On your bike!

4 awesome Greenwich runners ran over 5km to spread the word about the Big Bike Ride in aid of the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice

Last night we were joined by Stacey who came on a few runs earlier in the year and is now back woohoo! Welcome back Stacie! It was lovely to meet you! We also had the lovely Simona back after a few weeks off and brilliant Ben and his head torch!

We did a little warm up and got going relatively quickly as we had a lot of leaflets to get through! Even if we were to only deliver half of them it would have been a success but we had quite a bit of time so I was hopeful! So we set off towards Maze Hill station. There is a good cluster of residential streets around there and the plan was to hit as many as possible in the 45 minutes we had. So off they went, running between each house.. AMAZING! Good interval training right there!

There were some pretty annoying post boxes. Those ones with the brushes in are a real pain and the ones really low down on the floor as well. Ben and I got stuck on the high side of the road for a good 5 minutes with each door having a flight of stairs leading up to it! What a workout! And then the houses with the gates... urgh! #postmanproblems.

After 15 minutes everyone's flyer pile was noticeably smaller, and the end was in sight! Just a few more houses to go! Simona struck gold with a block of flats with all of the postboxes on the outside.. Nice one! A few minutes later and they were all cleared! Amazing! We took a group photo and headed back for the fitness session.

Even though we were running and walking the whole time, it was at quite a nice chilled pace so we finished off by a little track workout! We did 5 sets of 30 seconds at 80-90% effort and 30 seconds rest in between and the idea was to run further round the track each time. We used the quad back at the college which made a pretty good makeshift track! This is a pretty hard workout but everyone absolute nailed it!

Really well done guys, hopefully the event will have lots of attendees now! Thanks so much for all your hard work and see you next week!

Tree-lay

9 runners met on a sunny night to run 4km whilst wheeling trees around Peckham.

With the sun shining, transport only slightly delayed and some willing hands, legs and backs, we ran a short distance to Peckham Multiplex to meet Asha, Creative Director for the inaugral Peckham Festival celebrating all things and people cultural in Peckham and around.

She had a load of trees in metal wheeled bins to be pushed about 1km from the Cinema to Copeland Park where the festival is taking place.

We split into teams of 3 with Asha as our front woman leading the way and making sure cars had spotted us and that we were still going to get under the bridges and powerlines with the super big trees.

Trees on wheels

It took some serious muscle pushing the bins particularly on some road that could do with attention. It was a task that took brains as well as brawn with some tight spaces to squeeze through.

Celebs for a night

I'm not sure the people of Peckham have witnessed wheelie trees before so we were snapped and have no doubt been posted to social media sites.

We did the effort twice, moving all the trees that weren't being used as bicycle racks. 6 trees in place two weeks before the festival is pretty good going and the festival team were pretty pleased with our efforts and very grateful for the help. We beat their pb!

Special thanks to Asha who was wearing jeans and carrying a handbag but still jogged with us on our way back for round two.

Not content with moving the earth, we went for a quick session on the Rye involving pairs, running round a Willow Tree and various core exercises to help speed.

We finished up sweaty and pleased with a bit of a different task complete and an all over workout.

Special thanks to Will's brain for this weeks pun title.

Who fancies a strim?

Unlucky for some, 13 runners took on a shed surrounded by lots of cobwebs and flower pots as well as 3.6km, a hill and some sprints.

We welcomed some travelling GoodGymmers as well as some first timers who got straight to it.

After a long run to Surrey Docks Farm last week, we had a shorter and more familiar route to Grove Park Allotments. Though up hill and a bit sweaty, we all made it in one piece and with no drama.

Lots of people are away at the allotments so there was lots to do... Strimming, watering, path clearing, paint brush cleaning, web clearing and shed waterproofing. A team with yoghurt pots to hand (big up Helena for bringing her own) got to work on the shed and the community board after sweeping off lots of cobwebs. We were a bit sad that it wasn't a more colourful coat but I guess waterproofing for the winter is a little bit more important.

what colour would you paint your shed?

The rest of us were spread across the communal areas in the allotments, lots of need for strimming though the strimmer was of the more lively variety! Lots of watering and weeding and dreaming of having a London garden and then, all of a sudden, time was up.

A quick round up and team pic and we were off. We took a different route home and stopped in Warwick Park for a quick pyramid session. As time was short, the group only had to do 4 rounds...60% effort lap, 1 Burpee, 70% effort lap, 2 burpees, 80-90%effort, 3 burpees, all out lap, 4 burpees. And then we were done.

After a quick jog back and a stretch whilst Pritesh told us about the next big goodgym social and we were off to the Rye Pub. We made it in time to see the GB men win our first gold medal for the diving & to eat some yummy post-run fuel.

See you next week folks.

