a workout moving the chairs back into position.

If it's not raining and there are enough of us, some could even get back outside and attack the buddleia to finish that task from last time.

Hit the lanes - Bowling Night

Fri 29 Oct

We will be hitting Superbowl at the Principality Stadium, we will need to know in advance how many people are coming so that we can make the booking.

Michael will sort this out, it's £7.80 for one game or £12.50 for two games, but this can be sorted out once we know how many people are coming.

As we will be in town for this, we will more than likely go out for a few drinks afterwards - the train station is nice and close so you can leave your cars at home and have yourselves a good ol' party.

We've Only Just Price Gun

Tue 26 Oct
Report written by Michael

Tonight, there were ten of us for Tenovus.........

Meeting back at Sport Wales once again in Sophia gardens, it was a slightly drizzly start to our evening, we all chatted whilst waiting for everyone to arrive and then made our way into the dark night.

Thankfully the rain stopped as we started, at last a dry Tuesday run. We made our way through the City Centre and already you could begin to see the set up for the Winter markets, we talked about our bowling night this coming Friday and other socials that we could set up.

  • Fireworks
  • Ice Skating in the Castle grounds
  • Our yearly Xmas Party (fingers crossed)

Keep your eyes peeled for them on the website!

We suddenly found ourselves at a very strange set of lights, with the green crossing light somehow turned around to face the cars so we could no longer see when it was green. We managed to safely cross the road and got to the Tenovus shop dead on time to start our tasks for the evening.

Carl met us, as usual with a smile.......I say as usual, this is the first return since pre-pandemic, so it was wonderful to finally be back again. We said our 'Hi hi's' and it was time to get to work, splitting into teams and off we went.

  • Pricing and sorting the DVD's
  • Tagging, sizing and hanging donated clothes
  • Steaming clothes in the hanging area
  • Pricing puzzles
  • Dressing three mannequins

Andrew, Jamie and Martin went to work on the media.

Estelle, Hannah and Lydia hit the pile of clothes after a quick demonstration of the taggers and steamer.

Michelle and Sean made their way to puzzle corner and with puzzled looks began counting a 1000 piece jigsaw (unfortunately there were 3 pieces missing).

This left Su with her favourite job of the mannequin dressing.

30 minutes went by in the blink of an eye, in this time lots of clothes were steamed and ready to be priced in the morning. The DVD's had been completed and Martin was now helping Su with the remaining mannequin, after lots of arguments the puzzle had been counted and found to be missing pieces but we had managed a couple of smaller puzzles. A quick photo in the Halloween window and it was time to head back.`

The return to Tenovus

Tue 26 Oct 18:15 pm
Sport Wales National Centre, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, CF11 9SW
Keep the charity shop looking good, and support the charity.

Tenovus Cancer Care is a Welsh cancer charity that supports cancer patients and their families, funds cancer research and works to raise awareness of how to prevent cancer.

We will be volunteering in the shop on Clifton Street, it's been a very long time since we were here last. There may be some painting involved but we will confirm this soon.

Gwent League XC - Cardiff fixture

Sat 16 Oct

Gwent League XC is back. It will be great to get a Goodgym team competing in some if not all the fixtures this season.

First fixture is on our doorstep - Llandaff fields. You wont be able to miss it as it'll look like a festival has taken over. We hope to have a tent up with our flag so we'll be semi-easy to spot. Aiming to meet at around 12:30-12:45 so we can get set up and get the teams registered.

1:40pm - Females - 6.4k

2:50pm - Males - 9.6k

The cross country is a competitive race, but it's also highly enjoyable. If you don't want to race, come along and cheer and see what the XC is all about.

Friday Social run 5K

Fri 15 Oct

The half-marathon is behind us, but this does not mean that our Friday runs are over. Quite the opposite.

We aim to get together to run in a Good Gym Style (that is chat while keeping up with your teammates). We will run around Roath Park because it is well lit, there are many runners nearby so it is a great location for evening runs.

Bring high visibility jackets or lights anyway.

We expect to run around the Lake and back. That's around 5k. Because it is a social run, we will run it in 30 to 40 mins. Faster runners are very much welcome to show off their pace.
