Let Sleeping Logs Lie

Tue 24 May
Report written by Saul Muldoon

Not exactly logs, but railway sleepers, and we didn't let them lie either. Working with our friends at Growing works we were on week 2 of a big task to remove a raised bed. Ben Godfrey, David Bilton and myself were shifting sleepers and shoveling soil to remove some old raised beds and replace them with an insect friendly wild flower area.

Well done team, another top effort...not sure about logs but I think I need a lie down now!

Removing a Raised Bed

Tue 24 May 18:30 pm
Lockwood Park Health & Fitness Club, Brewery Drive, Huddersfield, HD4 6EN
Making a wild flower meadow for Netherton Infant School

We’ve built raised beds for Growing works before, well now we are going to remove one!

The folks at Netherton Infant School have decided they want their raised beds, built from old railway sleepers, shifting in order to make way for a wild flower meadow. We’ll need plenty of muscle for lifting and shifting, and don’t forget to bring your gloves.

The run is from the Lockwood Park Health & Fitness Club, meeting at 6:30pm outside the main entrance. The run is 3K each way, including some off-road sections and a couple of steep gradients.

Please note the change of start venue for this run

Making the Bed

Sat 21 May
Report written by Saul Muldoon

We made a bed yesterday, that's a flower bed on Cowciffe Recreation Ground. The people of Cowcliffe were keen to convert a patch of overgrown land into something mote attractive ahead of their Platinum Jubilee fare and GoodGym were only too happy to help out.

With picks, spades, forks and mattocks to hand GoodGymmers Kati Law, Ben Godfrey, David Bilton and myself spent a very enjoyable morning making the bed.

Unmaking the bed

Tue 17 May
Report written by Saul Muldoon

South Crosland Junior School had a old raised bed that needed dismantling, so along with our friends from Growing works GoodGym were called in to tackle the job.

An hour of hard labour later we had made a dent in the job, but there is still plenty to do on our return visit next Tuesday.

Thanks and well done to Kati Law, Louse Galvin, Zena Whalley and David Bilton for their top effort this evening.

Weeded Good

Tue 26 Apr
Report written by Kati Law

After a great run along the canal we met up with Faith at Christ Church. She provided us with tools and we set about weeding a path. An hour later the path was weed free so we tidied up and had a shorter run back along Kilner Woods to the Stadium. Thank you to Louise for the photos and report title.

Stumpbusting and Graveyard Gardening at Christ Church

Tue 26 Apr 18:30 pm
Stadium Health & Fitness Club, Stadium Way, Huddersfield, HD1 6PG
Keeping the churchyard tidy

We're back to Christ Church to continue our ongoing mission has been to clear overgrown vegetation and keep the churchyard looking tidy. If you are free and you fancy some heavy duty gardening simply sign up, this is a great task and both Reverend Charlotte and the church's elderly congregation are always very appreciative of our efforts.

To keep GoodGym accessible to those who do not wish to or are unable to take part in the group run, there is now an option to meet at the task.

So if you are running we will convene outside the entrance to the Stadium Health & Fitness Club at 6:30pm. Please note we are not currently able to use the changing facilities, so arrive ready to run. If you are meeting us at the task you'll need to be at Christ Church Moldgreen at 7pm. We'll finish the task for 8pm and run back at the Stadium for 8:30pm.

Obviously if you can run please do so, but if you're unable to we'll see you at Christ Church.

Getting the Gruesome out of Newsome Wood

Sat 23 Apr
Report written by Kati Law

After I managed to lock my car key in my car and then getting a parking ticket while going home to get my spare key (Thank you Katherine Huggett for chauffeuring me around!) six GoodGymmers finally assembled to get the gruesome out of Newsome! Armed with secateurs we cut back brambles and then picked up the litter hiding underneath. Great effort everyone!
