Creating green spaces at the Women's Hospital

Mon 24 Jan 18:30 pm
‘’A case history’ by John King , Hope street , Liverpool , L1 9BQ
Improving the environment for patients, staff and visitors

Welcome to GoodGym Liverpool

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every Monday evening to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects across the Liverpool City Region.

Most Group Runs will be lead one of our fabulous volunteer qualified Run Leaders, but watch out for ones listed as 'Social Runs' as this means no Run Leader is present but we still go out and run together keeping our 'no one left beind' GoodGym vibe in place!

The Task

We'll be picking up from where we left of on our last visit to the Women's Hospital back in September. We'll be creating spaces around the trees to plant wild flowers.

The Run

We'll be meeting at the Suitcases on Hope Street for a warm up and a run (with walk option) to the task. What 3 Words meet up link

This one is also really good for those new to running or not yet ready for the longer runs. The task is less than a mile away from our meet up point on Hope Street, and the run will weave though the streets, with a stop off in Falkner Square Gardens for a brief fitness session before arriving at the Women's ready for the task, making it roughly 2k each way.

With the evenings still darker we advise you to dig out those hi viz clothes and head/chest torches if you have one! Run Safe.

If you prefer the walk option, or would rather meet us at the venue either leave a comment below or message Ema via our whatsapp group or email (ema@goodgym.org)

Helping out Bradbury Field's and other charities at a visually impaired peoples at a sports day

Sun 13 Feb 10:30 am
Greenbank Centre, Greenbank Lane, Liverpool, L17 1AG
It will improve the physical and mental health of people with sight impairment/loss

Bradbury Field's in association with organisations including, Thomas Pocklington Trust , VISPA, and the Merseyside Sight Loss Council are organising a sports day at The Greenbank Centre and have asked GoodGym to help out on the day. PLEASE NOTE THAT WHILST WE ARE SUPPORTING BRADBURY FIELDS WE ARE MEETING AT THE GREENBANK SPORTS CENTRE. (address below)

Essentially what we are going to be asked to do on the day is to provide sighted support and help with the smooth running of the day. Tasks will include helping people get to the respective events, helping out with tennis, cricket, football and other sports. There is also hopefully going to be the option of a short bike ride or run for those happy to lead these but these will be weather dependent.

There are two sessions: 10.30am-1.00pm and 1.00pm-4.00pm. This is slightly longer than the normal time for a community mission, so if you are only able to fill part of a slot then please do. If you can state your preference for which session you would like to do in the message box that would be great. Matthew is going to be staying for the whole day and you are more than welcome to join him.

The event is mainly going to be indoors. They have a medical exemption, which allows this event to take place. Part of what we might be asked to do is to help with Covid regulations, such as handing out masks and hand sanitiser, as well as helping out with registration. We will be asked to fill out a form ourselves just for their own insurance purposes.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask Mat. The last time we did something like this with Bradbury Fields it was great fun and very satisfying.

GoodGym advice for any indoor tasks asks for us all to do a lateral flow test (or if we have any symptoms than a PCR test is necessary)

Cleaning up and brightening up a small outdoor area

Sat 15 Jan 10:00 am
The Brain Charity, Norton Street, Liverpool, L3 8LR

Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.

Creating a pleasant space around the cycle storage area which is working towards becoming a cycling hub

Good Gym have been asked by Cycling Project - Wheels For All Coordinator to help them to clean up the space around where they keep their bicycles. They have a big container full of cycles in a small outdoor area at the back of The Brain Charity. The area is quite overshadowed by buildings and could do with a bit of TLC. The task will be some litter picking, weeding, sweeping and there are a small amount of railings around the cycle container that need to be painted to bring some brightness into the area. This is the start of transforming this small area into a place where people can gather before or after a ride. It's great that Goodgym have been given the opportunity to be at the start of this.

