Mrs U and I go waaaay back - we first met in the first week of lockdown (remember that?!) when I queued outside Tesco’s for an hour, and then had to lug 10kg of chapatti flour up a hill… Good times…

Well I had a lovely midweek mission to help her out again. This time, one with less queuing inside and only 20g of post plus the weight of a few coins to carry.

It is almost Mrs U’s nephews birthday, and she wanted to send him a card to send him some birthday greetings. Mrs U needed someone with impeccable taste in birthday cards (me), to purchase said card, bring it over for her to write, and then send it off par avion, via the post office.

After work I scoured M&S for birthday card options. There wasn’t a huge selection, and I made do by picking out one boat-day card and one beer-day card. I wasn’t sure if Mrs U’s nephew would appreciate flowers, a card to ‘my darling husband’ or one wishing him a speedy recovery. The next stop was to get to Mrs U’s!

I was greeted by Mrs U and invited in, where she opted for the beer themed card, and particularly enjoyed the ‘sip sip hooray’ line (she’s a GoodGymmer clearly, enjoying the puns)! Bless Mrs U next, as she had written out a lovely message for her nephew, and asked me to check it through for her, as she was worried her English wasn’t great. It was perfect. She then asked me to help copy out her message into the card, as she had some visual issues. I did as asked, knowing full well I had neat enough handwriting for such a job. Mrs U gave me the address, and once she was satisfied, we stuck the envelope down.

To send a letter to Germany would cost £1.70 (thanks Google). Mrs U handed over the coins for the post and postage into my hand, and thanked me again for my services. Next stop was the post office, where a stamp costing £1.70 was purchased and adhered to the top right hand corner of the envelope.

All to do was pop it into the big red post box! Signed. Sealed. Delivered. And ready for a visit to Berlin!
