Mission Possible

Jamie completed their first weekend mission.

Jamie has forgone the usual weekend routine. Instead of lie-ins, roasts and strolls around the park Jamie has dropped everything to run a GoodGym mission for someone who needed help. Respect

Because I used to scrub her, but it’s wall over now!

Brighton Report written by Tara Shanahan

And I thought I was obsessed with running!! Tonight’s task owner Ivan Lyons has run an incredible 60 marathons in 60 weeks and is well on his way to his goal of 100 marathons in 100 weeks. Normally when people ask me how many marathons I’ve run, I proudly tell them 9, but on this occasion I answered with a meek and mild “only 9!”

In tonight’s news we put out the call for more runners to join us for The Weakest Link on June 20th. Find out more and sign up here.

We also talked about the upcoming extra weekend group run that coincides with our first birthday in early July. It’s a great organisation that we can’t work with on our normal Tuesday evening so we’ll be heading there on a Saturday (after parkrun!). Find out more and sign up here.

Back to tonight’s task and it was a longer run of just over 3.5k all the way to Hove Museum, but what a perfect evening for it! The sea was flat as a pancake and the temperature was perfect for running. As Juliet has a bad foot she cycled and took some lovely pictures of us running along the seafront with the West pier in the background. We arrived at task bang on time at 7pm and set to work scrubbing algae off the white walls. Task owner Ivan has recently formed a “Friends of Hove Museum Gardens’ group and they have had two previous work days where they have made a good start on a time consuming job. We completed about another 10 metres worth of scrubbing as well as a sub team who did a cracking job of pulling up some ubiquitous bindweed and sticky weed.

After 30 minutes of hard work we set off back to base at a cracking pace and a few of us enjoyed a pint and burger after for our monthly social.

Next week we are being put to work by Cllr David Gibson in the Hanover and Elm Grove area. Might be weeding, might be graffiti painting! Sign up here and keep on running!!

Fine Pruning

Brighton Report written by Tara Shanahan

After the biggest weekend in Brighton’s running calendar the big news tonight was all about the fantastic achievements of our regular runners in the Brighton marathon. Massive congratulations to Sherman who not only finished the marathon on Sunday he made it to our group run just 2 days later! And also congratulations to Worthing & Brighton regular Beth who finished in a cracking time of 3.55 on her first attempt!

Thanks to a break in Brighton’s darts league we welcomed back Sean for the second time and Ashley for his first. Big kudos to Ashley for completing the distance and for keeping smiling throughout! We hope to see you both again soon.

Tonight’s task was back to the somewhat overgrown area at the front of the almshouses we visited a few weeks ago. Although we’d picked up masses of bottles and beer cans on our previous visit there were plenty more that had either been added or were just buried deep under the undergrowth. The vegetation has clearly been providing cover for some nefarious activities judging by the litter we uncovered! Let’s just say I’ll be putting all those gloves through on a hot wash!

After much litter picking and some hard pruning the area looked loads better and much more light and open which will hopefully discourage those nefarious activities and make it more pleasant for the residents of the almshouses.

We headed to the Level for a quick game of team tic-tac-toe aka noughts and crosses, which was nail biting stuff being so close between the reds and greens with finally the winning team being….I’ve forgotten already!!

Great work tonight guys, I know it wasn’t the most pleasant of tasks but we have hopefully shed a little light onto a shady spot and the world is ever so slightly better than it was before!

See you next week for another go at those railings!

Great to be with you guys, again. I consider it a privilege to run with you guys... will be there again, next time there isn’t any darts for The Bevy! Well done Ashley, Beth and Sherman!

Fitter Pickers

Brighton Report written by Tara Shanahan

Our planned task tonight was cancelled as the task owner was ill so the focus was more on fitness than doing good, although good was done!

After speeches and warm up we spent a few minutes picking up litter from the New Steine where we do our weekly warm up. After quickly filling a carrier bag we set off to the seafront for the first instalment of the night’s action packed fitness fun, a one kilometre time trial. I gave myself a head start to ensure I was at the finish to give you your times which was just as well as there were some pretty impressive times, with a few of you coming in very close to the 4 minute mark. Remember your times so you can see how much you’ve improved when we do it again in a few weeks!

I’d planned for us to spend a few minutes picking up litter form the Peter Pan playground, but there wasn’t any! So we got on with our Hunt the Cone game where team White convincingly beat team Yellow but you were all winners as you all got to do loads of exercises to make you fitter and stronger!

After popping in to say hello to the fantastic Sussex Homeless Support Bus, who I hope we can help out with a task at some point, we set off for part 3 of our night of fitness fun! This included a technique focus on arm drive which you all put into practice excellently on the 5 ramp sprints. Although arms become less important as you slow down its still good to get into good habits and keep those elbows driving backwards to propel you forwards.

The final instalment of our fitness extravaganza was a 10 minute abs blast pinched straight from the Bodycoach so here it is if you fancy another go at home!

Next week, normal service will resume and we will be gardening at the almshouses at the bottom of Elm Grove in DAYLIGHT!!!!!

School Runnings

Brighton Report written by Ed Field (he/him)

It’s always such a relief to get to Goodgym and see pun generator Roy Hill! Thanks Roy, for another corker!

It’s equally fantastic to meet a couple of first timers to Brighton GG such as Julie (previously from Westminster) & Chloe, who jump right in with boundless enthusiasm for the concept, the task and the fitness! You are both very welcome!

In the news we bigged up

  • Helena - for being most cheered, most cheering and most good deeding for February
  • Michael for running the most k’s in February
  • Tabatha for running a race in the most exotic location…Tanzania!!

Our journey to our task tonight involved a bit of a hill(!!!) which you all coped with admirably. On arrival at St John the Baptist School we split into two groups to ensure all got a chance to both do good and keep fit. The do-gooding involved weeding and digging over the school’s educational garden which is used as a learning resource, and thank you all for managing not to fall in the pond! The keep fitting involved 2 rounds of a smorgasbord of 8 exercises for 30 seconds each with just 15 seconds rest. Again top marks for all for giving it your all!

Task complete we headed to the playground for a group photo in what must be one of the best views in Brighton. I told you the hill would be worthwhile!

On arrival back to base a few of us went on for our monthly social where we chatted about loads of interesting stuff such as the joys and benefits of Goodgym, changing attitudes to consumption, run technique, university connections and the price of avocados in the Open Market (£1 for a box of 14!!!)

Next week’s task is still to be confirmed but it will involve doing something to get you a little bit fitter and make the world a little bit better - so sign up now
