Food parcels 21.4.21

Wed 21 Apr 16:30 pm
Richard Benson Hall, 276 Cowley Rd, Oxford, OX4 1UR
Packing and delivery

We have 2 tasks in East Oxford tonight. This is the early shift at Oxford Mutual Aid, and there will also be a gardening task at Boundary Brook Nature Park. It might be just about feasible to make it to both if you want a full evening of GoodGyming as long as we hurry through the parcel packing!

This is week 2 of a change of system for our Wednesdays at Oxford Mutual Aid, so probably still figuring it out a little. We will be packing food parcels as we have all winter, but instead of then delivering dozens of them we will have a maximum of 10 deliveries to do.

The majority of the time on this task will be based inside Richard Benson Hall preparing the food parcels. We will then deliver a parcel or two each at the end of the session. I have requested that all of our deliveries are within a 15 minute walk of the hall.

Please wear a mask.

Boundary Brook Nature Park work party

Sat 8 May 14:00 pm
Boundary Brook Nature Park, Boundary Brook Road, Oxford, OX4 4AN
Help restore and maintain this unique wild area

Boundary Brook Nature Park was created in 1990 when a group of community wildlife enthusiasts rescued a plot of disused allotments to carve out a wild space in the heart of East Oxford.

Featuring mixed woodland, meadow, a nature pond and butterfly glade, Boundary Brook is home to a rich variety of wildlife from birds and butterflies to frogs and foxes.

Oxford Urban Wildlife Group have asked for our help to with a mixture of tasks as they start reopening the site, including seeding grassland and building paths.

Please bring your own gardening gloves. Tools and litter pickers will be provided. We will divide into work groups of 8 people or less on site to tackle different areas.

The task meeting point is outside the gate to Boundary Brook Nature Park, which is on the cycle way just past Larkrise Primary School at the end of Boundary Brook Road.

Cardboard lasagne and an adequate sufficiency of logs

Wed 31 Mar
Report written by Bethan Greenaway

With lockdown restrictions slightly relaxed we were delighted to be able to head back to the Children's Allotment.

With flapjacks in hand to celebrate Anna and her amazing 100 good deeds we headed to the site and were greeted by Alice who had some jobs for us.

The main aim for the evening was to prepare some planting beds around some existing fruit trees. This involved creating a "cardboard lasagne" - a cardboard layer to prevent weeds popping up topped with some soil and finally some lovely rich compost - ragu, pasta, white-sauce.................... Silver birch logs to edge the beds were also prepared by Aoife who's eyes lit up at the mention of using a saw!

We cheerfully got to work, chatting as we went. Conversations topics were wide ranging and delightfully random - from rescuing bumblebees from spiders to the joy of river swimming.

By the end of our session we all sat back and surveyed the fruits of our labours - ripe and stinky manure piled around the fruit trees, cardboard lasagne built and some lovely silver birch chunks prepared ready to by made into a gorgeous border. We will be planting strawberry plants next week!

We were all so happy to be back in this gorgeous space and hear all Alice's plans for clearing and planting.

Til next week!

Re-jig, re-organise and re-stock

Sat 27 Mar
Report written by Bethan Greenaway

Weekend shifts at Oxford Mutual Aid can sometimes include some unexpected changes. Today was one such day, involving a list mix-up, some re-packing and a ticking clock!

Undeterred by the tasks ahead, four Goodgymers rolled up their sleeves and put their shoulders to the grind-stone (socially distanced off course) and got to work.

Parcels were re-organised - families of 3 became families of 6, provisions for adults were replaced with nappies and milk for babies, unwanted tins were swapped for easily prepared vegetables and a delicious range of bread. Anna packed some food parcels from scratch and we were even able to do a bit of re-stocking and cleaning before the van driver arrived to whisk the boxes off to their new homes.

Thank you to Anna, Zoe and Katie for their amazing hard work and providing biscuits. I have now added chocolate coated malted milks to my shopping list, my biscuit tin will never be the same again.
