It's becoming a bit of a habit with FoodCycle at the moment, so although I was signed up for the cooking session (it would be my first time as Project Leader) I still found in my in box a request from the Regional Lead to do the food surplus collection run. Fortunately I had flexible work commitments, so they were very soon flexed, and I was out on the road to visit Sainsbury's. I feel like the staff who help me are becoming firm friends and they are always keen to get an update on what we cooked the previous week and how many people we fed. It's nice for them to feel involved in the project too. It was another of those times when Habeeb said there wasn't much food for us so I went and loaded the trolley into the car. However, when I came back to pick up the last few bits and pieces I discovered yet another cage laden with fruit, bakery, and lots of dairy including a large number of packs of cheese. We don't get much cheese very often so I was quite excited. I was also surprised by the gorgeous bunches of flowers which Habeeb offered to me. I said I would take them and share them with guests and volunteers. They were in great condition but had to be shifted as they were making way for the huge delivery of flowers ready for Mother's Day which were towering all around me like some floral triffid forest. Once again the car was loaded to the roof, and the flowers were tucked in beside me on the front seat, and clunk-clicked by the seatbelt to ensure they didn't fall over (and to stop the car's seat belt warning sound from driving me to distraction. There was no room for any other food, so I was quickly on the phone to my other half to ask him to complete the collection by visiting Aldi for their contribution. And then headed for the BAptist CHurch where Jordi and Ruth were on hadn a spart of the cooking team, to start unloading the treasure.
