A Trip Around The Williamson Tunnels

Sun 28 Nov 11:30 am
Joseph Williamson’s House site, Mason Street, Liverpool, L7 3EW
Take an adventure and see Liverpool as you've never seen it before - underground

Most people will say, "I've never been to the Williamson Tunnels but I really want to go." Well, now is your chance as we are organising a trip. The tickets cost £5. We need to book in advance and because it is going to be walking over uneven ground and up and down quite a bit, you will need to have a reasonable level of mobility.

The Williamson Tunnels are steeped in history and as part of the experience you are taken on a fascinating tour around the tunnels and all sorts of amazing stories are revealed. Groups of up to 10 people can go at any one time. If we get more than 10 people wanting to go, we will sort out more than one trip. Once we have done the trip we will no doubt repair to a coffee shop or some such.

We want everyone to be able to go, regardless of their ability to pay, so please contact Ema and we'll sort you out. And the ultimate beauty of this is that no running is required. More details of where we are going to meet on the day will be given out nearer the time.

Let's get ready to rubble!

Tue 12 Oct
Report written by John Connaghan

On a calm warm evening, eight Goodgym members came to Broadgreen Hospital to have a run and to do a bit of landscaping.

Once we located each other and met with Fiona, we did a quick warm up before running to Dovecot Park and back fitting in two miles.

Fiona explained the task and we set to building the planters, filling them with rubble and compost. Once the five planters were built, we spent some time figuring a layout. Squares? Diamonds? In the end they were in square diamond formation! ‘Wilf’, the aptly named veteran wheelbarrow squeaked its discomfort as it helped us move over a tonne of compost to the planters.

Meanwhile Pauline and Fiona made grass Swiss roll piles to tidy another section ready for work. After a test of the new outdoor gym enough exercise was had and there’ll be plenty more for us to do to help green up more recreational natural areas. Well done all for the difference made

Broadgreen Hospital , Thomas Drive , Liverpool , L14 3LB
Helping the Hospital develop nature spaces on their land

Welcome to GoodGym Liverpool

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects across the Liverpool City Region.

The Task Our second session working with the NHS Recovery Ranger at a selection of Liverpool Hospitals, to help create beautiful spaces for nature and people to recover and thrive, turning patches of grass into wildflower meadows, planting trees and making some magic happen! This time at Broadgreen Hospital.

Now the evenings are getting darker it's a good idea to bring a head torch if you have one! And as always, bring your own gloves.

The Run (and walk)

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and always have a walking option too if that's more preferable for you. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

We will be meeting at the hospital for a gentle uphill run to Dovecot Park, a loop around the park and back. A walking option is also available.

The meet up point is off Thomas Drive, see here for the what 3 words location link

The run/walk starts at 6:30pm so please arrive a little early ready to start on time. It's also advisable to wear something bright/reflective (along with your GoodGym t-shirts of course) as we will be running through the streets around traffic.

Turf Wars

Mon 27 Sep
Report written by Sophie McClellan

On a slightly damp Monday evening, 9 Goodgymmers met, once again, on Hope Street. It was lovely to be joined by our task owner Fiona and to welcome Andy who has recently moved up from that there London.

After a quick warm up we set off for The Women's Hospital. The three walkers took a direct root, whilst the runners zigzagged through the streets of the Georgian quarter to Faulkner Square where we met for a quick Hiit session.

Heart rates and energy levels raised sufficiently, we began the task in earnest - digging up the turf around the fruit trees in the grounds of the hospital to clear space for wild flower seeds to be sown. We had soon cleared the space around two of the trees, despite the rain and failing light. Aside from needing a little work on our circle drawing we were satisfied with our work and had the muddy knees to prove it!

Thanks everyone for your hard work, and Fiona for inviting us - we will definitely be back to help out with future projects!

A peony for your thoughts

Mon 13 Sep
Report written by John Connaghan

A team of 11 Goodgym walkers and runners set out to brighten up the SANCTUARY Yarden.

Gathering around the Suitcases, the energy was bubbling as new and old Goodgym members met. It was brilliant to have Frances join us, returning to help this brilliant charity. After a top to toe warm up, we headed off. Pauline leading the walking group and the runners taking a scenic route to admire the Wigwam and Giraffe buildings before rendevousing in Crown St Park. Selfies and parading complete the team met the wonderful Maddie who had everything ready to go. A mix of clearing top soil, weeding and emptying soil commenced with the team working slickly. Two planters were completely revived with fresh compost and the rest were weeded and topped. The difference was considerable and left the Yarden looking much more fitting of the place name.

Well done team for the great effort, thanks to Pauline for walk leading and photos and to Steph for the pun!

Pull up (and Paint )Your Seat!

Thu 9 Sep
Report written by Ema Quinn

The Paper Cup Project works to support people who are sleeping rough or experiencing homelessness in Liverpool. They do incredible work getting food and clothing, medical support and, when possible, accommodation to people who need it most. Their next project is to open a cafe which will provide training and support for people wanting to get back into employment, as well as a safe place to access advice and information.

On a rainy evening eight GoodGymers came together to add a little bit of support to the project by scraping off old wallpaper, painting some walls, and up-cycling some stools. We had walkers, runners and cyclists amongst us, and set to working in the dim light (the cafe doesn't have full lighting yet!) with some of us getting more paint on ourselves than the walls!

A huge welcome back to Grace, everyone loved seeing you again!

We will be going back to the cafe to help again at some point, and most definitely to enjoy a cuppa and slice of cake once they are open.

The Tree Musketeers

Sat 28 Aug
Report written by Ema Quinn

The original plan to create a new pathway through a copse of trees wasn't possible with the three of us who had signed up for this session, however there is always something a goodgymer is able to get on with to make an impact! The pathway was agreed for another day and we collected up our trusted litter pickers and set about helping to clean up the park, focusing on the children's play area and the gorgeous nature trail.

Springfield park is attached to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, and with the hospitals stunning green roofs and the parks trees and trails, it's a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours in. The Friends of Springfiled park where also helping Send Crisis Liverpool to give out free pre-loved school uniforms to local families and the park was full of life.

The nature trail through the trees had lots of discoveries, like carved benches for some quiet time, and sculptures showing anything from HiiT and Yoga routines, to varieties of birds and leaves, a real treasure to explore.

A lovely gentle lunchtime fitness with one of us doing doing 5 miles in total including the walk there and back, on a beautiful sunny day!
