Light nights in Lambeth town - it's Tuesday's Group run in Spring time !!
10 runners gathered at Papa's, our base in Brixton, for tonight's task and we were greeted with families and their children playing in the playground! Now that it is still light out it has a completely different feel heading out to evening tasks so we are looking forward to slightly higher temperatures to go with it.
Before the warm up we found out that tonight's group had quite eclectic tastes in cuisine with favourites including East Asian fare from Thailand, Korea & Japan, South Asian from India and environs, African from Ethiopia/Eritrea (an AA fave), Middle Eastern - Kurdish and European in the form of Italian. Sorry France you weren't invited....
It is a short run down to the Grantham Road surgery to meet Jonathan so we arrived early but luckily Maya had invited Liz a newbie GGer who happens to be a physical trainer. 8 agonising minutes later we were questioning our life choices but were certainly a bit fitter after calisthenics in the Car Park! (Thanks Liz!)
Jonathan took us round to Swan Mews where we were greeted by several huge platers and the task was to empty one of its' soil into a one tonne bag (filled + a wheelbarrow extra for good measure) and break apart an older planter to be recycled (challenge gleefully accepted with no tools - and a decent job done). Check out the pics and please note that Shauna did actually have a bit of help ;0)
Back to Papa's with us then and warm down time which saw a couple of local children also join in the fun!
Thanks to all!!

This week we head over to help the Lambeth GP Food Coop @ Swan Mews Garden in Stockwell. The garden is used by patients from Grantham surgery on Grantham Road but is situated a few minutes walk away in Stockwell opposite the tube.. It is used by patients and staff to learn how to grow vegetables and your help on Tuesday will enable us to create a wonderful environment for them. 💯
The job includes digging out soil from one or more planters and placing the soil into a large 1 tonne bag. There may be other smaller tasks for the group as well and we are definitely going to have fun while doing it ✅
If you have gardening gloves please bring them although we have several pairs if you don't and as this is a night task if you have a head torch please also bring that. 🧤
Join your fellow runners and make a difference locally while getting your fit on. 📢
On the coldest night of the year, we totally lucked out with a toasty indoor task, and a cracking one at that!
We met with frosty fingers and tingly toes outside our usual meeting place at the BAC, and it was interesting to see how we all feel the cold to very different degrees. While some of us were decked out in thermals and gloves, other brave souls had stuck to the shorts...brrr!
We did a warm up designed to fire up all those major muscle groups and get the blood pumping, and talked about our best tips to beat the Monday blues. Going for a run, dressing in your fave outfit, eating cheese and even taking a tot of scotch whiskey - take your pick!
Our run was a short one down to Providence House, a local youth centre which uses art and creativity to engage young people in the area. Our task tonight ranked as possibly one of the best ever. The kids are creating a giant jigsaw with messages of peace, and our job was to sand them all down ready for painting. The first step was to put the thing together - surprisingly even on a huge scale and helpfully numbered it was still a bit of a challenge.
Before long we all had a few pieces of jigsaw in our hands and were happily sanding away and getting gradually covered in pretty coloured dust and chatting to the lovely resident art therapist.
Reluctant to face the cold run back and with loads of energy left, the group split into two and set about either clearing leaves or sorting out the kitchen. Three tasks for the price of one! I do think the leaf clearers did have the raw end of the deal though, especially when we came into find that the indoor group had access to some very delicious looking cake - which they were kind enough to share in the end! Although it was just before the fitness session, which made for some very interesting comments during our core blast...
Next week we're helping out at a local school, and make sure you keep your diaries free for this year's bumper Christmas Wandsworth social - after missing it last year, we're going to make up for it on Monday 13th December after the run!
Providence House, a community youth centre that improves the lives of young people who come from the nearby Winstanley Estate in North Battersea. They aim to provide social, recreational, sporting and educational activities and provide a sense of community and identity for young people; offering an alternative to anti-social behaviour and social isolation.
They've asked us to come and help sand and prepare a huge jigsaw puzzle map for repainting. This will be an inside task, but please keep a safe distance. There will be nowhere to leave bags while we're out, but there will be a nice fitness session thrown in!
