A regular human passionate about helping others, wild about nature 😜 and enjoy being active!
We are creating a community herbalist network, we are growing herbs to learn about herbal remedies. Onsite we are growing some herbs in these beds to teach anyone in the network about how to grow and use herbs.
All turned up on time raring to go. Well done Jem and Peter for cycling on the hottest day if the year.
Peter got straight down to putting his well thought out plans for fixing the subsiding shed into action. Jem and Linda beat a path through the undergrowth to find the water butt and sorted out some very thirsty fruit trees. Then the usual weeding of paths and plant beds took place before they were also thoroughly watered.
In the meantime Peter had made a great job of straightening up and the shed by means of jacking and shoring it up, and strengthening with extra bolts, all that was left was a few screws in the front facing and he was done...amazing job.
All in all we got a lot of work done in just over an hour. Well done us.
Jem has done 10 good deeds. They are a trusted GoodGym runner and are now eligible to join their local TaskForce.
With the weather being a lot cooler today this was the ideal task for our team of volunteers to get stuck into.
It was very nice to meet my good friend Shaun, who I volunteered with during Covid to deliver food parcels from our local Foodbank to vulnerable local neighbours.
GoodGym visited the Bowling Green in Barking to help out with the creation of a community herbalist network - growing and learning about herbs and herbal remedies.
We were with Shaun and Company Drinks Grow Club to assist with preparing growing beds in order to help anyone in the network to learn to grow and use herbs.
We shared good banter amongst ourselves and shifted quite a few wheelbarrows full of soil to fill the beds.
Shaun pulled a rabbit out of the hat with delicious, ice cold, elderflower cordial. We both shared these with our Foodbank drops last year and I now realise what a treat it was for our patrons.
The shift was a very enjoyable one, in pleasant surroundings and top company.
Thanks Company Drinks for hosting us and we hope to be working with you all again soon.

A Tourist likes nothing better than exploring new areas and meeting new people, and that's what Jem has been doing. Jem has been to three different GoodGym areas now - nice!
Another warm Wednesday evening at the massive echoey warehouse saw Fiona, Jem, Stephen, PvT and myself helping out Taidgh and Chris from Crisis by getting stuck into box ordering by sequence, everyone's favourite task of pallet wrapping, loading of monitor screens and keyboards in a delicate balancing act and then using the pallet trucks to shift everything around in some form of co-ordinated fashion to enable Taidgh to demonstrate his forklifting skills moving all of this remaining IT equipment to the loading bay.
In spite of the subterranean conditions in the warehouse, it proved to be warm work, but 19 pallets later our tasks were complete - Chris was most grateful as this time last year he'd had to do all that work on his own.
Still no definitive date for Crisis to exit the building, and definitely more work for Friday's group to get done...and yet again, it was still light and warm when we exited the building.
The Crisis team are in the final stages of vacating the Leven Road premises. Down to just two staff members, Crisis Operations Manager Anna has been in touch to say, "All the equipment left in the warehouse now needs putting on pallets and taking to the loading bay! With GoodGym's help, we'll get this task done immeasurably faster, ready for the hire trucks to take the stock away."
AFTER YOUR BRILLIANT CONTRIBUTION LAST WEEK, WE’VE BEEN ASKED BACK THIS WEEK!
Can you help?
What you need to know
The session will run from 6:30-8:30pm. If you need to leave a bit earlier, that'll be fine.
You may be doing anything from labelling equipment to moving pallets and cages. Full training will be provided where needed, and both Anna and Taidgh will be leading this task, so there'll be bundles of help and support as you work!
We have 7 large raised beds that we need help to fill with soil
Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.
As their own group have been unable to meet this week, we have had a desperate plea from SHP to do an additional session watering at the allotments. There are watering cans and buckets at the site. Please bring your own gloves and antibacterial gel.
