Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Debs Sharpe
Having helped with raking snow* for our task in Holgate Community Garden, I stretched my legs before heading home. The bridge over the railway was looking very icy, and is a popular walking route connecting with the station and further into town. (Any allegations that I went this way because it was over the railway and I like trains would be entirely founded...) I spotted that some kind souls had gritted the approach steps (it turned out to be our very own GG heroes David and Leanne!) and they were melting nicely. Inspired by this, and the fact there was a hand shovel end left in the grit box, I set out to grit the whole bridge and far steps. Many passers by were appreciative, and one advertised the position of snow wardens who can help their community in times like this. The lovely lady already knew about GoodGym, so it was good to see that word does get around. (Fortunately noone was around to witness my overly-ambitious grit-fling, that I envisaged would beautifully sprinkle itself down the stairs. Instead it slumped wetly onto only 3 stairs and required further spreading by hand. Gentle sprinkling step by step definitely the way forward.) With the far steps already melting, I could scrape the snow off with my boots, leaving a clear way up and down for folks. I even spotted that someone had added cute little ears to my snowman, but alas I'm missing an after photo. Bridge gritted and steps clear, I went on my way home.
*classic GG use of non-standard tool for the job. Impressively effective!