A bumper Tuesday for GG Lambeth runners with two tasks, runs heading off in opposite directions, an Area Activator in a boot/on crutches and hand torches running out of battery throughout the evening! 😖
In true Lambeth style two Task Force members stepped forward to lead the runs - shout out to Charlotte & Sarah - the Autumn classic collecting and bagging leaves at Brixton Road Youth Centre and making a start on GROAD moving their donations into a new storage unit. 💪
The sprinters headed off for the 1.5kms to Brixton Road where it has been 'raining leaves' and were able to clear a huge amount (see photos!) while the middle distance runners made the 3.5km journey (with a long hill climb) to West Norwood and were faced with a Herculean mountain of donations to move. 🚀
With some fantastic back marking everyone arrived back at base safely and in time to celebrate Michael's fantastic achievement of 150 Good Deeds while enjoying Rocky Road bites and vegan Blondies! (Thanks Charlotte & Tim) 😍
This week's closer task is a regular for the Autumn - Brixton Road Youth Centre has some huge trees and it's the time of year where they don't stop shedding their leaves...
We'll meet Sharron and Cathy who will prep us with bags and rakes and we'll blitz the outside of the building 💪
It's about a 2k run each way but we'll have a longer option for those that fancy it.
Please bring gardening gloves and a head torch if you have them! 🧤
Task 2 is to help our friends at GROAD with a internal move at their storage in Norwood - clearing three units into one. 🏋
New to GG Lambeth? We're a super friendly group who meet at Papa's Park near Brixton Station at 7pm on Tuesdays. We run to a local organisation, do a physical task for them and run back by 8:30. You can leave things in Papa's Cafe where there's a loo too! Email me if you've got any questions??
Our task for the evening yesterday was back at Doddington community roof garden, a space which has been transformed by volunteers from a multistory carpark into a thriving garden for local people. It's a regular one for us, but it is always fun to see the surprise on people's faces when they visit for the first time - hidden away in a Battersea estate, it's up an easily-missable flight of stairs which opens out into a huge maze of flower beds, herb gardens and composting areas.
It was a short run of just over a mile down to the garden, so we started off the night with a warm up and a quick poll on the little and large things we're doing to help protect the environment. There were some top tips, including riding your bike as much as possible to get places, reducing meat and cutting out single-use plastic, but also some very bright ideas like deleting spam and unsubscribing from email lists which both carry a carbon footprint. You're a clever bunch!
We were excited to welcome Jenni for her first GoodGym session, and to talk about her show, Endurance which sees her perform a feat of endurance, live and in real time at the BAC. She gave us a little talk on how she was inspired by female ultra runners and also about her project 'When we run, we become', where she will be running with other people. Running safely in public spaces is something that we've talked about a lot at GoodGym - if you would like to continue this important discussion, do reach out to Jenni. And don't forget, we have a lovely community at GG, if you ever want to go out for a run and don't feel comfortable by yourself, drop a message on our whatsapp group or send me an email and we'll find a way to run with you!
After a good steady pace down to Doddington we arrived to find Malissa, lead volunteer, waiting for us. She led us through the garden, pointing out interesting plants as we went (while I was trying not to think about how many expensive 'proper' plants I've pulled up over the years of GG tasks, thinking they were weeds...). She distributed shovels, brooms and trugs, and we soon got cracking on various jobs round the garden.
After 40 minutes of hard work, we were almost done for the evening. Apologies for the quality of the photos - I was told a couple of weeks ago that they look like I'm taking them out of a moving car, at night, in the middle of a storm.
All that was left was that tough little leg finisher. We gathered out in the lovely Doddingon square and started smashing through some lower body exercises designed not exclusively to inflict pain, but also strengthen all those important leg muscles and create quads of iron. Some excellent form there everyone!
After that mean old hill and a few stretches to finish off, it was time for a bite to eat and drinks round the corner. Look out for the GG Wandsworth Christmas social coming soon! Next week I'll be away so our group run will be replaced with a Monday night community mission, check out the details here. A final word to wish Caroline, long-term GG Wandsworth member, farewell and good luck for her move to Bristol - have a brilliant time there!
Run happy, run safe, GoodGym.
We have a great session planned at Doddington Roof garden tonight- a community space transformed from a multistory carpark into a thriving garden! We'll be shifting soil and other jobs, so get ready for a workout that really does some good.
Please bring a headtorch or other light if you have one as the area is not well lit.
Don't forget there is no bag drop or facilities at the BAC, so try and avoid bringing anything with you.
