GoodGym are usually near the front of the line when it comes to good causes, with members looking for any excuse to support communities.

I popped along to join Friends of Tower hamlets Cemetery Park for a drop in session at Shandy Park to pot, plant and help create a new wildflower meadow.

It’s a location I have been frequenting since my secondary school days and I have been a regular at the neighbouring Shahjalal Mosque for Friday Jumuah prayers for over ten years.

Because of the size of the current temporary portacabin structure, it has been difficult to fit in all worshippers, and many pray outside in the park, very nice in the summer, not so much in the winter. I do love it all year round though.

With the community gardeners, both young and old, all out in force and helping with planting bulbs I hope the Mosque visitors who pray outside, join regular park users and get to experience the delights of this new meadow before the new build is completed and accommodates everyone indoors.

This activity is also supported by Nature and Us and all tools and equipment was provided to provide a great experience. It was really nice to see some of the home schooling parents join us for the lunch shift

This is my type of activity, outdoors, quick and impactful. I loved planting a whole load of snow drops. Grasses and bulbs.

It’s always a pleasure to bump into Ken and I’ll be back soon. Well done on the super work you do to engage the community.

The community are in for a real treat with this one.

Looking after the nature reserve and heritage site

The Friends are an independent charity responsible for managing Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, a unique and vital nature reserve and heritage site in East London. Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park offers everyone a breathing space in the heart of East London. This woodland cemetery is a unique place of transformation: a people’s cemetery, a place for remembrance, a sanctuary for humans as well as nature, a place for festivals, field studies and forest schools. Always changing with the seasons, it is rooted in the history of the East End, a place of rich heritage that is full of possibilities and freedom for all.
