Alleyway Clean Up

Wed 29 Sep 18:00 pm
Westminster Street/Walthall Street Alleyway, Gates on Stalbridge Road, Crewe, CW2 7LP
Make the back alleys of crewe a cleaner, safer and nicer environment for the local residents

On this task, we will be joining forces with other local residents and volunteers to make the alleways of Crewe a cleaner and nicer space to live.

Lots of work has already been done by the local community on this amazing project to make these spaces brighter and cleaner.

Tonight we will be helping to install the hanging baskets!

As the nights are drawing in, we'll be starting this task a little earlier than normal and the other groups will be there from 5. Our exercise session will be at the end of the evening instead of the beginning.

Bikes will have to be locked up somwhere locally, so please bring a lock if you're travelling by bike.

Please meet directly at the task. We are meeting at the Westminster/Walthall Street alleyway gates in Stalbridge Road.

A 'Raily' Lovely Evening

Wed 22 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

Last night, 4 lovely Goodgym members made their way to the Motherwell hub to help them with a variety of tasks that needed doing.

Motherwell is a local charity that does amazing work to support women within the community. We’ve done tasks for them before and it’s always a pleasure to support the fantastic work that they do. Tonight was no exception as we met with founder and Chief Exec.

But before we started our jobs, we went on another lovely run. The surrounding area of the Motherwell hub is beautiful as there’s plenty of woodland and green space to enjoy. After a quick warmup, we set off from base and headed down to the public footpath that leads to the park. The brook winds its way alongside the path and I’ve spotted kingfishers along there before now, but sadly, not tonight. When we reached the crossroads, we turned around and took a slightly different route back making it an almost circular route. The only downside of the circular route is the enormous hill at the end – still, it made for a good cardio exercise as we sort of sprinted our way up!

When we arrived back, Kate set us to work. Emily & Kat started to assemble two clothing rails. The rails will house all the winter coats that are donated to the uniform exchange. They set to work and soon had the rails put together. Maurice mowed the big long lawn at the back of the garden. It looked lovely when he’d finished and definitely kept the heart pumping. And I was tasked with the job of organising the two book shelves that form the library. This was a dream job as I’d always wanted to be a librarian when I was a child, lol! I was in my element as I sorted the books into genres. Emily & Kat were so fast that they were then able to help sort out putting more clothes onto hangers. I’d say it was a pretty productive evening.

As always, the company was fabulous! Well done everyone on another amazing night supporting local charities in our local community. You’re all awesome.

Helping Motherwell Box Up Summer Uniform & Get Halloween Ready!

Wed 22 Sep 18:15 pm
54 Beech Drive, Crewe, CW2 8RG
The uniform exchange is not only helping people who may struggle financially to pay for uniform but also is helping to look after our environment by recycling

It's always a pleasure to help Motherwell with their tasks as the work that they do for our local community is incredible.

As summer will be drawing to an end (boo), it's time to get all the summer uniform boxed up and put away ready for next year. We're going to be helping with this as well as sorting out the winter coats and Halloween costumes ready for the next season.

There might also be some gardening to do, so please come with your gloves!

Some Great Apple Catchers!

Wed 8 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

It was a super warm night tonight but it didn’t stop 10 committed Goodgym runners from coming together for their weekly run and task.

Tonight, runners made their way to the task – some cycling and some walking. It was definitely a nice night for bike ride as the breeze was very welcome!

We met at the old Manchester University building – now used for other purposes, more recently acting as the bustling COVID vaccine hub. For many of our volunteers, they were very familiar with the surroundings having spent so much time volunteering there during lockdown!

We started our evening with a warmup – as the children have recently returned to school, we gave it a school playground theme (not sure how happy everyone was about that, lol!). Our exercises included skipping, hopscotch, jumping (like we used to do in the sack race!) and a good old run (I didn’t go so far as to make them play ‘tick’). And based on last week’s community mission, I thought Nigel might appreciate some kiddie-based activities!

We had two groups tonight – a running group and a walking group. It was a hot evening, so we had a very steady run around the business park. It doesn’t sound very exciting but actually, it’s quite a green business park with lots of trees and greenery (maybe next time, we’ll take in the woodland area).

After our exercise, we headed across to Autism Inclusive where we started the task of apple picking. Some of us collected apples from the floor, while others picked straight from the tree. Apples had to be sorted into 3 categories – rotten, slightly inedible but not too bad, and good. The rotten apples were collected and went straight to compost, the slightly inedible apples were collected by a local cider company (reducing waste) and the good apples were going to the food bank.

It was a lovely evening, and it was wonderful to see other members of the community coming together to support this task. We worked alongside co-cop pioneers, local volunteers as well as the Town Council Mayor. We had good conversation and good fun. It was another successful evening filled with fun, friendship, fitness and the feel-good factor.