This Little Piggie Went to GoodGym

On a gorgeous golden evening, twelve pacey Peckhamites pushed through Rye Lane to get to the Surrey Docks Farm, for some sh*t shovelling, apple picking, leaf lopping, pig feeding fun. A total of almost 12km were run (yes, 12!) and we all left happy, safe in the knowledge that no animals were harmed in the making of this run report.

A very big thank you to Beth, for tonight's Old MacGoodGymtastic pun

As regular Southwark trainer Jo was away this evening, I popped over from Lewisham to have some fun with some stalwart regulars and some eager first-timers - hello and hi-five to all of you ( I won't name names here because I kind of lost track of who was new and who wasn't, sorry!). Thank you to Beth, who was the key-holder tonight and let us all in, so we could enjoy the smell of coffee and leave our belongings safely during our run. Once we had all assembled, it was time to run through a few introductions, go through the evening ahead and chat about coach running and missions (and maybe mention a little relay race this weekend, that is set to rival the Olympic Games themselves!).

Before long, we were ready to warm ourselves up before what would be a pretty long run. Some name-checking (and double-checking, using not a ball, but a 'thingie', fashioned out of a handy buff, GoodGym trainers are resourceful folk you know). We checked our form with a few drills (walking high-knees, fast high-knees and so on, you know the kind of thing, made to give you super strong cores, light landing and that all important powerful sprint finish).

Lead the way!

As this is not my usual area, but I do sometimes dip in and out of here on my bike or long runs, I am sort of familiar with the area, to a point. Thankfully I had Michael to reinforce my belief in my carefully learned directions and we took the lead together towards Surrey Docks Farm. Well, I say 'together', he is FAST! 'Come back!' I shouted, 'Slow down!', 'Steady!'. With Beth kindly offering to back-mark, we knew that nobody would be left behind, but made sure we regrouped every so often and kept a regular head-count going to ensure nobody ended up going the wrong way down the Old Kent Road, urgh!

You know you're approaching the farm because you can smell it before you see it. I say this in the nicest possible way: after last night's rain and due to the pruning and weeding that was going on, the air was fresh and country-like, right here, in the heart of our city. We were greeted by Gemma, who had already set out our tools, wheelbarrows and various containers. She quickly directed people to tasks: lopping back the stray branches overhanging the fence to the orchard, crouching down amongst the trees, picking up fallen apples, some of which would be used to make chutney (mmmm) and some would be fed to the pigs (more of that later). Alongside the orchard was a pile of sacks...containing well-rotted manure, sh*it basically. This didn't deter an intrepid few, who got stuck straight in, re-bagging, tying and relocating the sacks, using a combination of wheelbarrows and sheer might.

So little time!

Sadly, as our run was quite a long one, we had a quite short amount of time at the task; we would love to have stayed longer, but had to get back. Some last minute shifting, shovelling and grabbing was done. This anxious trainer did the rounds, counting down, promising an opportunity to meet the piglets and reminding the volunteers that we still had to get back to our start point. Combining a number of final activities, we wheeled greenery to the compost heap and carried crates of less-than-perfect apples to the pig pens. The pigs!

Last time GGSouthwark visited, Esther, the sow, was about to give birth. Since then she has had fourteen piglets! After we had admired the rasta sheep, given a nod to the donkeys and stroked the resident cat, we got busy chucking the apples at the pigs (this is allowed, they love it). Out they wandered, one by beautiful one. Tiny ones, pink ones, spotty ones, bigger ones and proud mum Esther, popping out to see what the commotion was about, giving a tired snort whilst snuffling a few apples to herself. What a wonderful treat to finish off a rewarding task.

It was such a shame to hurry people along, but we definitely did have to get going. I really hope people go along one weekend and spend some time enjoying the farm, there's so much to see (a personal favourite is the snoring goat...and the cafe, obviously).

Ee-ay-ee-ay-oh!

At this point there was the option to catch the train back or make it an 11k run. All but one ran both there and back (one challenged knee taking the overground option). A couple of people peeled off en route, heading homewards, but the rest of us kept up what was a pretty speedy pace, this time choosing a more scenic route along the old canal path, over the busy and polluted main roads. All sorts of chatter could be heard on this leg, sculpture, ultra running, half-marathon aspirations, but our conversation was suddenly interrupted by one of our party legging it after the ice cream van, which pulled over. Seriously, if this was nearer our start point we would all have been up there, stocking up on 99s and bubblegum ice lollies! (Whams, do they still sell Wham Bars? we wondered...).

We continued our run, ice cream fantasies pushed to the back of our minds, dodging in between the pedestrians on the still busy main stretch of Peckam, to our start point and a whole load of stretching. Thank you Southwark for having me, it was a real pleasure running with you!
