What a re-leaf it was so hot and sunny

Sun 28 Feb
Report written by Helen Conner

The weather was mighty fine, the sky was blue and the sun was shining bright. You would never have guessed it was February in the UK and well what a re-leaf!

Hidden amongst the buildings on the steep hill in Widcombe lies a burial ground for Quakers. As you enter through the inconspicuous gates you enter an oasis of calm and are greeted by an excitable puppy!! I forgot to take a picture of the puppy, but I think everyone who attended would agree that it he was gorgeous.

There was lots of work to do, so we split the tasks between us.

  • Emily planted a tree, moved a water butt with Jer and fill an uneven area with top soil.
  • Jer and Sam moved some headstones to a different part of the garden
  • Max and Stephanie stripped the ivy off the wall
  • Emily and Helen cut back the diseased tree to make room for new plants. Jer and then Emily joined in with the fun and managed to help bring down a massive branch with some sawing exercise. Boy, did I feel that in my arms :) !

In just two hours we managed a great deal and filled five huge bags with garden clippings!

Well done to all for acheiving so much in such little time and we certainly lucked out with the weather!

Until next time...see-saw you then!

5 Goodgymers from around Bath walked and ran on a cold, wintery morning to Alice Park. The task was to move 30+ heavy bags full of clay, soil, stones and concrete to a skip about 50 metres away.

We quickly developed a system where we empted the bags into buckets and then moved the buckets via sack truck or wheelbarrow to the skip.

In only an hour the whole area was cleared and now the pavillion can be used as a shelter once again for the visitors of the community garden.

Going with the flow >>

Sun 7 Feb
Report written by Helen Conner

7 Goodgymers volunteered at the Bath Pavillion with BEMS. The group invited to the centre for their vaccine were categorised as those with serious medical conditions that have been advised to shield since last March. As this group are very vulnerable we were all asked to undertake a covid lateral flow test.
After all receiving the all clear we were briefed on our roles.

We had the whole flow covered in the centre. Our roles essentially ensured that the people invited for their vaccinations were checked before they moved through the building whilst maintaining social distancing and exited back to their cars so their was minimal time spent at the centre.

From the door, Emily braved the freezing temperatures and managed the flow into the building, Helen then asked a series of questions to ensure they could have the vaccine. A BEMS offical checked them in and then Doristook their temperature and put gel on their hands.

Alison and Rachel helped inside the hall ushering people to their vaccination booths, whilst Cosmo ensured they knew how to exit the building.

Whilst Mary marshalled the side of the building for those attending who required assisted access. She performed temperature checks and asking the series of questions before sending them into the main hall.

Well done to all involved and for being part of our local fight against coronovirus!

Sat 13 Feb 10:00 am
Alice Park, Gloucester Road, Bath, BA1 7BL
Remove safety hazard and return space to the community

The local shelter in Alice Park is now out of use from a build up of garden waste material. This has become an urgent matter as it is now presenting a safety issue and the community group would like our help in clearing the space into a skip to return it to the community.

This mission will involve lifting and placing garden waste into a skip. The task owner will create a system to lighten the load of the bags for safe lifting and social distancing will be in place due to covid.

All tools will be provided. Please bring your own gloves to the task.