Cycling Projects is a national UK cycling charity which promotes inclusive cycling through a range of successful community engagement programmes that give people the opportunity to cycle on a regular basis; through help, support and guidance. You can find out more about the charity on their website https://cycling.org.uk/

Santa clause is coming to town... so is mini santa!

Sun 5 Dec
Report written by Steph

Once upon a time, on a cold December morning, an elf, a Santa ( who dressed on the bus) and a colourful personality met up at the port of Liverpool building thinking to themselves what the hell are we doing?!?

Santa met her friendly elf from the bus in Queens Square before skipping ( mostly because she was still trying to fix her pants) through town towards the waterfront.

Once the other Santa's started to arrive Ema, Pauline and myself were put to work directing the reds and blues to the start line ready for the Santa dash!

As the Santa's started to run through the start line, Pauline, Jess and myself joined in and completed the dash while Ema, Jo and Roz got ready.

Post dash (to which I finished first out of the group... yes its never going to happen again so I get to brag for once!), the magical six joined together like Santa's reindeers to help hand medals and selection boxes to the mini Santa's with the help of the cadets.

The scene was magical, there was snow( well bubbles), a live drumming band, Christmas music playing, characters on stilts, Santa's everywhere and lots of smiles from young and old.

Another great day, a great cause, bling for the dashers and as always great company. Lots of smiles, lots of dancing and lots of laughs. It's official. Christmas has come to Liverpool!

Santa Mini Dash Support team (also now supporting the main dash too!)

Sun 5 Dec 08:30 am
Port of Liverpool Building , Pier Head, Liverpool, L3 1BY
Supporting the kids Mini Dash

We are Santa Dashing Double Daring for this iconic event!

You can choose to Run the main 5K dash AND support the Mini Dash which starts just after the main dash has ended, or you can choose one or the other, whatever you feel up to!

In addition to the main 5K run there is also a 1K Mini Dash especially for children up to 12 years of age. The Mini Dash starts at around 11.00am once the main 5K has cleared and the start line is on Castle Street close to the finish line.

Parents are required to run with their children but parents do not have to enter. The Mini Dash is for children only.

We will be handing out the children's medals at the end and cheering them all across the finish line!

//UPDATE

We have been asked to help out with the main Santa Dash too, so if you are running it don't worry, you can join us to help with the mini still, but if you are not running and can join us earlier than wonderful!

Meeting at Pier Head at 8:30am next to the enquiry tent in front of the main gates at the Port of Liver Building

We'll be directing the running Santa's to the start line etc. as there has been a slight change to how they have done it in the past and they need us to help out with this.

We'll then be going over to Castle Street to get the start line for the Mini Dash ready, supporting the start and then giving out medals and chocolate selection boxes at the end!

Luckily the weather forecast for Sunday is dry with some sunshine, although it will still be chilly of course!

Snow -one here!

Sun 28 Nov
Report written by Sallyann Hardwick

The long awaited day arrived for our Goodgym social which had been organised by Pauline. https://www.goodgym.org/runners/pauline-harrison Sadly the winter lurgies and life events took hold of some of Liverpool Goodgymers and people had to cancel. Flying the GG flag today were the dynamic duo Jess https://www.goodgym.org/runners/jess-vickers and Sallyann (dynamic now as we both had had our share of lurgy earlier in the month).

The tour was amazing and well worth the visit. We learnt about the eccentric 'mole of Edge Hill' and walked through some of the tunnels that form a warren of tunnels (still being discovered) underneath our city. Over the years the tunnels had started to be used to pour rubbish in. So as the team continue to excavate they unearth items that had been thrown down holes into the tunnels. These include Victorian pottery oyster shells inkwells from a nearby school, jars from a local hospital and a model of a Dr Who Tardis!

As we resurfaced to daylight we found that it had started to snow. As we walked out of the tunnels into the snowy empty car and bike park we thought about our missing Goodgym mates - Snow - one here said Jess and a pun was born

Sun 5 Dec 08:30 am
Port of Liverpool Building , Pier Head, Liverpool, L3 1BY
Running round Liverpool dressed as Santa, what's not to love!

