That's a wrap!

Wed 1 Dec
Report written by Amy Lovell

'Twas the first day of advent, and we couldn't have asked for a more festive task! Eleven Santa's helpers - dressed not only in the traditional red and white, but also sporting some excellent festive accessories - ran, walked and cycled to the Spencer Denney Centre in Windsor to help Age UK prepare for Christmas.

Special mention to Georgeta and Sheila for cycling the 20km roundtrip from Maidenhead on this extremely chilly evening - brrrr-illiant stuff! Also big thanks to Hannah for walk-leading, Jess for back-marking and Jen for her super knowledge of Windsor underpasses.

At the Spencer Denney Centre, I got a lovely cheer for managing to unlock without jingling any alarm bells and we were delighted to find that our task owner Rachel had left out all the ingredients for a great Christmassy evening. Jack's festive playlist and Jen's scrummy mince pies provided the icing on the Christmas cake.

Hannah, Georgeta, Anita, Emma and Michelle, Jen, and Vikie made like socially distanced elves and wrapped well over 60 gifts. Sheila and Jack decked the hall with festive bunting, fa la la la la la la la la, and since Jess had a Christmas tree hat on, it was only right that she should dress the tree. Fir(st) she untangled the fairy lights, then she did a tree-mendous job with the tinsel and baubles. It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Speaking of music, we finished the evening with a fitness session to the tune of Deck the Halls (one burpee for every fa la la la la!) and We wish you a Merry Christmas ('we wish you squats', 'figgy pudding high knees' and 'won't go until we get some jacks'). The music was so quiet it was more silent disco than epic Christmas party but we still raised a few smiles from passers by and we got a bit fitter too.

We took the same routes on our return journeys. In total the runners and walkers covered about 5km, with the odd extra 'loop back' for some so that we could make sure everyone stayed warm and no one got lost. It was a nice to surprise to meet Anita's husband Santosh the Great in the car park after we finished our stretches.

Christmas can be a stressful time of year and it can be hard to find the time to exercise, especially when the weather is uninviting. However if you're like me, it's at times like this that I most need exercise and fresh air for my mental health. If you're looking for the motivation to get out and escape the Christmas crazies then click here to check out the listings for lots of social 5km runs and feel-good activities like tree planting.

Next Wednesday we will be delivering leaflets in Maidenhead to share St Peter's Church's programme of Christmas events. A great activity to keep that festive feeling alive and to keep us warm! Sign up here.

Putting up decorations and wrapping presents for Age Concern Windsor

Wed 1 Dec 18:45 pm
East Berks College Claremont Road Car Park, Windsor, SL4 3AS
Help the Spencer Denney Centre get ready for the festive season

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Windsor...well it will do by the time we're finished anyway. With bells on!

Tonight we meet up in the East Berks College Claremont Road Car Park near Holy Trinity Garrison Church, where we will have a quick briefing and warm up. We will then travel on foot 2.5km to the Spencer Denney Centre in Clewer. Everyone is welcome at GoodGym. You can choose whether to walk or run, we encourage everyone to be sociable along the way and we always have a back marker or two to make sure no one gets left behind.

On arrival, we will channel our inner Christmas elves and bring some festive cheer by putting up decorations and wrapping presents. Best task ever!!

After the task we'll enjoy a quick fitness session before heading back running or walking to our start location, where we will stretch and say our goodbyes. If you're feeling super festive why not bring along a few mince pies...?

The one with the goose

Wed 10 Nov
Report written by Amanda Quincey

Amy led the carpark bean-based warm up to goosen up our limbs before we set off for our group run to the Spencer Denny Centre. We were delighted to welcome two new members, Michelle and Emma who joined the rest of the GoodGym gaggle for their first mission. Well done to Sheila for cycling from Maidenhead to meet us at the Centre.

We had a quick gander of the tasks we had been set but there was no time for swanning around as we could not be-leaf how many leaves had covered the garden. Sheila took charge of the compost heap and Michelle and Steve got busy clearing leaves. Sophie did a fab job digging out the weeds from the patio and Amanda and Emma planted some new flowers. Much to Amy’s delight, the team then took their boots to dismantling an old, rotten cabinet. No stone was left unturned as the GoodGymers swept and tidied and cleaned making the garden lovely again for the local community users.

There were no exgooses given and everyone mucked in before Amy led a circuit fitness session and we ran back to our transport, clocking up an impressive 4km to and from the task.

Gardening for Age Concern Windsor

Wed 10 Nov 18:45 pm
Car Park next to Windsor FC, St Leonards Rd, Windsor, SL4 3DR
Tidy up the garden at the Spencer Denney centre so it can be enjoyed by visitors

On this evenings group run/walk we will be heading to the Spencer Denney Centre in Clewer Green to help Age Concern Windsor give their garden some TLC. The to do list includes hedge trimming, planting and weeding. Gardening gloves and a head torch are a must for this session.

Our itinerary for the evening starts at the free car park next to Windsor FC, where we will have our briefing and warm up. The direct route to the task is just under 2km. If there is an appetite for going further then we can also add on a bit more. GoodGymers are a sociable bunch and everyone is welcome. You can choose to walk or run to the task and we will always have a back marker and look out for each other so that no one need worry about getting lost or left behind.

We hope to spend around 40 minutes at the Spencer Denney Centre, working together to get everything done. Then we get our reward...the fun fitness session! Suitable for all fitness levels, this session will get us nice and warm again, ready for our return walk or run back to Windsor FC. We will finish with some stretching before seeing everyone off safely.
