One foot in Bel-grave

Tue 12 Oct
Report written by Huw Davies

Week 1 of our campaign to spread the word of road closures for residents living and working on the Leicester Half Marathon route on behalf of LOROS. It last rained last Tuesday night, at GoodGym o'clock. A completely dry week later and what do you know, 15 minutes before GoodGym o'clock back came the rain!

Luckily, it relented by the time we'd run to Belgrave Circle to begin our task, wet leaflets are infinitely trickier to force through letterboxes!

After Huw, remembering Jimmy's top leafleting tip from two years hence, thought he would share this knowledge with the group, Tracey and Gwyn outed themselves as serious leafletters unveiling their wooden spoons, used to push the leaflet through - absolute genius!

We split into teams tackling a street each, Dave and Mel, Huw & Steve, Tracey and Gwyn and the trio of Lindsay, Stu and Sunday's Manchester Marathon hero Jen. We fired the information through letterboxes in double quick time, running out of leaflets completely about 15 minutes short of our task time with several streets to go! Too quick for our own good!

Plenty more to do along Belgrave Road and through the city centre before race day - cracking work gang!

Just snipping to St Matthew's!

Tue 21 Sep
Report written by Huw Davies

A second visit in recent times to our friends at St Matthew's Big Local for part two of our task tidying up the hedges at the MUGA.

Runners Elena, Steve, Stu and Huw set off from DMU to meet up with Dave, Lindsay and Mel plus handyman John from St Matthew's Big Local. On arrival we found the work had already begun so we dived in armed with loppers and snippers and started trimming back the hedges protruding over the grassed area around the multi-use games area.

Once again it was great to see the site in full use with lots of young people getting active all around the site.

After a full on 45 minutes or so our work was complete leaving John with well into double figures of filled 100 litre bin bags to dispose of tomorrow. With the street side of the fence completed a few weeks back, we've now tidied up the interior of the site and it looks fantastic.

Top work gang!

Hedge trimming at the St Matthew's MUGA

Tue 21 Sep 17:45 pm
The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre , 50 Duns Lane , Leicester, LE3 5LX
Helping a local community project

Our friends at St Matthews Big Local have asked us to come back to the estate to help with some hedge cutting around the multi-use games area.

Tools will be provided (although if you have any loppers/secateurs you could bring that would be helpful) just bring some gloves if you can.

And the best bit about tasks here is they let us use the running track for our fitness session after the task - let's see if we still dominate the Strava segments around the track!

Dodging the fair

Tue 24 Aug
Report written by Huw Davies

As the Paralympics swung into action, we approached the last (but one) leg of our project to stain a 300m section of wooden sleepers along the towpath north of Abbey Park.

We were delighted to welcome Gwyn and Tracey (self styled as G&T!) along on tour from GoodGym Derby who both got stuck straight into both the painting and the chatting in true GoodGym style!

Mel and Lindsay had a mini litter pick to start with while Huw and Jen started attacking the overhanging vegetation before the four of them combined hedge cutting and wire brushing to clear the sleepers for the painting squad of Dave, Stu, Gwyn and Tracey.

Fantastic teamwork and progress and now one more visit will easily complete the job with just 25m of staining (and no prep work!) left to do.

Dave led the runners back via Abbey Park for their fitness work, dodging the Billy Bates Fun Fair and the highly reduced crowds as the school holidays come to a close!

Staining the wooden sleepers along the towpath between Belgrave Lock and Abbey Park

Tue 24 Aug 17:45 pm
The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre , 50 Duns Lane , Leicester, LE3 5LX
Creating a better environment

We'll meet at DMU Leisure Centre (we'll meet outside while the weather is good but we are good to use lockers etc if you need to leave anything there or get changed before we run) at 5.45pm, taking a leisurely run along the water to our task location at 6pm.

We need to do some clearing of overhanging greenery on the sleepers and more painting once cleared.

On the way back we'll have a quick fitness session in Abbey Park before returning to DMU for 7.30pm.

If you would like to walk/cycle to the task please contact huw@goodgym.org to arrange logistics.

Trim-endous

Tue 10 Aug
Report written by Huw Davies

The much loved combination this week of a task taking exactly the amount of time we had available for the amount of people who came along!

Dave, Mel, Lindsay, Stu and Huw rolled into St Matthew's to meet handyman John from the St Matthew's Big Local charity who look after various parts of the estate including the fantastic multi-use games area which was the scene of our task tonight.

Many of our previous tasks there have been in the depths of winter - cold, dark, wet and windy and usually resulting in us having the freedom to use the track for our fitness session. Tonight it was amazing to see the place in the middle of summer, heaving with young people getting active.

John quickly issued us with our tools and we set to work, cutting back the hedge that was bursting through the site fence out on to the pavement over a stretch of about 50 metres. No problem for team GG, we snipped, lopped and bagged about fifteen 90 litre heavy duty bin bags, loaded John's trailer with as much as we could and stored the remaining bags (hopefully) safely up against the inside of the fence for his subsequent trips to dispose of them!

Super work gang, a real difference made once again!

P-aint nobody, does it better

Tue 3 Aug
Report written by Huw Davies

More progress made on our never ending project painting the sleepers along the towpath for the Canal & River Trust.

Dave heroically stepped back in to his former role to lead the run due to Huw's MCL going kaput as the runners made their way up water once more past Abbey Park.

Once on site, Lindsay and Mel picked litter, Jen and Huw got stuck in clearing the overhanging vegetation from the sleepers allowing painters Stu and Rob to follow behind. Teamwork makes the dream work! Jen left our traditional graffiti this time with an Olympic theme.

Another 30 or so metres done, one big effort required to strip the vegetation and paint the remaining 50m in the coming weeks and this 300m section will be complete!

Great work team!
