Mission

You should Chair-ish your birthday!

3 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Swindon.

For GoodGym Swindon's second mission, we had been asked for a couple of runners to help Ms S by moving a leather arm chair from the bedroom into the living room. The added challenge? The lift over the bed to remove the chair from the bedroom.

GoodGym Swindon were more than up for the task, though, as three runners agreed to help chair-ageously. Andrew and Mike met at the Oasis, and ran the 11.5km to the mission location in East Swindon, while Teresa met us at the mission location.

But this was a special day... it was Andrew's birthday! That day at work he was asked, 'will you go out for a meal to celebrate' or 'out tonight for a few few drinks'?

'NO', he replied, 'I'm going to move a chair for an older person!'

The only present he wanted was that black GG shirt!

We met Miss S's support worker outside the mission location. This was the first time she had listed a mission with us, and was already thinking about other people she worked with that we could support.

We ascended the stairs, introduced ourselves to the very friendly and grateful Miss S, and got to work! We dealt with the bed challenge in no time - Andrew got to the chair first, over the bed; Mike stationed himself on the narrow side; and Teresa the side opposite Andrew. Heave, and over it went!

Next, we were faced with the Friends-ly challenge of the corridor. Care was needed to avoid the pictures on the wall. PIVOT!

Finally, the chair was in the living room. Hurrah! Miss S was very grateful, and talked about how it was her husband's favourite chair, and she was looking forward to her guests being able to sit with her in the living room on the chair.

We had a lovely chat with Miss S and her support worker, and then we were off! Mission Accomplished!

Inspired to GoodGym too?

  • On Saturday 31st of August, we're humping and dumping at the Penhill Haven. Sign up here.
  • Next Tuesday 3rd of September, we are sprucing up the Big Yellow Bus, so it's ready to be used as a homeless shelter by Christmas. Get involved!
  • We’re also looking to grow missions in the town to help older people with one-off tasks, and coach runs to help combat loneliness and social isolation. Interested in more info? Check out the links, or speak to the Task Force.
