After a no-show mission yesterday morning Jenni and I were raring to go. After a little detective work finding the right flat, we met Mr M at the same time as his carer arrived.

He showed us the way outside and while he was being looked after we looked after the garden. The space was small but was fairly overgrown with a tangle of spaghetti weed, which had covered the entire patio space and latched onto every wall and plant.

It had been a wet night and the moisture had brought the critters out. The slimy kind. Anyone who’s been on a mission with me will know I’m not the biggest fan of gastropods at the best of times, but this lot were hanging out in gangs, generally terrorising the neighbourhood. You could almost hear them singing their anthem, “We Are Snailing” (sorry).

There were no tools on hand so we went with hand. Well, Jenni had brought a trowel and hand fork, but in the end it was more effective to tear up the spaghetti weed (is that a thing or have I made it up?) and pile it up on the patio, which was gradually becoming visible. As we made our way around the space we uncovered a variety of interesting items, the result of Mr M’s garden backing onto a walkway through the estate. Pesky litterbugs.

After a little over an hour we had a nice pile of binbags to show for our efforts, and were feeling quite chuffed. We passed the bags over the fence and took our filthy trainers off rather than muddy the nice clean floors, and after bidding farewell to Mr M we were on our way to enjoy a well deserved cuppa and the rest of Soggy Sunday.

Snails. Urgh.