Join the GoodGym Liverpool team for some Santa Fun to kick off Christmas in style (well, style might be questionable, but definitely good fun!!)

The Liverpool Santa Dash is the biggest and longest established Santa Run in the UK and in just the second year (back in 2005) achieved Guinness World Record status for the Biggest Santa Gathering.

Now in it's 18th year the event is enjoyed by runners of all abilities as they take part in a day of enjoyment and atmosphere right in the heart of Liverpool.

The 5K fun run starts at the magnificent Pier Head in front of the famous Liver Building and by 9.30am the whole of the public space is completely full of Santas, many bedecked in traditional red with some blue among the mass crowd.

The 5K route flows through the city centre passing through the Royal Albert Dock and back along the main waterfront roads before turning into the tightly packed streets to finish in front of the Town Hall. Runners are greeted with giant Christmas characters and a flurry of snow right on the finish line.

It really kick starts Christmas in Liverpool every year and this run has everything for all the family.

//Make sure you sign up here for the Dash on their official page and collect your Santa Outfit (Red or Blue!)

Please note, you cannot take part if you haven't paid and registered with BTR via the link!!

We are also doing a community mission as soon as the main dash is finished! We will be supporting the Mini Dash, which is a 1 K run for children up to 12 yrs old, giving our medals and cheering them on! Sign up for this community mission here if you want to do them both!

//UPDATE

Those of us supporting the mini dash have now been asked to help out with the main dash too. This means that we can all meet together to say hi and cheer you all on. We'll be meeting at the Port Of Liverpool Building at 8:30am, see you there!

Fency meeting you here!

Thu 25 Nov
Report written by John Connaghan

A band of 8 merry Goodgymers came together, some at speed from Hope Street, some from across the road, some by hour and a half bus journey and all in good spirits.

Why were we in good spirits? Because we knew the importance of Sunflowers, the great work they do to support those with cancer and their families and it’s great to help those who help others. Our task was to clear furniture and to tidy the area at the side of the building so that they can host a Christmas party this weekend.

With pivots, squats and contortion the first task of moving a heavy bench out of the way was sorted. Next up was more team lifting of large fence panels. Thank you Roz for the pun! With shovels and spades, Jess, Jo, Roz and Heetu cleared the soil from the ugly storage sack and filled up the plant beds. Steph and Chris cleared the ground so it was clean underfoot for the party goers.

With the tasks completed in no time, an impromptu weeding session started as we hadn’t expended enough energy just yet. The extra work tidied up an area staff use on their breaks.

With promises of painting tasks for us no doubt we’ll be meeting Bobby soon again. In the meantime keep in mind the upcoming Birkenhead parkrun and task in early December.

Well done for coming out in the cold and helping a great charity

Making a space Christmas Fair ready!

Thu 25 Nov 18:30 pm
‘’A case history’ by John King , Hope street , Liverpool , L1 9BQ
Sprucing up an outdoor space for Sunflowers

Welcome to GoodGym Liverpool

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects across the Liverpool City Region.

The Task

Liverpool Sunflowers are a charity providing a range of support services for individuals and families dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

At the end of November they will be holding a Christmas Fair and need some help cleaning up a small outdoor space ready for some stalls. The space needs a little weeding between the flag stones, moving of garden furniture and some general sweeping and cleaning.

The area has some overhead cover and is well lit, with access to toilets. We've even been promised a cuppa!

The Run

We'll be meeting at the Suitcases on Hope Street for a warm up and a 3K run (with walk option) to the task. What 3 Words meet up link

Now evenings are getting darker we advise you to dig out those hi viz clothes and head/chest torches if you have one! Run Safe.

If you prefer the walk option, or would rather meet us at the venue either leave a comment below or message Ema via our whatsapp group or email (ema@goodgym.org)
