Thornhill Square Gardens is a quiet oasis off Caledonian Road, the largest square in Islington. Captain Noel Thornhill donated the gardens to Islington Council in 1947 for public use, and in 1953 the gardens were re-designed and landscaped with formal flowerbeds and a children’s playground as part of the Council’s “Coronation Year” improvements.

Planting includes shrub borders, ornamental displays and rose beds, with paths, lawns and seating, and a mound to the north.

All this needs maintenance, and the local Friends group meet once a month at the weekend for gardening, to keep the area looking smart. GoodGym was on hand to assist as usual, this month, keeping the edges of the grass at bay, while removing small weeds which were taking nutrients from more favoured plants
