Great to be inVOLEd again!

Tue 27 Apr
Report written by Rob Haworth

And so balsam bashing season begins, this time with a fantastic ulterior motive that was to clear the river banks of the Hogsmill of not just the hardly sprouted balsam but of everything in preparation for the release of 600 water vole next year. But first things first - dinner time. This weekend citizen zoo will begin the planting of various plants favoured by water vole as food, so clearing the overgrown banks of nettles and balsam was the first course.

We met Elliot from Kingston Council, just off the cycle super highway who gave us the low down of the mission and some instructing on how to use the slasher tool. Due to a dry April so far the balsam we were looking for had yet to really sprout and any that had was still in it's infancy, but with his keen eyes he spotted a little balsam shrub from the path and was able to show us what to look for.

Splitting into three teams we got to work on two different areas of the riverbank, plus a litter pick around the area. Freya couldn't wait to get stuck into Elliot's welly boots, Jassy slashed and hacked at the nettles with much gusto and Jane took her stress of dog sitting out on the nettles and weeds. Kate went digging for a plastic basket, Di got to work on the other bank with her slasher, Rob nearly went for a swim whilst tackling the balsam right down by the edge of the river and Rachel flew off with Eleanor to find something to sit on.

An hour and a half later having made solid inroads into our sections of the banks we downed tools and left Elliot to cart them all back to fishponds, whilst in the middle of his own conference call.

It was great to see a number of you back today - Jassy, Freay, Eleanor and Di - but a massive well done and congratulations to the one and only Rachel who completed her 100th good deed! Amazing work and thanks so much for all your efforts, especially over the past year.

If you see Him- a - layan BABY then just pull it!!

Tue 27 Apr 18:30 pm
Green Lane Bridge over Hogsmill River (just off Elmbridge Avenue roundabout) , (just off Elmbridge Avenue roundabout) , Surbiton, KT5 9HG
Help clear the area of this pesty plant and nurture nature.

The meet is at Elmbridge Meadows area with the super Elliot of Citizen Zoo in association with Kingston council and the task will be pulling baby himalayan balsam in preparation for a water vole planning day and a deep litter pick across the nature reserve.

This is from my experience the earliest balsam pull of the season but you will be in expert hands to show the way so grab your gloves and get the early start on the big weed.

Elliot's number should you need on route for this one is 07906402431

Meet point specific is for Greenlane Bridge that crosses the Hogsmill - You should see Elliot from the roundabout

Bloomin' Marvellous task working the Rose Garden project

Tue 1 Jun 18:30 pm
Fishponds Park , Off Mayberry Place, , Surbiton, , KT5 8SY
Improve the ambience and biodiversity of wildlife in our community

No pardon here as this is what we asked for...A project to work on throughout the year in Kingston.... and we got it!! So gloves on and have at it!

The rose beds at the top of Fishponds Park is the venue and as discussed with I.D Verde we are adopting them, so taking on various aspects of their maintenance through the horticultural year.

So, first Tuesday of every month, this is the place to be https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51%C2%B023'17.2%22N+0%C2%B017'37.1%22W/@51.3881111,-0.2947332,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d51.3881197!4d-0.2936432?hl=en

Andrew is our friendly task owner for this one and should you need him on route then number that is best is 07890 999 314

Andrew has also been kind enough to share a breakdown of the plan for the area with me so let me know if you wish to know more and I can email you some details!!

....Voices of Hope is a local charity dedicated to community activities, designed to enhance physical and mental wellbeing. Together with the Council, Council contractor Idverde and the Friends of Fishponds Park, we have come up with an exciting plan to reinvigorate a corner of Fishponds Park, Surbiton. This will create a community food growing space, transform a redundant flower bed into a sensory garden and save an existing rose garden. The community allotment will include accessible footpaths for the mobility impaired, as well as a host of green infrastructure features and pollinator-friendly planting to improve biodiversity. Access to grant funding will be required to make all this possible and there is a lot of work to be done before it can be a reality. Once established, the vision includes involving various groups in maintaining and developing the area, with the possibility of using the food for community lunches and even supplying the local food bank. This project will complement the adjacent community orchard that was planted in January 2020 and create an attractive feature with fantastic potential for community use.

aMaze! A blackcurrant maze!

Sun 11 Apr
Report written by Jane Yelloly

A gorgeous bright but very chilly morning for our return to a favourite hidden corner of Tolworth at the Edible Forest. And great to have Di rejoin GoodGym Kingston.

We were welcomed back by Brian and Ben of the Edible Forest with a mini tour to see the fruits of our labour last year - some successful grafting but still waiting for our tree seeds to show!

We got to work helping plough and plant up a blackcurrant maze. The small saplings we planted should take 12-24 mths to start growing into a hedge like maze and produce fruit.

They say patience is a virtue but even by summer they should grow by about a foot so we look forward to seeing them sprout.

Thanks to Brian and Ben and well done everyone - Rob, Kate, Di and Jane

Allow members of Mencap to use the garden in small groups

Michelle at Searchlight/ Mencap has reached out for some Good help with the garden area.

She needs some assistance tidying and cutting grass at the Searchlight centre so the members of Mencap can meet in small groups outside where it is safe and stop many being isolated at home. The task will be weeding, cutting grass and general tidying of the area.

It maybe a bit more overgrown than we have seen in the past so a great before and after photo op maybe?

Don't forget the gloves

Come down and help maintain these and do some transplanting and creating new beds.

Bring veg seeds if you'd like to plant any that it's the right time to plant (refer to the packet.)

Come and enjoy the blossom too that may be putting on a good show by then.