Hopefully the children that use the facilities of Autism Inclusive will no longer have to dodge the apples as they play!

Well done everyone. Amazing community spirit as always!

xxxx

Tonight’s Task: Child's Play!

Mon 6 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

The nights are slowly beginning to draw in but that didn’t deter this fabulous bunch of lovelies from getting themselves down to the Wishing Well allotment. Although, this week, the purpose of the task was slightly different from the usual – tonight it was all about getting the toys set up and cleaned ready for the arrival of the children as they come back to the centre.

Emily, Karen, Nigel & Maurice spent a fabulous evening together getting everything ready. The lawns were cut, the play equipment assembled and cleaned and everywhere weeded and tidied. At times, assembling the equipment was a bit like the Krypton Factor but our fabulous team weren’t deterred!

In fact, from the pictures, you’ll see that the play equipment was thoroughly tested!!! Looking at the pictures, I’m not sure who will get the most enjoyment out of them – the children or our members (Nigel especially!).

Another amazing mission accomplished. Well done team! You’re all awesome!

Weed Did It!

Wed 1 Sep
Report written by Nicola Marshall

Gosh, the nights are really starting to draw in – don’t know about you but I’m not ready for Autumn yet!

Tonight saw 5 of us come together for another great task. Some of us ran our way there, some of us cycled and some of us walked. It was a lovely evening for any of the above.

We started our warmup with some simple star jumps, squats and high knees – all of which (the exercise and the reps were decided by our lovely members ;-)), then we set off on our run. It was quite nice to be running somewhere different. We meandered through the woods, taking us down a gentle hill until we reached the main grassy area of Joey the Swan (if anyone wants to know the story of Joey, just ask!). We ran the long stretch to the other end of the park, we followed the stream and saw plenty of dogs and their owners along the route (some more friendly than others, lol). Rather than retracing our steps, we took a slightly different route back. We ran across the bridge and through the area that feels a little bit secret as it’s surrounded by quite rich foliage. Then we reached the bottom of the hill – time for some hill reps! (groan). We all did one push up the big hill but Nahashon and Emily went back for a second serving! From the top of the hill, it was a small run back to the building for the start of our task.

We were back at Motherwell tonight. It’s been a while since we’ve done any tasks for them, so it was great to be back there. Motherwell are a charity that work with women through their journey of life – lots of work around motherhood but so many other things as well. Kate, the founder and CEO greeted us and talked us through the task.

The charity are holding an open day next week and Kate wanted the outside of the building smartening up a bit, so that it looked more presentable for visitors coming.

Nahashon and Claire worked on the front of the building – scraping and pulling up lots and lots of weeds. The place was transformed within the hour! It was amazing! Maurice, Nicola and Emily were tasked to the back, where again, it was our job to tidy up the weeds. Pulling up the weeds wasn’t a problem – it was identifying the difference between a weed and plant that was!!

Although we weren’t able to complete all the tasks that were intended this evening (we were locked out of the building), we still made a significant impact, and the outside space is now looking much more cared for than it did before. I’m sure it will be a hugely successful open day.

Thanks for having us Motherwell.

Gardening & Cleaning Play Equipment at the Wishing Well

Mon 6 Sep 18:30 pm
Jubilee House, St. Paul’s Street, Crewe, CW1 2QA
It will make the outdoor safe for the children to play in

The Wishing Well will soon be welcoming back their smaller guests to the centre. The children haven't been able to use the facilities since pre COVID. They're really looking forward to welcmoing them back but it does mean that it's important to ensure the garden is a safe space for them to play in.

The task for this evening will be to get rid of any brambles, clear the weeds on the path and clean and set up the play equipment on the lawn. I'm sure it will be another fun, rewarding night.

Please meet at Jubilee House and bring your gloves! :)

A Sight To Be-hoe-ld

Wed 18 Aug
Report written by Nicola Marshall

Firstly, a HUGE welcome 2 lovely new members, Emma & Phoebe who joined us for the first time tonight. We hope you had a great evening and will be back to see us again soon! Your T-shirts will be en route to you as we speak! ;-)

We spent another fabulous evening down at the Flag Lane Baths working on the beginnings of a HUGE project to restore this iconic building into a bustling community hub.

We had two groups again this evening - a walking group and a running group. It’s always great to have a walking group so that everyone gets an opportunity to take part. A big thank you to Emily for leading for us tonight :))

It was another great evening spent with lots of different members of the community. It really is so lovely to see so many people joining forces in a combined effort to help bring this amazing concept to life!!

We hoed, we weeded and we swept. The transformation over the past 3 weeks really is nothing short of miraculous and really is testament to community spirit and people coming together.

We are always thrilled and privileged to be involved in this fabulous project and tonight was no exception. We look forward to being back again next week!!

Well done to Goodgym and to everyone involved in making tonight another amazing success!!
